Spiritual Reading List Advice

Hey guys! Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I think it is.

So over the course of the past few years, I’ve bought many books, but seldom have read any of them :confused: it is a bad habit only magnified by ADHD. I have made a pact to stop this needless money spending and to finish what I have bought. I guess I am looking to get a very basic reading order down. Right now, I have The Divine Comedy, The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis, The One-Minute Aqunias by Kevin Vost (basically a short summary of the Summa and Aqunias’ teachings), Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, Where is that in the Bible by Patrick Madrid, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the Confessions of Saint Augustine for spiritual books that are unread. I’m working through Answering Atheism by Trent Horn.

Of course, I’m only going to know the right answer ultimately, but (name removed by moderator)ut would be helpful. Maybe I can read them in and order that would allow them to somehow build off of eachother? Maybe by topic? Should I read the Catechism all the way through or just use it as a reference guide while I read the other books?

On top of that, I am working through Les Miserables and The Lord of the Rings. And of course, I do from time to time start reading a book of the Bible (most recently I. tried John) without completing it (I have done Job and the Proverbs though). I tend to start reading, put the book down, and pick it up a year later. Curse my low attention span with books.

Oh and I also have Jesus Shock by Peter Kreeft and The Real Story by Edward Sri unread.
 
Have you ever thought about reading ‘Divine Mercy in My Soul’ which is the diary and autobiography of St. Faustina or Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis? Both can take you to new spiritual depths and are not meant to be read quickly. Rather, they need to be read a few pages at a time and then take time to reflect on what was read.

Why don’t you read the one that interests you the most? If you’re interested, then you should be able to finish it.

If you find you are equally interested in all of them, see if you can narrow down a particular area of your faith that you wish to grow in, and if one of those books particularly meets that need, read that one.
 
If you are interested in reading about praying- how to pray, the stages of prayer, what happens during these stages…I recommend St Teresa of Avila’s books

I personally loved “The Jesuit Guide to Almost Anything” by Fr. James Martin! 😃

👍 Excellent one.

Look for a copy of “Pro Via Sua” by Bl John Henry Cardinal Newman, and anything by him such as his collection of poetry. Anything by Thomas Merton is also worth every second of your reading time.
