I have seen one of the deacons several times, and he’s great. Again, just can’t bring myself to puking (sorry, that’s what it feels like-emotional puking) it all out again. As I heal I will see him more often, I promise!

One need not attend mass when ill. PTSD is certainly an illness, so please do not feel pressured to attend. The obligation is is lifted during illnesss.

Maybe start with Mass on television, that you can turn off when you get upset, and turn back on when you are ready. It is important to have a sense of control. Even at Mass in person, remind yourself that you can leave at any time, even if it is just to excuse yourself to the restroom for a break.

Of course, if you have one, speak to your doctor or therapist about anxiety/PTSD treatment and management techniques.

I understand you,did you try to speak with the priest or psychologist?
Seems like catholic places remind you of your past…Do you to pray to overcome?
Maybe stay away for some time or go to worship God in other more different place…God will not judge you

Nope, still have the Trinity in my heart. In spite of my actions, or lack thereof!, my faith is extremely strong. I evangelize when I can, making sure that I communicate the caveat that I’m not practicing what I preach at the moment, but know at least the basics of apologetics. I’ll be back, I know that in my heart. I finally reached out in a much more tangible way after it was pointed out that my feelings that are being triggered are a form of, if not PTSD. Thank you!

What is past is past and we cannot change it. Neither can we forget it, but it is no place to dwell. As difficult as it may be, we have to let it go, replacing it with something much better and brighter. That is a life long struggle, but worth every bit of effort. We can choose to accept our lives as they are right now and move forward. “Past” and “prison” have more in common than just the letter P. Maybe think “Present and perseverance” or “future and freedom” if that works.

To have survived all of this, I know that you are stronger than you may suspect.

I’ve been away for over 2 years now. I miss mass so much it hurts, but less than being at mass. Weird, I know. You’re probably keeping track of this thread so you’ve read my other responses and understand where I am a little better. Thank you so much for all of this!

I would second trying a weekday mass. They are quieter, sparse, and much shorter in length from my experience. Try different churches, they all have different ways of feeling to me. Find one where you feel comfortable.

Oh, it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out. Just type your address into some search engines designed for this type of thing like masstimes.org or ecclesia dei.
If you’re just not interested in the idea, then just a different church service can vary based upon the pastor and even time.

Really sorry you are going through all this @Torie. I’ve lived through some hurtful experiences. It takes time to get over it. Just please remember to dedicate your day to Jesus and Mary when you wake up. Even at the most difficult times that helped me a lot and changes my day for the better.

They will take a LONG time to go away. I still often go places or see something that takes me right back. But my life is so good now, that I’m able to control those feelings and just move on.
My daughters can talk about it no without drama tears or regret. It’s a part of our hsitpry, but we’in a better place and we thank God for that.
if you ever need to talk or vent, just PM me.
God bless.

Mass is painful. I went to mass for years with my abusive ex, was ignored when asking for help from multiple men of strong faith. Going to mass now triggers overall anxiety, emotional disturbance, strong desire to just cry during all parts of mass. PTSD-esque symptoms. I desperately want to be able to return to mass. Via faithful, strong, faithful Catholics, advice is to start small - go to the adoration chapel and just be there with Jesus. Go to the sanctuary and pray, just be until I can at least “tough out” mass, leading to fulfillment at mass. Any other thoughts?
Use the mass or adoration, as you come into God’s presence, try to commit yourself to forgive your ex for all the things he had done to you. Maybe you has forgiven him or not, but it is good to do that and to leave it behind you.
