Washington D.C., Mar 24, 2010 / 12:39 am (CNA).- Sister Carol Kehaan, President of the Catholic Health Association, has been awarded with one of the 20 pens used by President Barak Obama on Tuesday to sign the health care bill.

It is a presidential tradition to give out the pen used to sign the bill to lawmakers and proponents who have played a key role in any piece of major legislation.

“I have got to use every pen, so it’s going to take a long time,” said President Obama during the ceremony held at the White House’s East Room.

I’m with Sister. This was a health care plan not an abortion forum. Most Americans approve of abortion in certain situations so trying to outlaw abortion in a health bill was a losing proposition. The key to ending abortion is changing hearts and minds, not legislation.

If this bill covers more Americans so much the better.

The USCCB never tried to outlaw abortion in this battle. They merely wanted at LEAST Stupak or better language that guaranteed that the bill would not remove the conscience rights protections of health care workers and that no switcheroos would be established to create de facto public funding of abortion. (i.e. mandated coverage of abortion in the newly federally regulated insurance policies). The fact that Obama & Co steadily refused to include such clear language should be an obvious indicator of his intentions here.

Your argument is essentially the same argument used by the fetal stem cell experimenters: who cares if those unloved fetuses must die, “real” people’s lives will be saved. 😦

I think this is the part that bothers me. Was Sister really someone who played a key role and therefore deserved one of the pens? Or was this Obama;s way of sticking it to the bishops?

Abortion will be included in plan.(also sterilizations, pills,etc.) That is why Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards is joyous over its passage. Look at the last post(Post #38 by Suudy) in this thread and the poster explains how it works. Hope it helps clear up the confusion.

The problem is, this LAW (it’s not a bill anymore) won’t cover more Americans.

Up until now, both state and federal regulation – and also the insurance industry standard – has been a 65-45 percentage arrangement: 65% of income reserved for claims payment and 45% for administration and claims expense. As a result of the new law, that’s now an 85-15 percentage arrangement, and that 15% has not only to pay salaries, maintenance, upkeep of buildings, etc., it also has to pay all the increased taxes that were just passed. By definition of every state and federal insurance regulator, every insurance company is now financially unsound – and therefore subject to more frequent audits, oversight, etc.

To make matters worse, all of the insurance company out-of-pocket expenses are going to start relatively soon but the insurance companies can’t raise their premiums to recoup all those costs until January. At that point, people are going to see substantial increases in premiums and people are going to drop their coverage. So much for covering more Americans.

Just how many insurance companies does anyone think will still be in business by the time folks start clamoring to the government to fix the problem of the “mean-spirited insurance companies” who raised their prices so high? Remember, the premiums are going up because of the government, and jobs are being lost because of the government.

This is completely irrelevant. Americans believe in a lot of immoral things. Most Americans a generation or two ago thought that African-Americans were sub-human.

You CAN’T be CATHOLIC and PRO-ABORTION.You should be ashamed of yourself.If you support abortion in ANY way materially which you have just done publicly,you have self-excommunicated yourself.Better not receive the Sacraments until you speak with your Bishop and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.I’m not being judgemental I’m merely, as an act of Charity, informing you of the indisputable facts.

Obama signed off on an anti-abortion bill today.

The stem cell issue is dead. Scientists can create stem cell lines from existing cells.
 
I wonder what a pen like that is worth – maybe something like 20 pieces of silver?

Whether by accident or on purpose, you are confusing two separate issues.
  1. The Church is clear that abortion is immoral and that we must presume based on the best available science today, consistant with Sacred Tradition that life begins at conception (i.e. fertilization).
  2. It is not clear if there is ANY moral means of saving children conceived in test tubes and currently stored in freezers. This fact has NO impact on the morality of using them as “body part farms”. That is flat out immoral, even if it has the end of creating effective therapies. (This may be a moot point as pluripotent ADULT stem cells appear to be showing more promise, but the moral reasoning is still important)
In both cases (fetal stem cells and the health care big picture), the argument is often made that people are suffering and objectors need to get out of the way so those suffering people can be helped. In both cases, the help provided is a pyrric victory if the cost is the systematic killing of human beings.
