How sickening. I am so sick and tired of homosexuals trying to shove their pro-gay beliefs down everyone’s throats.

Why are so many Catholics signing this petition? This petition is a petition to try and force the church to publish the announcement about their gravely immoral “wedding”.

Holly, the petition in the OP was a petition in support of the Archdiocese’s action prohibiting the publishing of the announcement.

Actually, the first post has a link to both petitions. The one in support of the couple is at the beginning of the post in the area where the OP explains what’s going on. The one supporting the archdiocese is at the bottom of the post.

Here is the link again (to the one supporting the archdiocese):
If you support Archbishop Lucas’ decision to stop the printing of a lesbian couple’s “wedding” in the alum newsletter of their Catholic high school, please visit the following link, add your name to the signatures, and pass on the link to others: signon.org/sign/we-support-the-archdiocese?source=s.em.mt&r_by=5153286

Got it. :o I only clicked on the one at the bottom, which is evidently not the only Signon.org one.

We need to treat other people with respect, regardless of whether or not we agree with them.
I believe they are the ones being disrespectful by asking for affirmation and/or approval of what the Church says is a sinful state. They consider this a “celebration” (see the word in the article) and for them, this announcement is a commeration of a happy event. They expect this Catholic school to acclaim a union which our belief considers a negative and immoral bonding.

Whoa, wait, stop, think.

Does this same newsletter publish the weddings of alumnae who marry outside of the church? Most likely it publishes notices about civil and non-Christian weddings. If it does so, there’s no reason to single out same sex unions. If it has a policy to only publish notices about weddings that are recognized by the Catholic Church, then, they have a right to refuse in this case.

I’m getting mightily tired of Catholics who seem to think that living a homosexual lifestyle is somehow a graver sin than any other. I think if the Catholic Church expects people who are attracted to their own gender to live a celibate life, the the onus is on Catholics to treat these people (who are being asked to make a huge sacrifice) with the utmost respect. Dialogue and civilized debate is what’s required, not the drawing of battle lines.

So, if you’ve never masturbated, had extra or premarital sex, looked at porn, go ahead and cast the first stone (in the eyes of the Church all of these things are no less sinful than having a same sex partner). By all means, engage with this issue, but please do so with love & respect.
Well at least with civil unions they can give off the illusion that perhaps those in the couple are living morally.

I guess my badly-expressed point is, no one would question the validity of the above-mentioned marriages should they be publicized in a Catholic school alumni newsletter, provided one party’s name was recognizably male and the other female. I wonder if we single out same sex couples because it’s impossible to ignore that their unions aren’t recognized by the Church.

I guess my points can be restated this way:
  1. It’s too easy to single out the issue of same sex unions whilst turning a blind eye to other transgressive relationships.
  2. We need to treat other people with respect, regardless of whether or not we agree with them.
  1. The Church and it’s representatives are often in the position of giving individuals the benefit of the doubt. We are often told to attribute the best intentions to someones actions, rather than the worst, when we don’t know the story behind someone’s actions.
When a couple submits a wedding announcement to a Catholic publication, it is easy to give them the benefit of the doubt. If they were married at the beach, it’s** possible **that they got a dispensation. If one party was previously married, it’s possible that the first marriage was found to be null.

No such benefit of the doubt is possible when it’s a same sex couple.
  1. You are right. I have yet to see where this couple was treated disrespectfully. But respectiing someone isn’t the same as doing whatever they want.

Signed it.

When the girls start their own archdiocese, they can publish anything they want.😉

imagines what would happen if they have their own archdiocese XD
First order of business for them - ban all straight men
Second order of business - anyone caught listening to or in possession of anything Vocaloid is automatically excommunicated with no chance of parole
Third order of business - yuri will be included in all sacraments, no questions asked

Slow down, Tiger…I can’t form a coherent reply when you get all “Computer Geek / Gamer” on me.😛

The Archdiocese is in charge of a high school newsletter??? ?? ??
Not directly, but obviously the local Bishop and his offices have the power to intervene in all things officially Catholic, in his own jurisdiction.
Are all the students at this high school *only *Catholic?
Most likely not, but then the Bishop says “no”, and that’s what matters.
Do we know if the alum newsletter announces other non-Catholic, “invalid” weddings of former students, or just the Catholic weddings?
Isn’t it a bit unfair to expect a Catholic publication - even just a newsletter - to advertise a same sex “marriage”?

