Spanish street to be named after Benedict XVI

The Spanish town of Pilar de la Horadada will name a street after Pope Benedict XVI in gratitude to residents who opened their homes to young people during World Youth Day.

The idea to name the street “Pope Benedict XVI” came from a local pastor, Father Francisco Rafael Morato Boronat, reported the EFE news agency.

“The parish sees the naming of this street as a permanent sign of homage and gratitude to the families and entities in the town that helped to make the participation of Pilar de la Horadada during World Youth Day not only exemplary, but also a time of joy and generosity for all the people,” Fr. Morato said.

The mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Jose Fidel Ros, recalled that “over a hundred families from Pilar wanted to collaborate with World youth Day by hosting French and Polish pilgrims for three days, providing them not only with a place to stay but also with their meals each day.

“For this reason, we see this as a way to thank them for volunteering,” he said.

Pilar de la Horadada is well over 250 miles from Madrid! Surely the WYD visitors didn’t stay Pilar de la Horada during the course of WYD. That would make one heck of a commute.

Apparently the town has a large ex-pat community, though. So I wonder if maybe WYD participants might have visited the town before or after WYD? Maybe as a bit of sight-seeing?

Regardless, its good to see that the town is willing to memorialize its participation by naming a street in honor of Pope Benedict. I wonder which other three popes were selected for this honor?

Before the main event of WYD most dioceses done something called “days in the diocese” in which we stay with local families (or in a hostel if needs be) in another city other then Madrid to experience spanish culture, and the Catholic culture in that city. That is probably what happened at Pilar de la Horadada, my group stayed in Valladolid, with two parishes and some of us stayed in the English College (these were Seminarians who will be going to Valladolid for their year of formation before they go onto either Rome of Oscott)
