This maybe out of the topic but can i ask if you can give me a “Berean Baptist” Name who was present during the council of carthage or council of nicea when the bible was finalized? so that I can search what was his point of view during that time on how the considered the Bible books to be INSPIRED.
Ladies and Gentlemen and if you permit me Brothers and Sisters,

At this point i think it would be good for us to do a quick stock take of our discussion. The original discussion is around the statement “JESUS is not found outside the church” and whilst in this discussion, i have noticed that the the church in this context refers to the Catholic Church exclusively (please correct me if i understood this to be wrong). To this part of the discussion i did not comment further as i thought that the original discussion would become diluted with other discussions and therefore result in new unresolved positions. Yes, i did detect that the discussions suddenly took on a new focus and that is regarding Sola Scriptura versus Scrripture together with Church Authority and Tradition.

At this junction, i would like to propose the following way forward for your consideration/ comment.
  1. That while the original discussion was around the statement “JESUS is not found outside the Church” there seems to have been a little but significant shift from this point to a point that JESUS could be found to some extent outside the Church but not fully.
  2. An arguement on the scripture “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am i in their midst” is estaablished as the spoken words of JESUS. Howvere, this cannot be read in isolation. It must be read with Tradition (Capital T) in order for us to establish a much more acurate context. It was also stated that the reference of this text is about JESUS speaking about HIMSELF and in no way suggests that even if HE is there, the two or three will still not find HIM. It was also stated that the two or three does not constitute a church.
Now the other conversation regarding Solar Scripture versus Scripture and Tradition/ Church Authority. I must admit that one arguement that asked my resposne is still not clear in my mind and therefore i took the most dangerous route and based my response on what i assumed to be the question. I hope that the individual help me find clarification in what he/ she was asking me to respond on.

NOw there was a strong argument put forward in that Scripture before it was bedded down as scripture was once Tradition. This implies that all scripture was once Tradition (again i hope i have not misunderstood the (name removed by moderator)ut of some comments made in this thread - thank GOD for Threads - we can always go back and check our understanding). Based on this, i offer an arguement in support of this position.

Premise 1 - All scripture was once Tradition
Premise 2 - There was always a point prior to the Council of Nicea when the HOLY Bible was not fully canonised/ complete.
Premise 3 - Further Traditions has been developed/ revealed before and after the Council of Nicea that is not included in the Holy Bible.
Premise 4 - Tradition holds the same status as the Bible in that both Tradition and Scripture arose from the same Source (DIvine Inspiration/ Divine Revelation) and the DIvine Source is Truth.
Premise 5 - Tradition (Capital T) can be refered to as scripture and scripture can be refered to Tradition (See premise 1)

Therefore we can necessarily conclude that the Bible should be reviewed/ updated to include Accepted Traditions and to further conclude that the Authority of the Church must establish criteria for the continouos updating of Scripture so that includes all Traditions,

*** Now please help me and comment on (a) the logic of this arguement and (b) if this logic goes through, then can we expect to see an updated edition of the Bible (c) If (b) is not supported, why is support for (b) refused and how will we remain consistent with the Tradition of ensuring all Traditions are compiled into one collection under the title “The Hly Bible”.

Again, if i am coming accross as being too insistent, forgive me and please also feel free to call a spade a spade - if you think that this arguement reeks of insanity, please say it freely.

GOD bless you.

Interesting ask - it does not matter if it is out of topic or not but what this request does with immediate effect is to compel me to admit ignorance and initiate me to go and find the information you request. If you find this information before me, will you share it likewise. I thank you in advance.

First of all the Baptist church as we know it was not founded until the 17th Century. Second the Bereans were Jews that Paul ministered to in the book of Acts who “searched the Scriptures daily to find out if these things were true”. The scriptures they searched were what we know as the Old Testament since the New Testament had not been published or even written at the time of Paul. The New Testament is actually a Catholic book:)

well as previously mentioned, i will have to verify what you say and i would be very grateful if you can give me a citation/ link for this information.