(As well as undermining Catholic values by doing so, just think of the unnecessary headlines.)

Isn’t that a bit like expecting the gay press to publish an article promoting Catholic sexual morality?

😉

So…he is “permitted” to feel this way and be vocal about it?
Well, feelings aren’t legislated, even by the Church. 😉

But, no, he is not permitted to be vocal against Church teaching. The Bishops in Minnesota were very clear about the duty of Catholics to support the ammendment affirming marriage as between one man and one woman.

Yes, except for the the bishop of Saint Cloud, who has been notably silent. Also it must be noted that Fr. Bob Pierson is a member of a religious order and thus not directly reportable to the bishop but rather his religious superior. (He also seems to like to make a stand every time something like this comes up, like the election of Pope Benedict or the new direction about homosexuals in seminary, but being noticeably quiet about the rampant sex abuse at the abbey/prep school).

Thank you for your respectful response.

I need to point out, however, that non-Catholic Christian to Christian weddings are recognized by the Catholic Church but are not sacramental. Many marriages outside of the church are civil and therefore not recognized by the Church. Marriages between Christians and non-Christians can be (but not always) considered valid, but again not sacramental.
Actually that isn’t true. A marriage between two Christians is a sacramental marriage, regardless if one is Catholic and one is not. The church recognizes the marriage of non Christians as natural marriages, they are valid in eyes of the church unless they are proven invalid by the marriage tribunal.

Quite a nice little way for them to collect the identities of conservatives who don’t support MoveOn’s political agenda or the agenda of those they hold solidarity with.

You are missing the point my friend. We are called to challenge ALL sins. You would have us turn a blind eye to this immoral relationship (that should they not repent will lead to their damnation) simply because we are all sinners? That reasoning is flawed. The only reason the sins of homosexuals and abortions are challenged so much in the public square is because they are so prevalent to our society today. No sin is greater than another, but when one type of sin is pushing against Christ and His Church more than others, then that sin must be challenged and addressed first and foremost.

I’m guessing that if an alum sent in an announcement of her abortion, or her extra-marital affair, or her most recent menage a trois, they wouldn’t publish that either.

Just re-read the articles, and saw in one that the couple wasn’t approached by the newsletter writers, but a friend of theirs, to ask if they wanted their photo, etc, submitted. So the OP (and in turn, I as well) was incorrect on that point–good to clear that up.

But I’m wondering about this part in the Huffington Post story link posted by the OP. This was kind of shocking and I don’t think anyone on this thread has commented on it unless I missed it…the gay Catholic priest who is supporting gay marriage?:

And some Catholic clergy members have even come out in support of gay marriage.

Father Bob Pierson, who said he knew he was gay when we was ordained, recently asked church members in Minneapolis to vote “no” on a proposed anti-gay marriage amendment that will be put to a vote in November.

“Too many of us have been thought to think of God in terms of God’s judgement, rather than God’s tremendous love and mercy,” he said. “I do not believe the church has the right to force its moral teaching on others outside our fold.”

Here’s another article on him with his full speech:
huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/12/father-bob-pierson-gay-marriage-minnesota_n_1589996.html

So…he is “permitted” to feel this way and be vocal about it?

Ya gotta admit, the logic is lopsided…that a Catholic priest can give public speeches and be quoted in mainstream media in support of gay marriage…and yet, this couple cannot quietly have their wedding photo in their little, rinky-dink, high school alumni newsletter?
I’ve noticed on other threads you are quick to point this out, and I’ll admit, it is very serious and leads the faithful astray. That there are, unfortunately, some within the Church who attempt to undermine doctrine is fact. That faithful Catholics may NOT subscribe to their error is also fact. All we can do is cling to the Deposit of Faith and know what the Magisterium (the teaching authority of the Church comprised of the Pope and bishops) are saying on matters of faith and morals.
