Sepharad,

I just had a thought for you. My DH is active duty and one of our very helpful sites is military onesource. They maybe able to help you with information, if they can’t let me know and I will make the call for you. Here is the link-- call the 24 hour phone number. They are fantastic with getting information and doing the research. militaryonesource.com/skins/MOS/home.aspx

God Bless!

Glad you’re back; I missed you.

I’m also overjoyed that you were called in such a way… such a blessing!

Prayers sent up for you and your cousin. Thank him from me and my husband for his service.

Oh, I am well aware of what he is entitled to…my husband is a Navy vet of about 10 years (he was a SEAL), and since he comes from a big military family, he filled me in on everything along those lines!

I already have it planned with the funeral director…my cousin will have the honor guard, the 3 volley salute, the works! And I’m going to take up your suggestion to ask some vets from the DAV, maybe the JWV and other groups too, to come to the funeral. Because otherwise the only ppl there will be my husband, the kids, me and a few former neighbors (maybe a social worker too.)
The head of your local veterans administration will probably put the word out. If I may ask - where are you located?
Oh, and thank your husband for his service! My son is in the navy too. He’s stationed in Japan. His enlistment is up in about four months. Funny, my dad was in on the occupation of Japan too, and now his grandson is stationed there!

What a wonderful story!

It is amazing how God makes things like this work out.
As was mentioned a few times…it is sad people take for granted what so many people had to go through for us to enjoy the freedom we have here in America.
Someone else’s mental anguish allowed us to live freely.
These are the examples of why God views suffering as meritorious!
Lord,
Take, bless, and keep them in Your Infinite Love.
May he find rest with You in Your Kingdom!
Amen!

God bless you for caring for him,

God bless him for all he did,

May God hold him close to his heart in his last days and in eternity,

May God turn the heart of that woman.

BTW thanks for that link! I always get that confused, and the term “removed” is not used much so…

I hope I didn’t mess things up then! When they had me sign him into hospice, I had to list my relation to him, and I wrote “second cousin”.🤷
I think the only thing that matters is the loving care. I would bet that they are just happy to have someone who cares no matter what the degree of kinship. I was seven when my sister and my first cousin married brothers. I use to think that brothers of brother-in-laws were cousins. It took me a long time to figure it out. I was totally confused as were their children. They knew we were cousins but that confused them because my sister was their aunt. 🤷

Wow!! What an amazing story…Thank God that they were able to find you, in order to provide this man with the care he needs, and that he will receive the honors that his service for this country have earned for him.
How amazing, all the things that have come together to make your cousin’s last days peaceful ones, with the care he needs at the end of his life. God truly does work in mysterious ways!!
God bless you for taking the effort to see to his needs. :gopray2: :gopray2: for him, and for you, as well as for all who are helping him.

Hi S, I hope that you will ask your cousin if he ever became Catholic. And if he wants a priest to give him last rights. Or find out if he wants both a minister and a priest to be with him or at the funeral. Don’t be surprised if he lasts longer than a week, he may have lots of toxins in his body and with good medical care he could survive for quite some time or more than a week. It will give you a wonderful oportunity to get more history here for you. He could fill you in on more of your families Jewish history. God definately has made this possible for you. Pax always.
God be with you.

What a wonderful story (sad though it is). My godfather was in the Pacific in the army during WWII. He was unable to work because of PTSD. For Sepharad and for anyone else who had relatives in WWII, there is a way to memorialize their service.

My sister and I bought our father a brick (he was in the Navy in the Pacific) and my cousin bought his father (my father’s brother) one too. Uncle Joe stormed the beach at Normandy and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. (Uncle Joe would never talk about his experiences nor would my wife’s uncle who was in both battles and was captured by the Germans).

If you ever get a chance, the WWII museum in New Orleans is simply splendid. Truly, they were the greatest generation.

I will remember your cousin in my thoughts and prayers. God bless all of our vets.

