Speaking in tongues is one of the charisms meant for the building up of God’s kingdom. Does your parish or a nearby parish have a weekly prayer group?
There are Charismatic Masses. but less often. The city where I live has an annual healing Mass where the gift of tongues will be expressed. Other locations have more frequent Charismatic Masses. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a FIRE rally, please go. FIRE stands for Faith, Intercessory Prayer, Repentance, and Evangelization. They always include a Charismatic Mass. The last time I attended, The Mass was concelebrated by two bishops.
On May 19, 1975, Pope Paul VI gave special permission to Cardinal Josef Suenens to celebrate a Charismatic Mass at the high altar in St. Peter’s Basillica.

Also you can check with your diocese to make sure you are going to a Catholic group.

Yes there are Catholics who engage in this practice. Overall there are not many in comparison to the Church at large, although they do have certain areas where they are a stronger presence than others. No it is not approved for use in the Mass at large although those that practice this thing do try to insert it at times into the Mass. There are a few Masses specifically for charismatics, although fewer than they had in previous years.

Some Bishops approve of it while others, thankfully, do not. Healing Masses often have this type of thing and they are just about as effective as are similar manifestations in pentecostal communities. Many Catholics who speak in tongues claim to be able to do so at will and use them primarily as a prayer method between themselves and the Holy Spirit.

The Church recognizes it and approves of it in a limited sense but also cautions that it is open to abuse. One of the earliest heresies, Montanism, made extensive use of tongues and displayed quite clearly just how open to abuse the “gift” is. Practicioners claim that they are able to “discern” true tongues from false tongues.

They first appeared in the Book of Acts, but were by all accounts totally and completely different than what is practiced today. After the days of the Apostles they disappeared until around 1900 or so when they started up again in the pentecostal communities, where they pretty much remained until the 50’s when they started to spread to other protestant denominations. It was not practiced in the Catholic Church until the mid 60’s, what a surprise.:yawn: after some Catholics attended an ecumenical retreat and requested baptism of the Holy Spirit from a protestant, I believe, presbyterian minister…

There were several saints throughout history who reportedly spoke in tongues on occasion. Some claim that Padre Pio did as well, but there is no direct evidence of that.

There is no proof that he ever did speak in tongues despite what the movement may say. I think even they have backed away from it due to lack of proof. If there wasproof, don’t you think it would have been presented by now?. It hasn’t been presented so more than likely he did not. Merely saying he did doesn’t make it true. But if you have access to proof of this, please share it with us. I’ve heard this since the 80’s and never seen any proof at all about it.

The late Holy Father did some good things for the Church, but he also did some very bad things. I don’t think anyone who objectively views his Papacy would conclude otherwise. He was a good man, a holy man and a man who tried to do, I think, way too much and tried to be everything to everybody.

As far as supporting the Charismatic movement he was also supportive of the neo cats, and we all know how far over the edge they went and was instrumental in the 1986 World Day of Prayer at Assisi fiasco. He made a **lot **of mistakes and he was a long way from perfect.

A good man, a holy man, a man who tried his best, but a man who in his desire, heck maybe even mania to unite all the worlds religions under one banner, no matter what they believed, was tragically wrong and caused much scandal and damage to the Church.

As I said, I’ve heard these claims for years, always from someone who allegedly was there. Unidentified of course, except that it is always a Priest :extrahappy: deeply involved in the Charismatic movement, and equally unidentified as to where and when it occurred. Believe me if it had really happened, it would have been trumpeted around the world as to when and where it happened. The leaders of the Movement would not have lost this golden opportunity.

But they did, No one has ever brought forth any proof whatsoever. The most telling point is that John Paull II himself never claimed to have been so blessed. So it remains

Not at all. I’m just tired of hearing rumors and lies presented as truth, thats all. As I said, even the Charismatic movement itself has backed away from these claims to a great degree . And no, it really isn’t more common than I think. Believe it or not, I travel quite extensively and hear Mass in many places. The movement isn’t what it was in the eighties and nineties except in a very few places.

Thanks for lumping me in with assorted liars. I really appreciate this.

There would be no reason to ‘trumpet’ praying in tongues anymore than there is a reason to ‘trumpet’ praying the rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet or any other private devotion.

Can someone ‘prove’ every little thing that happened during his years as Pope? Every audience, every meeting with priests and seminarians??

Is every time he prayed the rosary documented? Every time he prayed to St Jude or ask St Anthony to help him find something he misplaced??

It is not asking for proof that is the bashing – it is your assumption when proof you deem good enough is not present that is the bashing.
