A native of Palencia, Spain, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás was elected this morning in Rome by 217 Jesuits taking part in the order’s 35th General Congregation. He succeeds Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as head of the 20,000-strong worldwide Jesuit order.

The result has been confirmed by Pope Benedict XVI. Earlier, Benedict had approved a list of candidates that included Nicolás.

I’ve read a lot about him recently. In all appearances, he seems to be from the same line as many Jesuits, unfortunately. He seems to put inculturation in front of orthodoxy, etc. Nevertheless, I hope and pray that the Holy Spirit affects some change in the Jesuits and that their new leader is the instument.

At any rate… I guess we could hope for another supression if things don’t work out!

Most of the Spanish ones I know are conservative in moral theology but a bit hippish in thing like inculturation, celibacy.
 
Al Kresta is going to have a segment on Weds on his show about this guy. I get the impression his election is not a good thing.

The Pope also appointed Archbishop Niederauer to San Francisco. I don’t claim to know his mind in these matters, but AB Niederauer, himself, was and is a huge problem.
 
I read someplace that his career closely parallels that of his once removed predecessor [Arrube?]. As I recall he was pressured to resign by the Pope. That does not bode well.

Pedro Arrupe - still beloved leader of the Jesuits (1960’s - 1980’s). He is largely responsible for taking the Jesuits in the direction they are now headed. It is kind to say that he was pressured… it was more like the Pope removed him from his position while the man was on his deathbed. He was so close to death that the JPII could have just waited him out, but I think he wanted to make a statement. The modern Jesuit is still angered by those events. One the occaison of JPII’s death, America (Jesuit publication) actually ran an article wherein the backhanded compliments of JPII were softened by the author writing that “although the sad memory of his (Arrupe) treatment is still fresh in the minds of many Jesuits, we still remember fondly the late pontif (paraphrase).”

Basically, JPII ousted Arrupe becasue he and his leadership were directly challenging the authority of the Pope and the Church itself. Leftist Jesuits harbored ill will toward JPII for this until his death and probably still do. Arrupe was a desaster! He and his ilk have destroyed the Society of Jesus.

If this new guy is an Arrupe-ite, things do not bode well for the Jesuits. He comes from the same area (Japan) as Arrupe and, no doubt, was greatly influenced by the late dynamic and legened leader.

No worries. I was thinking that I may have been a bit harshin my assessment of the late Jesuit Superior until I was invited to visit my old Jesuit-run high school this morning. They actually offer the “Arrupe Award” for community service/social justice. Oh well… I hope they can right that ship…
