Spanish youths attack Catholic school, threaten to burn priests alive

A group of young people shouting, “Where are the priests? We’re going to burn them at the stake,” attacked the Mary Help of Christians Salesian School in Merida, Spain, leaving one teacher wounded.

According to the Salesian Press Office in Spain, the incident occurred  at 1:20 p.m. local time on Oct. 18, when “some 100 young people entered  the premises of the Mary Help of Christians Salesian School in Merida.”   Nearly 1,000 K-12 students attend the school.
 
“Custodial workers and some teachers at the school tried to stop the  group, but 10 of them were able to gain entrance to the school building,  shouting insults against the institution, pushing staff members who  were in their way and attempting to disrupt the normal school day,” the  Salesians said.
 
Principal Marco Antonio Romero told the newspaper El Mundo that the  young people’s intention was to pull down the crucifixes. “More public  education and less crucifixes,” they shouted.
Sounds like visions of the turn of the 20th century…

You’re right, unfortunately. I’ve witnessed it myself. It’s particularly sad, as Spain had always had such a strong Catholic identity.
 
According to friend who was just over there, 50% of the under 30’s are unemployed.

High unemployment of disaffected youth leads to (pick one or all)… mob violence, communism, fascism, anti-clericalism, ethnic violence, football hooliganism, riots etc., etc.
 
Not for nothing, but what exactly is occurring there in Spain that this even comes to their mind? It’s not like you’re a good, well-adjusted kid, and you just wake up one day and you and 99 of your friends decide to invade a Catholic school. I really wonder what is going on that even gave them this idea…

True, still seems random. If unemployment was soaring and everyone had time on their hands, I could see rioting/robbing big stores. That would be wrong but it would be predictable.

But why target a Catholic school? :confused:

Let’s not forget everyone, Spain had a Civil War, in the 3 years the two sides warred with each other, one side the Communists, Atheists, Unionists and Leftists, 300,000 people were killed. That’s unbelievable. So these sentiments have been there a long time.

Someone more knowledgeable about Spain than myself will surely have better insight. However, it is possible that these anti-Catholic incidents are a legacy of Spain’s past. The fallout from the Spanish Civil War and from the Franco era, at least according to some Spanish journalists, have never been fully resolved.

The previous government of Socialist José Luís Zapatero took the country suddenly to the left, e.g. legalizing gay marriage and abortion. The conservative government now in power is trying to roll back those changes, but they were elected primarily because of economic concerns and not because of opposition to the Socialist social reforms. Politically, the country seems evenly divided. Religiously, 3/4 of Spaniards identify as Catholic, but only 14% attend Mass on weekly basis.

Also, I’ve heard Mussolini was an atheist… so Mussolini seemed to side with Franco.

Oh, and though it may not be pertinent here, let’s not forget Spain is made up in parts of different ethnicities such as the Basques, Catalonians, etc.

A common Basque symbol is in fact, a Monstrance containing a communion host, they put such an image on a soccer/football jersey/shirt.
 
It’s only a matter of time until you have security armed to the teeth like SWAT or Spetsnaz standing outside classrooms for security. You saw all those movies and books from the 60’s and earlier that showed a police state, yet that’s what the world is inevitably turning into. If those protesters come again I hope they are met by tear gas and batons. If they are mad at the lack of public education, attacking the ones educating them is ridiculous.
 
Those who describe themselves as anti-fascist are almost always radical leftists. And quite often many of those they label as fascists, are not fascists at all.

Yes, that was news to me, as well. Apparently Franco’s navy preyed upon Republican freighters in the North Sea. One incident involved the sinking of the SS Cantabria, which at the time was under contract to take passengers from England to Russia.

My parents during WW2 were anti-fascist.

The Spanish Civil War didn’t have anything to do with atheism. Its primary purpose was the restoration of the monarchy (a far right wing position) culminating in the installment of Franco as Regent to the King with the support of the Church.

I didn’t say atheism had anything to do with Franco, I said it is reported Mussolini was an atheist himself.
