So did your priest wear rose for Laetare Sunday?

Ours did. (Although his chasuble is the strangest shade of rose.) Our deacon wore a very pink stole.

Our priest said he wore violet for the previous Mass and the “Liturgical police” descended on him after Mass and said he should have been wearing rose! So he did for the next Mass.

You need an “other” choice for your poll. 😃

We had a visiting priest and he couldn’t find the rose vestments. So he wore red and told us to imagine it was just dark rose. I guess that’s not as bad as the liturgists who try to convince us that blue is just a different shade of purple in Advent. 😉

Yes, he did! 👍 In fact, he wore them when he celebrated Mass in Angola! 😃 The Admniistrator of the Cathedral wore them, too. He chided me because I wore pink. He told me that the color applied only to him. 😃 My pastor, unfortunately, did not. He wore purple, even though he has rose, which looks more like magenta. 😦

I was watching the news, and saw a clip of the Pope in Africa celebrating mass.

Was wondering what was with the pink vestments (remember, I’m a noOb, be nice!).:o

No. Our priest wore purple. I don’t think he knew it was Laetare Sunday. I didn’t. I won’t comment on the homily. The only thing I can do is pray.

Today is Laetare Sunday, which means the Sunday of Joy. This is similar to the Third Sunday of Adent, Gaudete Sunday, which means the same thing. This means that we are closer to the great celebration of Easter. And, it’s rose. 😃 Although, looking at the Holy Father, I believe that real men wear pink! 👍

Sorry, I can’t help it… Gotta ask. Is rose “better” than violet on Gaudete or Laetare Sundays or any other time? The Church certainly doesn’t suggest it is…

:flowers: thank you 🙂

(God bless me, I’ve got a lot to learn…)

However, rose is the color of joy. And, these two Sundays, Gaudete and Laetare, are the Sundays of joy. Violet/purple are penitential by their nature. Rose, while having a tinge of purple in it, is more appropriate on these Sundays.

Yes, he did. It was a beautiful almost dusky rose shade. It had a white band running down the front and the back which was decorated with a gold vine and grapes pattern. The material was a medium weight damask brocade, and it was lined with white silk. The style was half way between gothic and Roman. It looked much like the Borromean chasuble that Pope Benedict has worn on a couple of occassions in Rome. Father told us that the chasuble was hand made and had been a gift to him on the 25th anniversary of his ordination.
The chasuble that our previous pastor wore on Laetare Sunday was more of a pinkish colour and was gothic in style with no ornamentation except for the Chi Rho on the front and back.

Just goes to show how much I need to learn! I had no idea why the priest was wearing rose colored vestments today, and I asked my mom if our parish priest (I was sick this morning, so I attended a later Mass) did the same, and she didn’t know (her memory is poor). Thank you for answering my question!! 👍

1. Well, I’m highly confident that the Priest over at the indult TLM/EF where we’re regulars cerainly did.

However, we were out of town. We attended a NO/OF Mass in a rural parish in central New York state. It was in many ways the best NO/OF Mass I can remember.

However, no sign of Laetare rose. The readings were for RCIA, though no candidates in sight at Vigil Mass. So, maybe the RCIA scrutiny thing can take precedence, so to speak? Or, RCIA scrutiny and Laetare together would be too much?

2. BTW, since poll included, “What’s Laetare Sunday?” an aside that I think is very interesting:

Every Mass includes both ordinary and proper parts. That is, every Mass includes prayers that are used at every Mass (like, Sursum corda, Lift up your hearts), and prayers that are the “property” of that day (like, Introit or Entrance Antiphons).

Names like Laetare Sunday and Gaudete Sunday come from the propers for those days. Specifically, the Fourth Sunday of Lent is called Laetare Sunday because the first words of the Introit for that day are, Laetare Jerusalem. Similarly, the first words of the Introit for the Third Sunday of Advent are, Gaudete in Domino semper.

In fact, apparently, it used to be possible to refer to any Mass for any day by it’s “name,” meaning by the first word or two from its Introit. Similarly, each prayer had a “name,” the first few words: Confiteor, Te igitur, Pater noster, etc.

No, he didn’t since there are no rose vestments in our parish. Laetare Sunday wasn’t even mentioned.

The previous two pastors categorically stated that they wouldn’t wear them even if they had them. The first just said it to me but the second used his pre-Mass greeting to announced that “you all know what people would think if I wore pink.”

Our priest said in the homily that he would have, but our parish doesn’t own any.

Our parish doesn’t have rose vestments. Evidently, one of the pastors between our current pastor (who would probably wear a rose chasuble if he had one) and the pastor who was at the church when I was growing up (who wore the rose chasuble in the late 70s) tossed the rose vestments.

I am tempted to buy and donate a rose chasuble for the parish. I’ve seen them on ebay for a reasonable price.

Has anyone donated vestments to their parish? Any advice?

What I would like to do is buy them and have them delivered to the church as being from an anonymous donor.

The Celebrant is not obligated to wear Rose vestments.

However, for the first time in my life, I attended a Mass this weekend where he did. It was … different.

Yep, he did. Also, his rose chasuble today was etter than most of his chasubles because normally he has these stupid chasubles which go right past his hands so he has to hitch them up whenever he want free hands to use.
🤷

Yes, he did, but the last time rose was required the priest kept saying, that’s not rose, it’s purple and ended up wearing red. Then again, those were two different priests. We’re very lucky to have two sets, one for the shorter priests and one for the taller fellows. A pity none of the rose, not pink, ones are in very good condition. They could wear white too, couldn’t they?

We attended mass at a chapel in a Catholic hospital yesterday and the priest wore rose as well. He even explained why he did during the homily.
