South China Sea: ‘If China attacks our navy, we’ll call the US’, Philippines says

China has long been the largest social control experiment in human history. How does an autocratic government keep 1.5bn people in check and maintain its power?

First, they need to feed the people. So they’re going to go looking for food. Hence overseas buying soybeans, overseas fishing in other countries’ EEZ’s (anyone notice their fishing fleets were caught off the Galapagos Islands as well as Vietnam?), controlling farmlands as far away as South America and Africa, and a lot more.

Second, they need to employ the people so the people can buy food and housing. Part of that is they need resources to keep their economy going. Especially those resources that can’t be supplied domestically. Like oil and gas.

In that light, then it is easy to understand China’s motives for controlling the South China Sea. In the process of which they ignored the 2016 decision in favor of the Philippines’ claims and have interfered in the EEZ of all the countries that border that Sea. China also has a similar territorial dispute with Japan and Taiwan over the custody of what Japan calls the Senkaku Islands, China calls Diaoyu Islands and Taiwan calls the Tiaoyutai Islands.

At the same time, they’re pushing against India. At the moment, they’re making deals with Russia for shipping gas and oil to China; who knows tomorrow they might decide they should just take the territory. They have allegedly been overfishing North Korean waters as well.

Long story short, they are pushing in a lot of places. Dunno where this ends so I will make no forecasts. But China will be the center of global conflict over the next several decades. Whether that stays in the economic and political spheres or spills over into the military sphere remains to be seen.

There is another sphere which will impact both economic and military spheres. It’s the cyber sphere which can be another battleground.

Do not underestimate the Filipino people.
My father-in-law was a child during WW2 during the Japanese occupation. He remembered getting woken up in the middle of the night, fleeing his house with his parents and hiding on the jungle floor while Japanese soldiers would spray bullets at them. The Japanese, however, would not follow them into the jungle as the Filipino people had nasty surprises waiting for them.

I’m with you…don’t underestimate the Filipino people.

This is a case of “It takes one to know one”. My great uncle was a WWII pilot, who got shot down over Japan. Found some US troops to hang out with. They also did not follow enemy into the Jungle, unless you had been in that part of the jungle very recently and had a recon on it. He told us kids some really gruesome stuff.

But with respect to the Jungle?

that was 70 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

The Chinese will sell off its Treasury holdings first. This will temporarily cripple the US economy.

Phillipines should concentrate on the piracy going on rather then hypotheticals about China attacking. Piracy is an issue affecting so many sectors of that region.

What is with all this 'China attacking" rhetoric.

Why is China attacking India and attacking Filipino and Vietnamese fishing boats?

Why is it building naval bases within the Philippine exclusive economic zone? China just built a base within 100 nautical miles off f the island of Luzon, one of the major islands of the Philippines.

Why is it harassing Malaysian vessels exploring for oil?

Doesnt mean all out war and attacking anyones navy. I think each case of fishing boats and tankers needs to be looked at.
There is a well known corridor for the drugs trade out of South America through this territory and down into western countries. Its easier and less dangerous then taking cocaine up through South America and into North America.
There is also a huge piracy problem, you really take your life into your own hands on those seas and with tourism on some of those islands and coast lines.

Australia went through a ‘China is going to attack’ fear last century. WE had yellow peril under the beds cartoons and genuine propaganda around this theme. It seems like this theme is resurgent again with no real foundation. North Korea is the real and present aggressor IMHO

Would you be okay with China building a naval base 100 miles off of Sydney?

No?

So why should the Filipinos tolerate what China is doing? Why should they tolerate fishermen being attacked? Why should India tolerate repeated excursions of the PLA into India?

North Korea is China’s cat’s paw. It’s using North Korea to test the will and resolve of the West.

This isn’t about the Yellow Peril but CCP peril. Nothing to do with race but a bloodthirsty sociopathic government that cares little about its people and even less about its neighbors.

They are not going to do it though, are they.

I would ask what is on the boats, who is on the boats, whats going on first. What illegal activities are going on.
Except they’re basically propped up by China.

So…
I have a theory about all this rhetoric about China potentially invading and that it will all go away by the years end.

I am not talking about boats. I am talking about a full fledged naval base.

They did build a naval base within the economic exclusive zone, about 100 nautical miles off of a major Philippine island, another sovereign nation.

Should that be okay?

If that is not an act of aggression, I don’t know what is.

Why should the Philippines tolerate an unwanted military presence within its own waters?

I must commend your knowledge on the subject. I learn more from reading your posts and it is obviously, you are versed in this information.

I know China even set up a base to close to comfort for Australia:

ISLAND GRABBING: China almost has Australia surrounded

There are a lot of books now even talking about all of these things.

OH please, we are not surrounded by China, enough of this media alarmism.
Everyone is survelling everyone else at the moment. Everyone is playing war games, it means nothing, its all talk. Scheduled war games have been going on for years by all parties.

That’s no excuse. Might does not mean right.

A sovereign country has a right to have its sovereignty respected.

At least in a civilized world.
