Speeding nun fined rushing to injured Pope [CN]

A 56 year old nun was fined for doing 180 kilometres per hour on an Italian freeway. She told police she was anxious to be by Pope Benedict’s side after his fall.

The Guardian reported the three Salesian nuns had jumped into the Ford Fiesta from Turin on Friday and were rushing to the area near Aosta where the pontiff is spending his summer holiday. He suffered a fall in the bath on Thursday night.

The two passenger religious sisters were aged 65 and 78.

I’m confused. Does she know him? Are the Salesian sisters responsible for his welfare in some way? Was there a legitimate reason for her to drive over 100 mph to be “by his side” after an accident?

If not, I hope it was a hefty fine. Nuns should know better.

My thoughts exactly. The Pope always has people around him to care for him and these nuns were not part of his household or they would have already been there. The accident was not in anyway life threatening. In fact, I understood that he had celebrated Mass prior to going to the hospital (nned to check if that is true). I think they deserved whatever fine they received.
 
I still want to know if that article is legit or not, because that link did not work for me. I just about wet my habit laughing when I ended up on a page about a Catholic winning a cooking contest. I’m still laughing, not a the speeding nuns but the entire thing:

Note: I suppose it is possible that the news service pulled the story after it originally was published in its rss feed and republished it later (after an edit?). Such things have happened in the past, but it is rare. The article ID’s were off by “1”.
 
Well, speeding is speeding and she could have created a very serious accident, that also would have put her two passengers in danger. We have a saying here in the US if you can’t do the time or pay the fine, don’t do the crime. So my advice to sister…pay the fine and thank God you didn’t cause someone to be seriously injured!
 
Waaaay back in the 50’s my mother drove the school nuns around, in pairs, to doctor’s appointments. She was a speed demon, even with the nuns in the car. But she had a phosphorescent magnetic madonna on her dashboard so they were safe and what 50’s policeman would have given a ticket to somebody driving nuns around?? Sorry, off topic, but it just reminded me.

She should go to jail. Period.

And she has the gaul to appeal 🤷

That’s in Europe… there are other standards for cars and traffic… In Germany I legally drove down the highway with my car at 140 mph (well there is only an advisory limit of 80 mph, but when the road is clear for miles on end, who cares?)…
In most other European states there is a limit of 130 km/h though (which is only 80 mph)
Traffic fines are pretty heavy in Italy though…

I know that in Germany they wouldn’t get away with this though… I don’t know how this is in Italy, but as they were not having the Pope in the vehicle trying to rush him to a hospital they might not get away with speeding…
 
I think that the good sister is a little over zealous. I hope that her superior will set her straight since the congregation has to pay the fine. Salesian sisters do not have personal money or personal property.

There is no jailtime for speeding in Europe…
She got a 375 EUR fine and 1 month suspension…
In Germany she would have gotten even less:
100 EUR ($142), 3 points, 1 month suspension
 
I’m glad no one was hurt, but I can’t help but smile at this. So I’m curious as well; does she know the Pope?
