How might one:

Define “a soul”?

Prove its existence?

Can it be done biblically?

Define “a soul”?
Within scholastic philosophy the soul is simply defined as the substantial form of the human body. That is the soul is what makes it a human body rather than some other form.
Prove its existence?
One can prove the existence of an immaterial soul by demonstrating the many activities that the mind engages in that are impossible through purely material means. i.e. intentional states, qualia, understanding of universals, rationality etc.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7

If you’ve ever been through a windshield, or been knocked off a motorcycle at 40MPH, you know you have a SOUL.

You know when you see a brand new baby, that GOD is still handing them out.

You know when you are in the presence of strong evil, for you have a tendency, regardless of temptation, to guard your SOUL.

I could beat your SOUL out of you to prove the point, but that defeats the immediate purpose of the exercise.

😃

Yes. Scripture reads at times the spirit (human) or Spirit (God). Remember in Genesis and John, God breathes into Adam and then the 12 Apostles.

The English word soul is translated from Latin, anima, whence we get words like animation (movement, as in moving pictures), or inanimate (nonmoving, as in dead).

The soul is what causes movement in our human bodies, ie, the life. Other moving beings possess a soul likewise, and so we call them animals.

When someone becomes a dead body, we say the soul has gone.

I don’t know what is meant by “prove the soul biblically.” Scripture definitely teaches the fact of the human soul. I doubt a nonbeliever would accept its words as proof, though.

Well, I was going to mention Qualia, but ilikepizza1 beat me to the punch.

Prove their existence:

Technology. If you thought atheistic abiogenesis was unlikely, you haven’t seen the numbers for how improbable modern technology would be if our bodies were controlled entirely by physical processes.

Please explain. Where in a human body is there evidence for non-physical control?

You can get a strong sense of your soul when you go to confession and it has been cleaned…something similar to the car when it has been serviced…and besides there wouldn’t be SOUL music bro/sis

In the simple fact that we can think, that we can reason, that we have built technology, that we emote, that we remember, etc.

One cannot prove the existence of the soul apart from one’s religious worldview. Do souls exist? I hope and have faith they do; otherwise, we’re all in trouble.

The proof of it’s existence is the human’s ability to ask for the proof of the soul’s existence.:)😛

Luke 16:19-31
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22 Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And [a]besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham *said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Actually one CAN:)

Indeed one MUST if we do in fact “emulate” our God as he claims we do.

Gen. 1:26-27 "And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth. And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them

So we ASK, just HOW is this accomplished?

There are BILLIONS of created stars and planets in the Universe, BUT only one: only Planent Eath can be proven to support the life forms we know of.

On Planet earth tere ARE hundreds of thousands of living things, BUT only one, only man can rationalize; amke make something new and complex our of existing things, and ONLY man can freely choose to love or to hate. [Things like a computer for example].

In order to do these things God has given to man ALONE and exclusively, a mind, intellect and a freewill wich are permnately attached to the human soul. We can know this because God canot lie.

Isaiah 43: 7 & 21
“And every one that calleth upon my name, I have created him for my glory, I have formed him, and made him & This people have I formed for myself, they shall shew forth my praise”

This “Glory” is the very reason an exist. Because man alone is capable of giving it back to God. BUT it is not just while we exist on earth; it has the potential being “SPIRITAUL Things like our God”, to live and exist for eternity.

Doubt it? Then quantify for us your freewill. What is its size, share, color and weight. You can;t reasonably or logically deny that you have one.👍

the human soul is what is Judged by God upon our death; and it is what will spend ETERNITY either with God or satan [and yes I do know the Jewish beliefs on this issue]. In heaven or in hell. Amen.

Shalom my friend,

Jesus said there is a soul.

That’s good enough for me!

Mark 8:36
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
