South China Sea: ‘If China attacks our navy, we’ll call the US’, Philippines says

In a first under the Duterte administration, Manila says it is prepared to invoke its Mutual Defence Treaty with the US in the face of Chinese aggression
Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jnr also vows to continue air patrols over the South China Sea that Beijing has denounced as ‘illegal provocations’

Alan Robles 26 Aug, 2020

Manila will invoke its defence agreement with the United States if China attacks its naval vessels in the South China Sea, Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jnr said on Wednesday.

His comments mark the first time the Rodrigo Duterte administration has openly declared it would turn to Washington for help, amid ongoing flare-ups between Manila and Beijing in the disputed waters.

Locsin, who appeared on the ANC news channel’s morning talk show, said Manila would continue air patrols over the South China Sea despite Beijing’s calls to halt what it described as “illegal provocations”.

I just wonder if we will respond considering the Philippines told the United States that it must withdraw from the Subic Bay naval base by the end of 1992 , ending a vast American military presence that began with the capture of the islands from Spain in 1898.

The Mutual Defense Treaty between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States of America (MDT) was signed on August 30, 1951, in Washington, D.C. between representatives of the Philippines and the United States. The overall accord contains eight articles and dictates that both nations would support each other if either the Philippines or the United States are attacked by an external party.

It all sounds good on paper, but do we really want to go up against China?

Rather, does China really want to go up against the U.S.A. and Allies/NATO? China has very few true friends. Vietnam, India, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, all have a bone to pick with China. Taiwan already has one of the most formidable Air Forces in Asia. An air and naval war would be devastating to China that would set its developmental progress back a century.

We will not commit while under Trump. He has already verbally assaulted every nation under NATO for not paying their fair share. Trump also wants to pull out of NATO and pull Financial support from NATO.

As of 2014, the PLAAF(China Air Force) has a strength of around 398,000 personnel and is the largest air force in Asia

Taiwan’s total military force numbers 300,000.

China counts more than 2.3 million active service members, and another 1.1 million in reserves and military police, or the largest ground force in the world.

I highly doubt it.

Nobody wants to go up against China, however, we must honor our treaty. I don’t want to fight anybody, but if you attack my family or friend, you will be fighting me. Even if someone wasn’t my friend, but was unjustly attacked, we have a moral obligation to help repel the attack to the best of our ability.

Now having said that, China is not stupid. They would lose in the end…either militarily or financially. They don’t want war.

It’s not that the Chinese Communist Party would take over Washington. But in its own region, China has the advantage.

Doesn’t matter who is president. the treaties still stand. America is still a part of NATO. everything you said is irrelevant.

That’s 2014. The strength of an Air Force is not in its personnel but number of Air Craft.

In Modern War boots on the ground aren’t as decisive to the outcome as they were in the past. Besides, China’s ground forces are horribly inexperienced. Numerical superiority in ground forces would not play much of a role in an Air and Naval war for the south china sea.

The problem is that China has encouraged a blind nationalism in recent years. Even if the gov doesnt want war the people could end up clamoring for it.

China has 4 times the number of Taiwan.

The US has 4 times that of China. But our resources are spread out thin.

If China did Invade Taiwan, we could not nor NATO could not respond quick enough to prevent a Capture.

Philiphines could be taken overnight. They don’t stand a chance. Ants against Giants.

I keep hearing about China flexing their muscles, and there is a lot of tension with Taiwan. Now the Philippines.

Blessed Virgin Mary, Pray for peace around the world.

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.

We thought the same thing about Vietnam over 50 years ago. China has no desire to attempt a takeover of the Philippines, only to watch their army suffer loses over a protracted period of time.

I’ll quote others:
That was then. This is now.
We are talking about a Technological different world now. China vs Philippines cannot even compare to North Vietnam vs South Vietnam. Worlds apart, Technologically speaking and Population speaking.
Oh we could respond. But it’ll be WWIII and possibly nuclear weapons…
And who has the audacity to use Nukes and has?

Well, there can only be one “top dog”, and we have 2 vying for that position right now. Usually that means a fight to see who is “number one”, 2 different ideologies, 2 different cultures, we should all be worried for the future.

If the Chinese attacks the Philippines, then Vietnam and Taiwan know they’re next. China is not well regarded among the Southeast Asian nations. China has also been antagonizing these countries with their so called wolf diplomacy.

The US may not get involved but Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, India and Australia might.

China will be fighting a war in multiple fronts. It’s already fighting one with India.

Not conquered but bought from Spain.

Even then, the US constantly waged war against Filipino guerrillas, much like its involvement in Vietnam.

Anyway, talking about China, here is an article on China’s plans for war. It plans to go against India, Japan, Taiwan, Russia and Mongolia and take exclusive control of the Spratley Islands, also claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.
