SPLIT: How does the catholic church define Tradition?

You don’t give the Holy Spirit enough credit in providing 100% accuracy in verbal transmission of Traditions within the Church. I believe God when He promised to guide His Church into all truth. I believe God that the gates of Hell will never prevail against His Church. You don’t believe His Church teaches all truth, correct? Therefore, if it doesn’t teach all truth, then you must think the Church teaches lies. Who is the father of lies? Satan. Where does Satan reside? Hell. If the Church teaches lies, then that means the gates of Hell prevailed against it. God said this will not happen and it hasn’t.
What “verbal transmission of Traditions within the Church” are you referring to? Can you give me a couple of examples and who spoke them?

What “facts” of Mary’s supposed assumption are you referring to? It has already be established that it is not known what happened to her. There are no “facts” that can be shown to support any assumption.
What about the fact that it is part of Sacred Tradition?

“If the Holy Virgin had died and was buried, her falling asleep would have been surrounded with honour, death would have found her pure, and her crown would have been a virginal one…Had she been martyred according to what is written: ‘Thine own soul a sword shall pierce’, then she would shine gloriously among the martyrs, and her holy body would have been declared blessed; for by her, did light come to the world."
Epiphanius, Panarion, 78:23 (A.D. 377).

“[T]he Apostles took up her body on a bier and placed it in a tomb; and they guarded it, expecting the Lord to come. And behold, again the Lord stood by them; and the holy body having been received, He commanded that it be taken in a cloud into paradise: where now, rejoined to the soul, [Mary] rejoices with the Lord’s chosen ones…” Gregory of Tours, Eight Books of Miracles, 1:4 (inter A.D. 575-593).

“As the most glorious Mother of Christ, our Savior and God and the giver of life and immortality, has been endowed with life by him, she has received an eternal incorruptibility of the body together with him who has raised her up from the tomb and has taken her up to himself in a way known only to him.” Modestus of Jerusalem, Encomium in dormitionnem Sanctissimae Dominae nostrae Deiparae semperque Virginis Mariae (PG 86-II,3306),(ante A.D. 634).

“It was fitting …that the most holy-body of Mary, God-bearing body, receptacle of God, divinised, incorruptible, illuminated by divine grace and full glory …should be entrusted to the earth for a little while and raised up to heaven in glory, with her soul pleasing to God.” Theoteknos of Livias, Homily on the Assumption (ante A.D. 650).

“You are she who, as it is written, appears in beauty, and your virginal body is all holy, all chaste, entirely the dwelling place of God, so that it is henceforth completely exempt from dissolution into dust. Though still human, it is changed into the heavenly life of incorruptibility, truly living and glorious, undamaged and sharing in perfect life.” Germanus of Constantinople, Sermon I (PG 98,346), (ante A.D. 733).

Do you believe the catholic church was wrong in the inquistions?
Do you believe the catholic church was wrong when they condemned Joan of Are and later made her saint?

Do have you authority to say Protestants are wrong?
In our perfect hindsight we all recognize that *some aspects *of the inquisitions were deeply flawed in their approach to their task. The doctrine of Infallibility applies ONLY to the TEACHING authority of the Church. The Inquisitions did not teach “wrong” doctrine.

As far as i can tell the baptist got it right on these doctrines. It does not mean everything they do is correct.
Take the catholic church. It has somethings right and has gone other things wrong and has even admitted to them.

I hope that everyone reading this can see the obvious fallicies in these statements. Over and over, this poster refuses to accept the difference between doctrine, dogma, disciplines, and practices. Even after it has been patiently explained to him many times. This is not a misunderstanding, or a “just asking” or search for the truth.

These are part of an ongoing, continual attempt to attack the Catholic Church and the faith of Catholics on a Catholic forum right in front of you. There is no charity or willingness to have a discussion in these posts, they are cleverly worded to always be on the attack and to always be offensive to Catholics.

It is a stubborn and willfulness to ignore the Truth (at it’s best) or complicit with the demonic (at it’s worst).

Every reader can decide for themselves.

The OT Scriptures were already the Scriptures for the church when Peter wrote his letter. Secondly, if were right about the date of some of the other books and letters of the NT some were already written before Peter wrote this.
Thirdly, where do the apostles refer to their oral teachings as Scripture?
In the first century, the Jewish canon was generally agreed upon but it was not set. The Saducees rejected all but the Pentateuch. The canon was not closed. I believe this is partly why the NT Church could refer to Paul’s writings as “scripture”. Not only was the canon still opent, but because of this, the word had not yet acquired the power it took on after the closing of the canon.

Do you realize this same kind of thing goes on in the catholic church? Catholics believe different things among themselves just as protestants do.
Take the Sedevacantist in the catholic church who don’t believe the current pope is legit and if i’m not mistaken the mass of today is also wrong since its not in Latin. This catholic movement as far
i can tell they reject some or all of Vatican 2.
, , , and they are not in Communion with the Bishop of Rome. They are Protestants from a Catholic culture and in Catholic costume.

I could give you a partial list, yes. Why do you need one from me? You’ve been given numerous examples of Sacred Tradition throughout your two-year stint here on CAF. Do you believe the gates of Hell have prevailed against His Church? Do you agree with post #126?

What do you think what “doctrine” the inquistions were working on? What doctrine were the popes using to justify them?

Do you think that as a catholic you have a responsiblity to listen carefully to what your priest, bishop or catholic prof says and teaches and if they are not in harmony with catholic doctrine you should hold them accountable in some fashion? ( I know this would be difficult to carry out to actually do something about it).

There were many inquisitions in several countries. We still have the inquisition under the Holy Office. The business of that office is to deal with doctrinal abuses being promulgated by Catholics in public positions of teaching authority: professors, priests, bishops. You could look up the list of people whose theology has been challenged and whose work has received a monitum (warning) or who have been silenced by the HO over the past couple of decades. The HO walks a fine line to discern the borders of honest inquiry and outright dissent. They have a job on their hands to assure orthodox teaching without becoming oppressive/suppressive. I wouldn’t want the job.

There actually are systems in place to do this. As you note, it is difficult because nobody is trigger happy. Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.

I lieu of the fact that you have been given the answer to this question already, I am beginning to believe that your intention is either one of to feign ignorance or an attempt to frustrate posters.

Southern baptist.
Hmm, the Southern Baptist Convention was started in May 1845 in Augusta, Georgia; following a split from the Triennial Baptist Convention which was established in the United States in 1814. Doesn’t sound like it was founded by Christ and His Apostles to me.

Its not necessary for a church to be founded by an apostle but does that church teach what the apostles taught. That is what matters. In fact Tertullian and Gregory of Nazianzus taught this also.

If not founded by the apostle’s, how would it be know what the apostles taught?

I’m asking for the proof for the “**verbal transmission **of Traditions within the Church”. How are you going to demonstrate for example what an apostle taught verbally if its not written down?
Can you do that?
