Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God… Jesus…Hence sola scriptura… the scriptures alone declare God’s truth.
Three questions:
  1. How do you believe the New Testament defines: ‘‘every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God’’
  2. Logically, how does ‘‘by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God’’ mean ‘‘and by no other way’’?
  3. First please read the following scripture quotes:
Luke 22:19 …saying: This is my body…

Matthew 26:26 26 …said: Take ye and eat. This is my body…

Mark 14:22 …said: Take ye and eat. This is my body

Now, please explain what the verb ‘‘is’’ means in each.

Or do you, like Bill Clinton, say it depends on your definition of ‘‘is’’.

How is a solo scriptura Christian to feel confident in his or her own definition of ‘‘is’’?

What if they are wrong?

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God… Jesus

Hence sola scriptura… the scriptures alone declare God’s truth.
The first book of the New Testament was written for at least ten years after the death of Christ. The last book of the New Testament wasn’t written for at least 45-60 years after the death of Christ. How did sola scriptura apply before the Scriptures were penned?

It depends what you mean by OT tradiitons. If you call teachings etc that we have direct access through the scriptures so be it.
So these teachings were okay for the many years that they were being passed down orally by Jewish authorities, before they were written down?

Are you saying that there are other writings of the apostles outside of the Scriptures? If so, specifically what are they?
Most of them are in the form of sacraments, liturgies, prayers and other practices. I doubt if there are any that have not been written about in some place. For example, one can read the structure of the Mass according St. James. In any case, ja4, these things are part of the Divine Mysteries. You will not be able to access them, whether they are in writing, or not.

It would be better to work on those you have already receieved, such as the Holy Scriptures. I think a study of the creeds would be good for you, though, especially the Apostles creed. They represent the beliefs of the Apostles, some of which you have rejected.

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of God… Jesus

scriptures were given not by private interpretation, but by holy men of God as they were moved on by the Holy Spirit…

Hence sola scriptura… the scriptures alone declare God’s truth.

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine… Acts 2

Where was the apostles’ doctrine written down? Scriptures
How long did it take God to speak through His Holy Men all His words? Has God completed telling us everything He has to say to humanity forever? How do you know? Did the new Christians that died before The Catholic Church was able to assemble the cannon of the Bible 400 years after Christ miss God’s word and miss out on eternal salvation? Do you think that all the Apostles who died before the Apostle John completed His writings did not go to heaven because they did not get to hear what God waited to tell John?

I think if you answer these questions honestly and reasonably it will be clear that your understanding of “by scripture alone” is utterly a false teaching and a “fabrication of men” that only came into existence 1500 years after Christ died through confused and heretical men like Luther and the other reformers.

As a final comment. Do you imagine that Christ lied when He spoke ‘I am the bread of life that comes down from heaven and anyone who does not eat my body has no life in them’? If you are not Catholic then you are not partaking of the bread of life; literally the very living word of God. How can you have eternal life in you if you are disobedient to His Word that God tells us through Jesus that we MUST eat?

Where was the Apostles teachings written down? Some of it was written down and assembled in the Catholic Bible that came 400 years after Christ died. Please note that NONE of the Apostles ever saw assembled in one place in what The Catholic Church called The New Testament. But there are additional things that were not written down. Bet you didn’t know that did you even though scripture tells us that Jesus has much more to tell us? The Apostles teachings are written down in the teaching traditions and in the heart and traditions of The Church. So why are you not coming to Catholic Church and hearing the only Authority on the planet that still teaches according to the Apostolic Tradition and succession?

Better look into Catholicism and the true and full Word of God that only the Catholic Church teaches while there is still time.

