To quote Jimmy Buffett:

“Yes I am a Pirate, 200 years too late. The cannons don’t thunder, there’s nothin’ to plunder, I’m an over 40 victim of fate, arriving too late.”

Apparently not

…My occupational hazard is that my occupation’s is just not around. Feel like I’ve drowned, gonna get drunk uptown…"

Again, apparently not…

But there has been a dramatic drop in the number of Sons of Sons of Sailors, and people who rode out on the sea for adventure, and also people who are not a lawyer, a thief or a banker.

Come on, you knew this was coming…If not me, then someone else.

Having done some offshore sailing (I used to have a 30-foot Hunter) I can testify the ocean is a lonely place, and one who goes down to the sea in ships better bloody well be prepared to deal with any emergency he is likely to face.

This is from a post I made in May 2006.

That’s the URL for the weekly piracy report. Scroll down to the bottom of that site for several other links.

And this is the URL for the annual piracy report:

icc-ccs.org/main/news.php?newsid=63

And this is the “Daily International Vessel Casualties and Pirates Daily Report”: [scroll down]

cargolaw.com/presentations_casualties.html

Piracy really IS a big deal. They board ships, rob the passengers and crew and if the cargo is worthwhile, the passengers and crew will be killed and thrown overboard and the ship taken to where the name can be changed (painted over) and the cargo removed. Very nasty business.

Not just Somalia… Malacca Straits is big – they took a hit from the tsunami… but they are still in business.
