I did but it doesn’t say “alone.” The word alone to me doesn’t make sense. It’s always been Scripture Alone and Faith Alone. The Alone is my issue. Why is it an issue? Because its not in the Bible. You’ll find faith alone in James but that verse disprove faith alone.

So the discussion on 2 Tim 3:16-17 is done. It doesn’t prove the Bible is the SOLE authority on all matters. I’m not convince. The argument is even false… and doesn’t make sense.

The Catholic interpretation makes perfect sense.
That sounds good to me. Stay right where you are

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree.

Until, of course, you set up a thread, say in the Orthodox board, or on the Apologetics Board, discussing what this authority really means, and if it means what you think it means.
Noma,

You are entitled to your opinion. I am not open to discuss this with you because I know you have a total disagreement with the Catholic Church, which I see is very hostile. I may want to discuss this issue on a later time.

Why do I not wish to discuss this issue with you? Well, I’m not well verse with the Orthodoxy like I do with the Protestants. If I really must discuss this issue, I need to learn more about the Eastern Orthodox Church. So have you decided to become an Orthodox Christian?

also, if they are written, how come they weren’t refered to as epistles or letters, but described as oral? It didn’t say, “remember what the apostles wrote?” It asked if they remember what they said.

I don’t have to repeat the same scripture over and over do I see post 636
what is it? sole authority or not? post 636 says it is. Now you’re like, “I’m not making it the sole authority, see post 636” while that post says it is. you’re contradicting yourself now.

The verse says I can be complete using scripture alone.
No it doesn’t - it says it’s profitable in HELPING make a complete Christian - one among a number of things that are all needed. Not that it’s the only requirement.

Let me make an analogy - ‘your right leg is profitable for running, jumping, skipping and walking. That you may be a complete person physically.’ Does it mean you can do all of those things with your right leg alone? Or be a complete person physically with only a right leg? Of course not!

See post 636 then read verse 17 and read my comment.

The Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus: because he hath often refreshed me, and hath not been ashamed of my chain: 17 But when he was come to Rome, he carefully sought me, and found me. 18 The Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou very well knowest. 2 Tim. 1:16-18

Challenge for newbie,

Why is Paul asking the Lord mercy for the House of Onesiphorus? Onesiphorus is mention again in 2 Tim 4:19 Did something bad happen to our Ephesus Christian friend?

I already know why he is asking the Lord to give Onesiphorus for mercy but I’m not gonna spoil it.

Wasn’t Mathew an apostle.
aren’t his words in the book of Matt.
Wasn’t john an apostle?
his words are in the book of John
Without your help, i’m lost. Just like if i read the bible without Sacred Tradition. Wow, well what verse from the apostles (notice the verse says apostles, not just one) was the author of Jude refering to? He couldn’t, because it wasn’t written down. If it were, he’d have said so. So please, if you make the assertation that it’s in the gospel, you gotta back it up buddy. So again, please give book, chapter, and verse. Otherwise, you’ll have to accept that some teachings can be conveyed by word of mouth, and not by written word (bible) alone.

Paul asks for mercy for onesiphorus because onesiphorus helped him when he was jail. False teachers in ephesus got the upper hand and tried to turn the church against him. I believe Paul is just praying that God shows onesiphors mercy on judgement day. While also telling timothy that onesiphorus helped him out a great deal in times of trouble

How do you know that Paul is praying for mercy in behalf of Onesiphorus on judgment day? Why couldn’t God grant mercy to Onesiphorus at the time when this Epistle was written? Why couldn’t Onesiphorus himself pray directly to God instead of having Paul pray for him?

Oh I didn’t understand the question. You want to know the word of the apostle that says: there would be mockers in the last time that would walk according to their own lusts. give me a few minutes. Answer 2peter3:3

Couldn’t I say “Father God grant my friend Manny mercy because helped me so much on that apologetics thread”

You could, but what if I don’t want you to pray for me because I can pray to God directly without any extra prayers from other Christians.

You wouldn’t know I was praying for you just as onesiphorus probably didn’t know either. But if you asked me not to pray for you I would oblige

Let’s get back on Onesiphorus? Paul prayed for His household. Do you know if Onesiphorus was alive at time, or was he dead?