I have one question. Does this person whoever they are, declare the eucharist to be the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Eight months ago I would have said no, it is a symbol, four months ago I started saying yes because the early church fathers said yes.

So I had to find a Christian Church that taught that, and the only one that came up was Catholic, and I didn’t even know that they did teach that.

Dear Bro Dary B (if i am allowed to call you brother)

I am not sure whether the person you are referring to is me. I must say that this is a good discussion to have and therefore i would like to make 2 suggestions.
  1. Would you consider starting this thread so that can be the focus of the discussion or
  2. do you want to have a private discusion with me so as to not further dilute the current discussion.
I also would like for you to comment on my arguement that all TRadition (Capital T) be included in the Holy Bible and that this process must continue for as long as Traditions are confirmed (not sure how this happens). This would be more like an updating process)

Hi my friend, brother. The reason I ask this question is not to start a new thread, it is to continue the existing one. It might sound off topic but it is not, because you cannot have a link to the first century believer without the Catholic Church. I have no problem with tradition, and I believe the Church has been given privy information because Jesus Christ is working working working in that Church because it is His, not ours.

Incidentally that person was not you, it was the whoever they are historical person. I should have perhaps said that first rather than as a second.

Thank you for that and i am honoured to ejoy both friend and brother status with you. thank you for this. I will do some searching to find out what there is to know about this but can i ask that you please comment on the arguement i am putting for Tradition. This was developed based on this thread

First I would like to say that it is good that you are at least curious about what the Catholic Church believes and teaches.🙂 One very good and very readable reference is a booklet published by Catholic Answers called “Pillar of Fire/Pillar of Truth”. It has only about 3o pages but it is excellent as a digest of Catholic teaching. As to the Bereans that Paul preached to and they “searched the Scriptures diligently” that reference is Acts 17:10-13. Acts 17:10 said that Paul preached to them in a synagogue (a Jewish house of worship). A good reference on the web is www.churchmilitant.tv. In addition to short daily programs called “The Vortex” they have also produced a wide variety of videos on Church teachings, history, etc. The Vatican itself is another good online reference at www.vatican.va. I can’t forget www.ewtn.com that is operated by the Eternal Word Television Network and also Catholic Answers where you are right now. I don’t want to overwhelm you but there are gobs of good Catholic links and references on the web alone. I hope something here helps.

God bless:)

An interesting thing about the Bereans is that there is no actual record that they converted. I think that is significant, because in Acts you have a whole lot of yes’s and a whole lot of no’s, but the Bereans don’t seem to have done either, they were the we’ll-think-about-it’s.

Tradition is only complicated because it has ownership. The Bible does not belong to anyone but God. Tradition on the other hand has ownership, and contextually the tradition belongs to the Catholic Church. Because it has ownership anyone outside that Church is going to have a problem with it. I personally don’t have a problem with it for the reasons I have already stated, but then the problem is-was mine because I could not claim ownership of it. It is my intention to change that this-next year by the grace of God.

That is something that has bugged the bejiggers out of me about so much of the New Testament especially Acts. There are so many places where it is left up to us to try and speculate what happened next. Whether a person ever converted or not, or who it was who ran off naked when Jesus was captured in the Garden, or why the Gospel of John was seemingly written in the third person, or just what was meant when someone was exhorted to “believe on the Lord and thou shall be saved” or how the gate to the prison was opened on its own so Peter could walk out past the guards, or when Jesus was about to be thrown over a cliff at Nazareth and he suddenly just walked away from the crowd. See what I’m saying?🤷

Yes I see what you are saying. My understanding of the Berean’s is that they are highly regarded by the protestant sola scriptura movement as a model of par excellence. But they obviously didn’t know scripture well enough to know whether these things were true that they would have to search them and there is no indicator that they ever said yes. Compared to the many people who said yes in Acts, I would think these were more a model of excellence than the Bereans.

