Small quibble - it wasn’t Elizabeth, it was her daddy who did the confiscating.
Hmmm…for some reason I’d thought she’d done the larger amount.

Her power rested with the newly-minted millionaires who so profited from raiding the Catholic Church’s property; it of course makes more sense that this power base was manufactured by Henry VIII and exploited by Elizabeth.

I’m reading quite a bit about the English Reformation right now, so I will have to pay close attention to the confiscation scheme.

(Sorry 'bout the OT little bunny trail here!)
I’ve done extensive reading on the Tudor era, and from what I recall Henry VIII needed money since he’d blown it all in the early days of his reign throwing elaborate parties all the time, so he closed down monasteries and churches right and left and looted them. This was all coupled with his declaration that he was the Head of the Church of England and so any tithe money that used to go to Rome came to him instead.

Yes, Elizabeth did fine people for not attending Anglican services, but I don’t think there were many (if any) valuables left to confiscate in the Catholic churches by the time she took the throne. What we Americans have trouble grasping is the mindset of rulers at the time - if you did not obey/agree with your sovereign in matters of faith, then you were (theoretically) prone to rebellion in other areas and before you know it, anarchy!

It is a fascinating time period to study. I tend to pounce on any new books that come to the library on the topic. I even read the fiction just to pick it apart and find where the author took artistic license.
