It has been reccommended to me that if I cannot receive communion due to being in a state of mortal sin, I may make a spiritual communion.

The material I’ve read about spiritual communion indicates that it confers the same grace as sacramental communion. Since it would be sinful to receive sacramental communion when in a state of mortal sin, I conclude that the same is true for spiritual communion.

Am I wrong?

Receiving Communion is a public act. Spiritual Communion takes place when the public act is not possible. I would argue that the graces are ‘the same’ in that the desire for Communion is, in itself, a grace, and the graces you need are the graces conferred. But the grace YOU need is the grace either to correct your situation or to endure it . . .

Godspeed: and DO make acts of spiritual Communion.

You receive Sacramental Graces when you receive a Sacrament. A Spiritual Communion supplies some Graces but not Sacramental Grace. Of course if you are not in a state of Grace or are in Mortal sin you do not receive any graces, you are separated from God’s Grace. You might receive Actual Grace however, prompting you to Reconcile with God.

I concur with Br. Rich. Everything I’ve ever learned and understood about Spiritual Communion, because I had questions similar to yours, is that it’s primarily used for when you are in a state of grace but cannot get to Mass. Then you can make a Spiritual Communion. But if you are not in a state of grace you cannot gain graces from a Spiritual Communion just as you cannot from actually receiving.

Also, many people are confused as to what constitutes “Perfect Contrition” which could put you in a state of grace. According to a wise priest I once had as a spiritual director perfect contrition is very rare and difficult to obtain. So make sure you don’t get caught in that confusion. I pray you will go to Confession as soon as possible and then make Spiritual Communions every day that you cannot attend Mass due to work, etc.

God’s grace be with you!

Simon

Thanks for the answers, all. I like the idea of daily spiritual communion.
