smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/married-sunday-fired-monday-churches-threaten-to-dismiss-staff-who-wed-samesex-partners-20170817-gxy4ds.html
Australia’s Catholic church is threatening to fire teachers, nurses and other employees who marry their same-sex partner if gay marriage is legalised, in a dramatic move led by the country’s most senior Catholic.

"“Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart, speaking exclusively to Fairfax Media, pointedly warned the church’s 180,000 employees they were expected to uphold its teachings “totally”, and defiance would be treated “very seriously”
I would be very emphatic that our schools, our parishes exist to teach a Catholic view of marriage,” he said. "Any words or actions which work contrary to that would be viewed very seriously.

“Our teachers, our parish employees are expected totally to uphold the Catholic faith and what we believe about marriage. People have to see in words and in example that our teaching of marriage is underlined. We shouldn’t be slipping on that,” said Archbishop Hart, who also chairs the powerful Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. He said individual hiring and firing decisions “are best dealt with on the local scene”.

Archbishop Hart was backed up by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, chair of the Bishops Commission for Catholic Education, who cautioned teachers against “undermining” their schools’ values if same-sex marriage became law.""

The church here stands up for its values in SSM. Is this also a strong message about any attempt to interfere with Canon law.

with this and with the adamant non-reporting of sex crimes or any other crimes, it appears that the Catholic Church has declared at war with the Australian government, one which will deepen, and the Church will come off worst because it will be breaking humanitarian laws. I see this happening in many countries where same-sex marriage is already law and people are jailed or fined if they refuse bake cakes for same-sex weddings, or for not allowing them in their hotels etc. Australia doesn’t yet have same-sex marriage.
There is God’s law and humanitarian laws, and this world wins the fight because good humanitarians, those who sincerely believe in human rights have the power over people’s minds and hearts, except with some dictatorships of specific ideologies where humanitarian values are enforce-ably destroyed and betrayed in favor of God’s law. What a terrible world this is, on so many levels.
It’s all very sad :bighanky:

I hope they include professed celibates who secretly violate their vows as well.

If Australian government start to buy Chinese security software, time to watch out.

Unrelated issue.

I don’t know whether you have an agenda here, SyroMalankara, however the SSM advocates repeatedly denounce Christian oppostion to SSM, and especially Catholic oppostion, by bringing up the clerical paeodphilia scandal.

And, when they bring it up, they will continue to pretend, as you seem to have done here, that the Church is doing nothing about it, and is continuing past abuses.

The Catholic Church in Australia has been acting decisively against clerical paedophilia for 20 years. A priest or religious (“celibate”) who has been convicted of paedophilia will never be employed with children again, and such has been the case for, at least, 20 years, and, afaik, they are also likely to be defrocked.

From an article in Saturday’s Australian,
Apologies are still demanded when they repeatedly have been made. Appear*ances by church leaders before the royal commission are insisted on when they already have occurred. Dreadful and genuine statistics of abuse are cited, but without the footnote that they are decades old, reduced to a — still repulsive — trickle by reforms embedded for 20 years.

No wonder our ignorant media and masses perpetuate these myths, when they are even repeated in this forum.

(And, apologies if I have misunderstood your comment. It was brief).

If Catholic schools are permitted to teach catholic moral law, then it must surely follow that it must be allowed to select and retain only those teachers who can credibly affirm that teaching. This is a logical consequence.

It is also a logical consequence of the redefinition of marriage to include SSM that we should expect to see SS couples/parents depicted as just another family variation in children’s readers, G-rated TV programs and the like. You can’t logically be accepting of one without the other.

I was referring to priests who’ve done “civil unions” in court with another male, violating their vows. However, the abuses you mention above, yes, they should be defrocked and sent to an isolated monastery, to have a lifetime of penance.

…with the adamant non-reporting of sex crimes or any other crimes…
This I assume is a reference to the seal of the confessional? A seal that existed long before there was an Australian government. So who is it that declares war?

Humanitarian is a silly choice of terms regarding KLM safety buckles that will not preserve human life in case of emergency. How is denying some of the most basic truths of human bodies and the true nature of sexuality an aspect of humanitarian values? Teaching TOB is teaching truth of human nature. Gender theory is less consistent with science than is creationism. Why do “humanitarian” beliefs ignore the truths that are so conspicuous?

Those blinded by pride and lust always seek positions of power over others. When was there a dictator who was not “benevolent?” Even godless communist and strict Machiavellian tyrants claim to do the best for the proles. What will remove the scales from the eyes of those living life as a lie?

Thanks! I did misunderstand your point. I was a little surprised that you would seem to repeating that secularist myth (about “inaction” by the Church on pedophilia, and relating it to SSM) in this forum.

👍 It’s ridiculous to teach in a Catholic school if you don’t adhere to Catholic teaching. Around here the fun of the day for two couples was to marry in spite of the fact their contract stated something about living a life in keeping with Catholic teaching on faith and morals. They both lost their lawsuit because of the contract they signed.

Everyone has sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God of course but I think knowing you are in a same sex relationship means you should teach in a public school instead.
It’s obviously public scandal.

Pedophilia is a separate issue and should be in a separate thread for goodness sakes.

Mary.

There is mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse here in Australia, its law.
Historic child sex abuse has nothing to do with SSM.

Are you discussing the seal of the Sacrament of Reconcilliation?

Australia is about to vote on SSM. After the vote, it’s going to be a very short time before we have SSM , I believe.

The Australian Catholic Church isn’t discussing anyone other then it’s employees, it doesn’t employ bakers, nor own pubs.

And the Australian Catholic Church, as with the Catholic Church makes no excuses for teaching and following and enforcing the law of God- the 10 commandments.

No Priest here does a civil union in court with another male.or female. It’s not a Catholic thing.

Anyone found guilty of child sex abuse is jailed, not sent to an isolated monestry,

It’s a criminal offence here.

This is strictly about SSM, Are you referring to clergy? I doubt they will come out and marry.

🤷
Its not widespread, and doesn’t usually make news, but it happens:
irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/gay-irish-priest-marries-long-9707711

With the Anglican ‘ministers’, the “Church” of England a whole mess of them “marry” to defy the ecclesial rules:
thedailybeast.com/meet-the-gay-priest-getting-married
metro.co.uk/2016/09/04/gay-priests-reveal-they-secretly-married-same-sex-partners-to-defy-church-of-england-6108813/

“Marrying” out of spite and protest - what a concept.

Is that a major problem? I hear a lot more about married people violating their vows.

Edit: I just saw what you said in Post #16 “Its not widespread, and doesn’t usually make news, but it happens”.

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
