Are you saying that the apostles knew of the assmption of Mary and purgatory even though its not recorded in their sacred writings i.e. the Scriptures? Where is this to be found in the deposit of faith?
“Where in the deposit of faith” is a nonsensical question. Where in your own mind is your name? Where in your own mind is your telephone number? Where in your own mind is 1+1=2?

The entire deposit of faith is, by analogy, in the “mind” of the Church. It is what she was given, and what she has always known, and what she knows to this day, and what she will know until the end of the world.

When i have asked for some kind of list for sacred traditions i’m either told i can’t know them or there is no list or i’m given a couple of things that might be Sacred Traditions. These are the kinds of answers i have seen.
Can you not accept these answers, and go your way in peace? Why does this have to eat at you so much, so in turn, you eat at us?
Has there ever been any false teacher in the catholic church? Has there ever been a bishop, pope or priest who has ever taught any false doctrine in the church?
I will add that there have been Popes who have erred. It is clear that you do not distinguish between individuals committing sins, and the Holy Bride of Christ. The fact that you are not able to perceive the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church is a blindness that results from the error of Sola Scriptura, and is apparently fueled by the hatred and bigotry that you have been fed. Is that proverb true “you are what you eat”?
What slandering are you referring to? Is it slander to point out that the scriptures never exhort or teach us to pray to dead or living saints?
It is, but I understand that you really don’t see it. No, the greater slander is to say that the Word of God is limited to the Scriptures, and to purport that Jesus did not keep His word to the Church.

Somebody already gave you the Catechism. You can see the footnote references for every teaching. Often it will be Scripture. Often it will be from something in Tradition. Sometimes both. All you have to do is pick it up and read it. Go to an official Church source if you are confused. Be freed from the darkness, ja…:newidea:

And send me that Scripture verse when you have it. 😃

This is because every-time we give you references you turn a deaf ear to what we say and you do not read them. Instead you go back to your old tired and insincere game of pop-bag or rope-a-dope rhetorical questioning and posturing. Are you so starved for fellowship, interaction and attention in your own protestant bible-only church that you have to come to a Catholic Forum to get attention and affirmation?

A troll by any other name is still just another lost soul seeking to exact its toll to pay the devil’s dole…

It would be difficult to write as history something that had not yet occurred. 🤷

Since you reject the portion of the Deposit of Faith that you cannot find in the Scripture, you will not be able to access this part of the Revelation. 🤷

Be it done to you according to your faith (or in this case, the lack of it!)

Bad news MarcoPolo. He has read the Catechism, and even posted quotes from it here. His heart is so hard that it cannot go in. It is like the seed falling on rocky ground. :crying:

However, I will join with you in prayer “be freed from the darkness”!

I have a copy of the catechism on my desk. There are “notes” on the bottom of the page. For example on page 126 it has some references that i don’t understand. Are the notes numbered 151, 152 and 153 traditions of some kind? Can you tell me specifically what these are referring to?
And send me that Scripture verse when you have it. 😃

So you agree that the apostles knew nothing of this?

I’m not quite sure what this “Deposit of Faith” is. What is it, who determines what is it composed of?

JAK,

will you answer this?
We don’t know exactly how this was done in some parts of the OT. Its possible some things were taught orallly at first. Its also possible that a prophet or someone close to an prophet wrote down first in private and then spoke the word to the people. In the time of Jesus its quite possible that some of the people who heard Him teach wrote it down especially if they thought He was a prophet or speaking for God. By the time Luke is about to write his gospel he certainly implies this in Luke 1:1-4.

So you agree that the apostles knew nothing of this?
That’s not what was said. The apostles most certainly knew of these things, or they would not be part of the deposit of faith. The Assumption of Mary would obviously only be known after the fact.
I’m not quite sure what this “Deposit of Faith” is. What is it, who determines what is it composed of?
It is everything given to the apostles, and thus to the Church, by God. And God thus determines what it is composed of.

BTW, this is all in that catechism you keep on your desk, starting at paragraph 74.

