There’s no such thing as a so called “good” Bond movie.I think many people are confused about what “spies” do. Take, for instance, the National Clandestine Service branch of the Central Intelligence Agency. Do they have “spies” running around with nifty gadgets, driving exotic cars, sleeping with exotic women? Yes and No. A CIA officer (yes, officer; not agent or spy. An agent is the person the officer is getting information from!) attempts to coerce and manipulate persons of interest into divulging information that would be of some value to the National Intelligence community, or implement some secretive technology to obtain some information for the Intelligence community. They don’t get to do the stuff that Bond movies are famous for. I would argue that driving a Aston Martin Vanquish, like the one in Casino Royale, would be more conspicuous than driving some indigenous mode of transport. The CIA also makes it clear that its officers cannot use sex as a method to obtain information. So that rules out the passionate sex with exotic women. So, really, Ian Fleming created a world of esiponage and intrigue that really doesn’t exist. Okay, MI5 and MI6 exist, as does the CIA, the Massad, the now extinct KGB, etc., but that doesn’t mean it is the same as a good Bond movie.