James

i’m in awe of your powers to read minds over the net. 👍
All we can read is your posts, ja4, and you have been quite clear and consistent that you believe the leaders of the Catholic Church are teaching error, and that if Catholics will just read their bibles then they can become bible christians.
Not sure why you are saying this. i never claimed that the church has no authority to teach.
You do, every time you state that the Teachings are in error. Since you believe that nothing should be taught that is not in scripture, and that Catholic doctrines are not in scripture, this is a way of saying that the Church is out of order as a teaching authority.
i have an idea but its more important to understand what catholics by it. It seems you do offer a definition which needs to be discussed.
What is this need that you have, ja4? What keeps you from allowing Catholics to hold to their traditions, and shaking off the dust of your feet?
This is the problem. What are these apostolic traditions that were passed on orally (not in scripture)?
There is no “rule” (besides your own) that Traditions not be found in scripture. In fact, most of them are found in both places. Take the table of contents of the Bible, for example. This is one element of Sacred Tradition that is found nowhere in the Bible. The Apostles creed, on the other hand, is almost completely reflected in the Bible.
Have YOU studied the doctrines of the Catholic Church. I said studied, not parrot what you heard once or just made up from whole cloth. You are like a broken record and records are ancient technology broken or not. If I were you I would not worry too much about purgatory because I’m thinking you may not go there anyway. The whole idea of truth is to discern what truth is, not pick the path of least resistance or to hold fast to what grandma told you. Be a searcher for truth and read it for yourself. If you have not read the Catechism and the supporting references, you are never going to learn anything about Catholic “doctrine”.
With all due respect, ja4 has made it clear he is not here to learn about Catholism. His goal here is to pursuade Catholics to abandon the Sacred Traditions, which he believes are “speculations of man” and become bible christians. He does read the catechism, and it has not been pursuasive.
JA4, since nobody is explaining to you where you can read the stuff you are looking for:

Start here with the Catechism: vatican.va/archive/catechism/ccc_toc.htm

Every time the Church makes a statement in the whole thing, they cite it with the appropriate scripture or tradition from where that comes. You seem interested in things that are backed up by tradition only, without scripture.
Don’t be misled by the questions of ja4, Khariz. You are new here (welcome by the way) so you may not be aware that his questions are disingenuous. He does not really want to know about Sacred Tradition. He has already made up his mind that it is all the "speculations of men’. If you read his posts from 18 months ago, you can see that this information has been given to him repeatedly.
. You can find HOW tradition interrelates to the Bible.
ja4 thinks that tradition should have nothing to do with scripture. He believes scripture interprets itself.
I warn you though, as the road is not easy. You can’t spend 15 minutes looking at a topic, say “oh this is hogwash” and move on. What many people have a hard time doing is setting aside their feelings long enough to undertstand that Catholic tradition isn’t some arbitrary garbage that some pope 1000 years ago made up.
On the contrary, that is exactly what he believes it is!
I know you don’t feel like many of the explanantions you have been given in this thread were helpful, but I hope that the resources I have mentioned will help your research into certain doctrines.
Check back with me in 6 months, and we will see how “helpful” you feel. 😉
Before i can answer this i need to know specifically what are the "
Apostolic Tradition for 2000 years"? When i have asked for the details about this i continually hammered for asking it.
What you get hammered for is the disingenousness of your request. As soon as information is provided, you will say “but it is not in the bible, and all we have is in the bible.” 😦
What i’m exhorting you and others of your church is to look deeply what your church teaches and promotes as the truth. There are many doctrines and practices that are unbilical and not what Christ taught.
CAF is not a venue for you to promote you anti-Catholic evangelistic agenda, ja4. If you wish to “exhort” you will have to go elsewhere.

