I get more done when my husband isn’t there. If he is there, he will look in the big black bag and pull something out and say why are you getting rid of this?? (And no, it’s not his things.)

He has some things that are “worth money.” I told him that they are 40 years old and no one would want them. And that he has dragged them around in our 5 moves over 30+ years of marriage and hasn’t done anything with them yet. He said that is true. Does that mean he will get rid of them? Nope. “Are they in your way?” Not in the basement, but on the chair in the living room, yes!

They are still there.

I just try to do it from time to time. It’s like holding back the tide, though, haha.

My wife is like that only will toss the stuff on the coffee table on the living room or sometimes on a door knob.

I read a piece of advice on one of the old Amazon threads. “Take digital photos of the items and enjoy the memories. Touch each item once more before throwing it out. You need the space more than you do those drawings, etc from your child’s childhood.”

Yes, I am getting to that point where it is much easier to part with things that are mine. I ask myself if the things means anything to anyone else, or just me. If it’s just me, sometimes I find it easier to get rid of. I look at it, or read it, or remember it, and then it’s gone. But taking a picture is a good idea. Why take up space with a thing you don’t need? Remember it in a photo and free up space.

Has anyone ditched all the negatives from their old photos yet? :film_strip: I am thinking about it. No way my kids are ever going to get prints that way anymore. I can’t even remember the last time I did that. (Does any place even do prints from negatives anymore? :camera_flash: ) I bet there is probably a whole box of negatives taking up space, as well as tons of double or triple prints of photos…

I will not pitch negatives, since they are the only way I could replace photos for deceased relatives or friends. There are places that still process them. Now if they are for a goofy picture they go bye bye .

I thought about that, but they can make copies of photos pretty well, I would most likely do that anyway.

One thing that is difficult to dispose of is half used cans of paint. I have quite a few. Some I may use to touch up or paint the room again, but some are old. Our town does not make it easy to dispose of paint. I need to open the cans and let them dry up. However, who wants open cans of paint sitting around waiting for some clumsy person to knock it over? 😱

Oh, wow! I always have thought that having a house fire must be a devastating thing.

Apparently, when I was about 3 yr old, my parents found me standing in a 5 gallon can of wood stain, happily painting the walls. They said they didn’t quite know where or how to pick me up. I barely remember doing it. I do remember that was one of those occasions where both first and middle names were used.

Yes it is.

Things like appliances can be replaced, but things like photos and other such items can not.

🤣 When that happened I knew I was in for it but good. It was even worse if my brothers were involved. The time we all got caught smoking cigarettes behind the barn comes to mind.

Didn’t you know that’s where people always get caught, lol?

I took a couple of rolls of negatives to be developed with me when I visited the States a few years back…at that time I couldn’t find anywhere close by over here.It was exciting to have them developed as they were about five years old and of the children 😊
I like @lilypadrees idea of taking photos of kids drawings …I have plastic bags full of kindergarten and primary school aged childrens drawings …:upside_down_face:I will ask each child to go through them first.

🤣🤣🤣 That’s like me putting talcum powder on the floor imitating Mama cleaning the floor.

In my young mind, I was helping her. I had it all over me, all over the walls, all over the place. One of my little friends was with me. Mama very firmly said to her, “You can go home now” and scooted her out the door.

Digital photo of the photo
USB drive
CD photo disc

All can be used as alternates to storing negatives (which will disintegrate in time) and can hold a LOT more photos. Less time to load the photos too. No development time needed.