Interesting concept that I had never thought of. I know from my experience as a Protestant that the Bereans were highly regarded as a model to be followed. One other thing I didn’t see was that the only Scriptures people had in those days were what we know as the Old Testament. Our New Testament was not even put together for another some 400 years. It could be that some of those in Berea may have “gotten it” and converted but we don’t know if all of them did. Even today there are people that have access to the Bible, a church on every corner, religious books ad infinitum but still may not be knowledgeable as to how to follow Jesus in any meaningful way. Surprisingly this even includes some CLERGY!🤷

Acts 17:11 - Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

I think that to say that the protestants thought highly of the Brereans is a little inaccurate if i may say so. This is what the Bible verse says that the Brerean Jews were of noble character. I do not think that modeling this characteristic should be exclusively for the protestant to promote - after all i am sure that we should all receive the message with eagerness and we should all examine the scriptures to see is the message is according to what was written - what this implies is that the brereans were not about to just trust Paul’s interpretation of the Scripture. They wanted scripture to test it.

NOw even though there be an arguement that the New Testament was not complete by that time - the real deal is that even though it may not been completed by that time, whatever was being said/ preached/ done had to conform to what the scriptures stated.

The implications of the Brereans attitude is that scripture if only the old testament at that time was still going to the standard that was going to be adhered.

heaven and earth may pass away but…

I hope you remember that the Word of God is Jesus Christ and not scripture.
Also…inorder to use scripture as a means of verifying what was preached to them…the Beroeans had to know how to read in the first place(surely one of the reasons they were called noble as you quoted in Acts 17:11 as compared to those from Thessalonica)
If you cannot read…you cannot interprete scripture or “proof text” and thus sola scriptura falls apart.
However God intended his WORD to be preached to every one…wether you could read or not…wether literate or illetrate…wether blind/dumb/deaf or healthy…and that is what the Church(which is the custodian of the WORD of GOD) does so well…without which the objective of spreading the gospel to the ends of the world would not have been attained.
It is also worth noting the the protestant reformation occured shortly after the invention of the printing press!(does that ring any bell to you?)

It has been said that in Catholicism even the buildings are designed to “Preach” to you! Starting with the threshold you cross when you enter. It speaks of leaving this world and its cares behind even for a few minutes and entering into God’s Presence (which is spoken of through the red candle above the altar). The stained glass windows can “speak” even to those unable to read because they depict in picture form scenes from the Gospel. The Crucifix with the crucified Jesus on it tells of the immense price God paid to save our souls and how ugly sin really is. The statues are like family “portraits” that depict heroes and heroines of the Catholic “family” our ancestors in the faith who have gone before us.

As was posted just before me, the Protestant reformation occurred about the same time as the printing press was invented. Prior to this, Bibles were hand printed and were extremely costly (I have heard they might have cost the equivalent of $250,000 just for one copy!) Compare that with today where you can just go to a store and pick out a Bible for as little as $15 in paperback. Even fancy ones that are leather bound can be had for less than $100.

please give citation for the assertion that noble character meant that they could read and write. I also want to check with you since noble character was used to describe the brereans only, does that mean that the brereans were the only ones who could read and write? i do mean to be difficult, i just want some clarification.

I’m sorry i can’t give you any citation because i was assuming that one of the attributes of their nobility was the ability to read.its a fair assumption since it is confirmed they actually could read because they examined the scriptures themselves unlike in Thessalonica where it is Paul who had to explain the scriptures to the thessalonicans(Acts 17:1-3).
However its just my opinion and i may be wrong…
I use the Christian Community Bible and Acts 17:11 reads thus:
“Its members were moreopen-minded than those in Thessalonica and welcomed the message with great enthusiasm. Each day they examined the scriptures to see if these things were so.” The word “open-minded” here csubstitutes for your “noble” and is very compatible with being literate and able to read. But this also is just my interpretation and may be wrong.
Whats important to note is that during the time of Jesus up to the renaissance reading and writting was reserved to a few in society.the majority of people in those times simply could not read nor write and i think it would have been acceptable to describe someone who was literate as “noble”.