Even though i agree with some of your response you have failed again to address the issue that is there is no teachings of Jesus outside the NT canon. All that we know He taught can only be foudn there.
They are not available to you, ja4, because they are matters of faith. You are still on the elemental teachings of Christ (kindergarten), and are not ready for such subtle Teachings. These are Divine Mysteries, and pearls of great price. There may come a time in your spiritual walk where you are able to appreciate them, but it is clearly not now.
I am saying that the deposit of faith, given to the apostles and thus to all Christians, is not limited to the Scriptures. If you want to know what that entire deposit of faith is, look to all the dogmas and doctrines of the Catholic Church.
But that is just the problem, VociMike. His contention is that, if he cannot find it in the bible, it is a “speculation of men”. So, he asks for Teaching not in the NT, he is given examples, then he says “but that is not from the Apostles because it is not in the NT”. It is a chase the tail kind of game. 🤷

When I see this sort of fundamentalist dogma-chasing-it’s-tail sort of irrationality from the same few individuals that seem to have no other purpose in life but to haunt CAF I have to wonder; what’s going to happen if one ever catches its own tail? 😉 Ironically such will be the first to mock and criticize Catholics for using many repetitious prayers when we petition God. But the very same are completely oblivious to the fact that their own endless and repetitious circular dogmatic orbiting is even more repetitious and itself a form of self-centered worship around a mass of self thought.

I have to wonder if this circular argumentative mechanism has become a new emergent form of Protestant worship? Have the ol’ Quaker and the Shaker Protestant traditions been superseded by the new kids on the block - the “Spinners”? 😃

What are these apostolic traditions that were passed on orally (not in scripture)?
Then when given examples to answer the question, he says “But that’s not in scripture!!”

If ja really wanted answers, he would accept the literally hundreds of answers he has received.

He repeatedly brings up the accusation of the Catholic Church being made up by false prophets (at least implicitly) by trying to tie his claims of contradiction to scripture with 2 Peter 2:1.

“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.”

(Standard Catholic answer here: “Amen, I believe that verse 100%!”)

I found several questions by reading this verse along with the rest of the chapter. For one, this verse itself brings up the question, “Does the denial of Church authority & apostolic succession count as ‘denying the sovereign Lord’”?

Luke 10:16 seems to say so:
[Jesus said to the 12 apostles], “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

I came up with more questions as I continued to read…

2 Peter 2:3
“In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up.”

…Like the self-refuting story of Sola Scriptura, made up by Luther? Or the “Once saved always saved” story made up by Calvin? Both of which respectively exploit the human desires for individual authority & the assurance of security?

2 Peter 2:10
"This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority.’

… Like people who despise the authority of the apostles & their successors; authority that was given to them by Jesus Christ Himself?

… Continued, along with verse 11:
“Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings; yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.”

Like slandering the saints in heaven, who God has glorified with Him, & their intercessory prayers for us?

2 Peter 2:12
“But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand.”

Matters like the denial of doctrines that are taught by the Church based on it’s authority? Like “the marian doctrines, purgatory and indulgences?” Praying to the saints for their intercession? How we are saved?

Similar questions arise when reading the rest of the chapter. I must say, many anti-Catholic fundamentalists sound an awful lot like the false prophets & false teachers that Peter wrote about.

Are you personally and privately interpreting these verse? I thought catholics were forbidden to do so. 🤷

Yeah, I know. But he’s got a much worse problem than some “Catholic” teachings not being in the bible. Most of the fundamental tenets of Christianity are not in the bible, if by “in the bible” we mean that anybody who reads the bible will find and believe them. Just ask those bible believers who reject the Trinity or the divinity of Christ or the non-salvific nature of baptism or the symbolic-only nature of the Eucharist (the latter two being every bible-believing Catholic and Orthodox, at a minimum).

No, he (and all “bible-only” Christians) has much bigger problems regarding finding the doctrines of Christianity in the bible than just the occasional “Catholic” teaching.

Is this your private personal interpretation of this verse or has your church infallibly interpreted this verse as you do?
Can you tell us what you have as evidence that Catholics are forbidden to interpret a verse of scripture…other than what you “think”? Did you watch the “Stooges” when Curly (proper names are capitalized…as in Catholic) said " I’m trying to think but nothing happens".
This is an easy question for you. Try answering one for a change. Don’t give your answer without a citation or it isn’t an answer.
By the way, you non denoms I guess have an advantage when it comes to interpretation, as you are entitled to interpret, not just a passage, but whole books, the whole Bible…just as you wish.