This is complete and total hogwash.
Lets see if this is hogwash. We know the assumption of Mary is not in Scripture. Even catholic writers admit to this. In fact its totally unknown for centuries. Next, where in Scripture do we find that she is the medatrix of all grace? If you know the scriptures you would know that its not even hinted at.
We can add to this confessing to a priest for forgiveness. You will not find such a thing in the NT. In fact the word of priest --hiereus- is not used as a term to describe an office of a priest in the NT. The apostolic fathers Polycarp, Ignatius and Clement don’t use the term “priest” to describe Christian ministers. The first use of the term is not until the 3rd century by Origen.
If something is not in Scripture its unbiliblical. It would then be a teaching of men. There is no getting around this…
I have yet to encounter an unbiblical teaching of the Catholic Church, and I hear this stuff all the time from n-Cs/a-Cs but none have yet been able to substantiate any of that.
i gave you a couple above. How about papal infalliblity? Since there is no pope or supreme leader in the NT (Peter does not function in this capacity even though used mightly by God). It took time before it can be said there was one universal and recognised head of the church.
What I have have found is that we catch a tremendous amount of flak from a host of people who talk this stuff when in fact their fundamental doctrine is itself grossly unbiblical, namely Sola Scriptura. My problem then becomes the fact that, having begun with an error they then have constructed some 500 years worth of subsequent and cascading errors in doctrine and teaching, including the creation of a different and deficient gospel
that may actually endanger the souls of those they evangelize!

What I’m exhorting people to do is to take a careful and prayerful look at what they are being taught outside of the Catholic Church with the honesty to check their sources objectively and prove whether they have been taught the truth.
I could not agree you more on this. When they do they will be suprised and maybe shocked.
However, I do not go into n-C forums to evangelize them away from their faith because I feel that if they want the truth they know where to find us.
JA4, you’re out of line.
:yup: :tsktsk:

Not so. Being exposed to the truth can be a difficult thing for people. I can understand why so many hate me but i expect that. Look at the claims of your church. Compare them with Scripture and history. Its not what many catholics believe.

JA4 said: If something is not in Scripture its unbiliblical. It would then be a teaching of men. There is no getting around this…
Yet you believe in “Bible Alone” and “Faith Alone” which neither is found in Scripture… You believe in a teaching of men. There is no getting around this…

Can you tell me specifically what these are referring to?
Like on 153, where is says “St. Ignatius of Antioch”, that means St Ignatius of Antioch is being quoted. And where it says cf. 1 Cor 2:8, that means go read 1 Cor 2:8. And 152 where it says Dei Filius…that means it is quoting the Church document Dei Filius. It’s really not a complicated system. http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/4.gif

I suggest that you read the ECF because that is where you’ll find a ton of stuff that was obviously handed on orally by Our Lord and the apostles. I doubt very seriously if you have bothered to do this much…
I get the impression that you really don’t know either. Since it appears you have read the ECF why don’t you give me a couple of examples of things that were “handed on orally by Our Lord and the apostles”?
You might miss Sunday School because you are wrapped up in your studies.
Are you mocking Sunday schools?

Disrespecting the Catholic faith is a violation of Forum Rule “Conduct #7”.

Please stop bearing false witness against the Catholic faith by stating Catholicism does not gibe with Scripture.

I am assuming you clicked on the link “a different and deficient gospel” and read the article? So you are agreeing blackie is right? Then why are you not shocked at your own protestant beliefs?

Or did you just ignore the link as usual?

What speciifc Sacred Traditions is St. Ignatius of Antioch and Dei Filius referring to?

There is none. We do have the 4 gospels that are written. That much we agree on. What we don’t have evidence for is any oral teachings of Jesus outside the NT. If there is, then what exactly is it that Jesus spoke that is not recorded in the written Scriptures?

JoeyWarren;3535352]I am assuming you clicked on the link “a different and deficient gospel” and read the article? So you are agreeing blackie is right?
Not entirely. There are many questions that could be asked about it. For example he claims that baptism washes away sins. However if we take that statement without taking other scriptures into consideration we would get the idea that baptism alone is capable of washing away sins. The scriptures never teach this. What is required before baptism is confession of sin and belief that Christ died for those sins and rose again. After a person makes this profession of faith then he-she should be baptised. In Romans 10:9-10 and I Corinthians 15:1-4 which both speaks of being saved say nothing of being baptised.
i don’t know if he intended to deal with all the revelant verses that relate to this issue. It can get complicated.
Then why are you not shocked at your own protestant beliefs?

Why would i be on this?
Or did you just ignore the link as usual?
i did miss it at first but went back to read it. Thanks for pointing it out…👍