Today, I received a PM from “Sepharad”, asking me to relay a message to everyone here on this thread… I have the sad duty to report to you that Mr. Marvin Ravinsky, Sepharad’s cousin passed away today at 2:28 PM quietly in his sleep. As you read this, take a moment to say a prayer for the repose of his soul, and for Sepharad and her family for their loss.

May God grant Mr. Ravinsky eternal peace with Him, and comfort those who have lost him.

This is a truly insparational story. I do sincerly hope everthing goes smoothly.

I feel some measure of joy by this news. I pray with sincere hope that Mr. Ravinsky is welcomed gladly in the presence of God and it is always a wonder to me to see the Holy Spirit working through someone, in this case Sepharad for us to witness as well. Thank you, it was very uplifting in how you accepted the task with integrity~well done.

My sorrow is for the hard hearted relatives and I will pray for them as well

Thanks to Rob, for posting that announcement for me. Yesterday when we got the news, I was just too distraught to post (even though we expected to get that news any day now.)

I have another related problem, and this time its a Catholic one. I hope someone can help me, because I’m not sure where to look. First I have to give some background.

My cousin had been living in a very poor section of town; his own line of the family evidently wrote him off years ago due to his war-related emotional issues (PTSD)…but when his parents (my great uncle and great aunt) were still alive, they had taken in two teenage girls who had been thrown out by their father (their mother had died, and the father’s new girlfriend didn’t want kids around (!), so he threw them out to fend for themselves (where is CPS when you really need them?)

Anyway, Marvin and his parents took them in and gave them a home until they were able to fend for themselves when they were 18 or so. They never forgot that, and for the last 20 years, had been taking care of my cousin, until things got so bad he had to go the hospital. That was when the hospital looked me up in the phone book and called, because as good as these two sisters have been to him, they are not technically “next of kin”. (They said they were so glad the hospital social worker found me, because the hospital was refusing to tell them anything of his condition because they were not related!)

These two sisters were raised Catholic by their mom, who died…and my cousin and his folks did their best to raise them that way, with what little they knew, as Jews.

But both sisters are now going through a very, very hard time because of Marvin’s death…one of them called me in the middle of the night, sounding very drunk (she had a drinking problem related to her poor childhood when her father threw them out)…I am really worried that this might be the thing to push them over the edge. Neither seemed very stable when I met them; all they can say is, “We lost the only father we ever really had”.

I’m trying to encourage them to go back to the Catholic religion in a more active way; I really think this will help them right now!

Does anyone know what the parish church would be in Millville, NJ (where one of them lives)? (The other sister lives in my city, so I know how to find that parish).

Also, are there any Catholic associations to help people with severe loss and alcohol problems?

One of these sisters, when I met her, had many cut marks on her arms…she says she cuts herself when she is extra sad, and it seems to take the pain away. I don’t really understand much about all this, can anyone tell me what to recommend for them?

I don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea; these sisters are really very sweet people, but they have serious issues going back to their abandonment by their father, and they need help, esp. now that my cousin (their adopted “father”) is no longer with us.

I feel a responsibility to help them, and so does my husband, after all they did so much for my cousin. He would have had NOBODY if not for them! And I’m sure he would want us to help them.

PLEASE pray for them…their names are Colleen and Lisa (I don’t want to give last names for privacy reasons.)

I REALLY DO THINK that they need spiritual help more than anything right now…everything points in that direction.

Sepharad, may God bless you, you have such a good heart.

I am very sorry for your loss, and I will pray for you and your family, Colleen and Lisa, and for the repose of the soul of Marvin - may he rest in peace.

I don’t live in the US, so I couldn’t say what services would be available for these two bereaved ladies, but the Society of St Vincent de Paul springs to mind - they don’t just deal with material poverty, they befriend people, and can offer counselling, maybe just a friendly ear.

God bless,

Pat

Thanks for that info…actually there is a St Vincent de Paul thrift shop not far from my cousin’s old apt, and his landlord asked me if we should donate his old furniture to them. So maybe while we’re there, I’ll inquire about help for the sisters too.