What i’m exhorting you and others of your church is to look deeply what your church teaches and promotes as the truth. There are many doctrines and practices that are unbilical and not what Christ taught.
This is complete and total hogwash.

I have yet to encounter an unbiblical teaching of the Catholic Church, and I hear this stuff all the time from n-Cs/a-Cs but none have yet been able to substantiate any of that.

What I have have found is that we catch a tremendous amount of flak from a host of people who talk this stuff when in fact their fundamental doctrine is itself grossly unbiblical, namely Sola Scriptura. My problem then becomes the fact that, having begun with an error they then have constructed some 500 years worth of subsequent and cascading errors in doctrine and teaching, including the creation of a different and deficient gospel that may actually endanger the souls of those they evangelize!

What I’m exhorting people to do is to take a careful and prayerful look at what they are being taught outside of the Catholic Church with the honesty to check their sources objectively and prove whether they have been taught the truth.

However, I do not go into n-C forums to evangelize them away from their faith because I feel that if they want the truth they know where to find us.

JA4, you’re out of line. :yup: :tsktsk:

Can you show a couple of examples where Jesus based His teachings on tradition?
Luke 11:51. Jesus taught as fact the Jewish tradition, found nowhere in the Old Testament, that Zechariah died between the altar and the sanctuary.

When i have asked for some kind of list for sacred traditions i’m either told i can’t know them or there is no list or i’m given a couple of things that might be Sacred Traditions. These are the kinds of answers i have seen.
I suggest that you read the ECF because that is where you’ll find a ton of stuff that was obviously handed on orally by Our Lord and the apostles. I doubt very seriously if you have bothered to do this much…You might miss Sunday School because you are wrapped up in your studies. 😛
Has there ever been any false teacher in the catholic church?
Yep! They’re called heretics and they were refuted in councils. They did not change the teaching of the Catholic Church.
Has there ever been a bishop,
Yep! They’re called heretics and they were refuted in councils. They did not change the teaching of the Catholic Church.
Nope! Not a single one. Our Lord has kept His promise that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth and that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)
or priest who has ever taught any false doctrine in the church?
Yep! They’re called heretics and they were refuted in councils. They did not change the teaching of the Catholic Church. BTW, one of these was Martin Luther.
Are you personally and privately interpreting these verse? I thought catholics were forbidden to do so. 🤷
Looks more to me like he has offered scripture that speaks for itself. Let the Holy Spirit do the application to your heart.
What slandering are you referring to? Is it slander to point out that the scriptures never exhort or teach us to pray to dead or living saints?
In your errant and uninformed opinion. 🤷 That will not be evident if you study the Bible. try this study. The Communion of Saints
Is this your private personal interpretation of this verse or has your church infallibly interpreted this verse as you do?
Not likely. Unlike so many n-C communities who sit around and try to catalogue verses that mean this or that. Of course, if you got yourself a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and studied it and followed up on the footnotes, you’d find the best Bible Study ever. I doubt you have either the courage or commitment to discovering the truth. I’d love for you to prove me wrong on that, but I won’t hold my breath. I’d most likely look like this…

As usual though, you make a lot of allegations and yet never actually enter into the discussion to compare notes and discover the truth on any given issue. No one can help you if you won’t do your own homework. 🤷

Are you saying that the apostles knew of the assmption of Mary
Here you are dead wrong.
Reasons Why I Believe in The Blessed Virgin Mary’s Assumption
and purgatory even though its not recorded in their sacred writings i.e. the Scriptures? Where is this to be found in the deposit of faith?
Here again you make an misinformed allegation.
Biblical and Jewish Traditional Beliefs About Purgatory.

You can allege anything you want, but you are way off base. Just because some preacher(s) or Teacher(s) sold you all this bill of goods doesn’t make it factually accurate. As I found out for myself.
