If I were the Cardinal I’d have told the Muslims an ecumenical space would be created in the cathedral when Jews and Christians and other religions had one in the Dome of the Rock just to see what they’d say to that!

I wonder what they would say if Catholics or Orthodox petitioned them for the right to pray in the Hagia Sophia.
Petition who? The government of Turkey, which is stridently secular, controls the Hagia Sophia and treats it as a museum. Religious services are not allowed there.

Quoting the Islamic Board:
What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world
They recognize that they are asking for something without precedent. Its worth discussing, especially within the context of reciprocity. But I don’t think there should be any quick decisions. Its important to consider all the implications.

To do so would be an insult to the memory of those Spaniards who fought for several hundred years to reclaim Spain from the Moors. Just as soon have some neo-pagans claim that they worship the Phoenician gods and want to worship in the Cathedral of Cadiz because it sits over a Phoenician temple. What’s next? Claiming the Cathedral of Sevilla because the La Giralda tower was part of a mosque?

One of my personal heroes - Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar would say otherwise.

This site has a long, interesting history.
It is believed to be the location of one of the oldest churches in Spain, dating from about the Third Century AD. When the Moors overran the country they desecrated it and built a mosque.
When the Spanish regained control of their land, the cathdral was erected there.
Thus, the Muslims are now asking to use what they stole and lost.
The local chancery is “right on” in refusing use of the cathedral by non-Catholics.

I wouldn’t let them turn the cathedral into an “ecumenical space” what about the tabernacle, the pews, and the crosses? It might in some way be blasphemous wouldn’t it? If they want to pray there so bad they can go to suday mass.

Catholig

There is nothing to stop anyone of any faith from praying in the Cathedral. They just aren’t allowed to perform public Muslim prayer. I’m sure they are free to sit in the pews like anyone else, and pray silently.

This is a barefaced political action. Besides, the Muslims only had a Mosque there because they conquored Spain by the sword.

The Muslim religion is one of aggression and coercion. I find their attempts to take advantage of Western magnaminity tiresome.

What makes me so angry is that they had the nerve to ask this. Why don’t we ask them if we can turn one of the many churches they (forcibly) turned into mosques after conquering a country (by force) into an “ecumenical space?” I wonder, would they take it into consideration and debate it with us? Would they discuss the implications of such a move? Or would they perhaps declare jihad against us for even THINKING of converting a house of Allah into an “ecumenical space?”

But you know what, I blame the West for this. The leftists in Spain and throughout Europe that call themselves “Catholics” give non-Catholics no reason to respect the Church, unfortunately.😦

The proper headline: “Spanish Bishop Refuses to Allow Desecration of Catholic Cathedral Under Pretense of Ecumenism.”

If only we had more such holy bishops…

I get even more angry at the “press” who pretend to be journalist; but, fail time and again to print the entire truth. The story stops after asserting that the Spaniards “forced” the Moors out of Spain" They fail to print that Spain was not conquering this land. They were freeing it from the Islamic invaders! What really disgusts me is the caption under the photo. It should read “The Catherdral, **rebuilt **after being desecrated and destroyed by Muslim invaders in Medieval Times”

Yes, I agree…unfortunately I found the story at the BBC website and not at a good Catholic one. Oh well, despite the BBC’s obvious anti-Catholic bias, we get a good picture of what’s going on.

I had written a different headline but I guess a moderator changed it…

Oh well, I trust the moderators so they must have had a good reason.

I’ve been fortunate to visit the Cordoba cathedral and it’s unique in that one can see the tombs of local nobles dating to dark ages, followed by Moorish arabesques and then Gothic columns. It’s like a time-line of the land: Christian, usurped, Christian again.

Westerners forget that Al-Qaida claimed Muslims around the world to not allow what happened in Spain to happen in Palestine, such is the significance of Cordoba’s cathedral. Cordoba was Muslim at the apogee of Muslim Caliphate that spread through most of the known world.

This shameless appeal to desecrate the Cordoba cathedral again under a facade of tolerance is preposterous. Kudos to the bishop!

:blessyou:

Yes they did. It is called the rules. The title of the thread must match the article’s title.

Ecumenism occurs between other Christians. The word in not appropriate for Muslims

Good for this bishop. I wish we had more like him here in the US.

I think what some people fail to realize is that Muslims believe that if they conquer a land, it is theirs until the end of time. Even if we take it back, they will always still claim it as their own as if they had not taken what didn’t belong to them to begin with…just look at Palestine.

I am glad that this was not allowed. Like another poster said, they can quietly go into the cathedral and sit in a pew and pray if they wish… but to allow them to organize islamic prayer in the Cathedral would be blasphemous.
