What is that beautiful flag you have at the bottom?

Alex
My personal standard, as it were. 😃 I’m surprised you like it- it’s a little provocative. I put it together some months ago in an attempt to express the main themes of my blog in a single, striking visual image.

Quite likely two weeks after that as well, before something official is finalized. Possibly not, but likely.
I’ve asked this before, but I’ll try againā€¦šŸ˜ƒ

The Church has the SFO. The SSPX has the TOSF (I believe that is correct). How will this be reconciled.? ā€œSeparate, but equal*ā€, maybe?

*I use this phrase for lack of a better one. I mean NO disrespect to anyone, OK?

Sorry, I’m not familiar with those initialisms.

Is the SFO a third order ?

With regards to their opinion of the Novus Ordo, do keep in mind their very first remarks:

ā€œA criticism of the ā€œNew Riteā€ cannot be a criticism of the Mass in itself, for this is the very sacrifice of Our Lord bequeathed to His Church, but it is an examination, whether it is a fit rite for embodying and enacting this august Sacrifice.ā€

If I were to be asked to speak for them (which I would decline in other circumstances)** I would probably compare this to our own denunciation of liturgical abuses. Condemning liturgical abuses is not the same as condemning the entire Mass,** though it can be a very serious occasion of sin in some circumstances.

A disclaimer, which sometimes proves necessary in these debates: I do not attend SSPX Masses (though I could if I wanted to quite easily), I attend Mass by the FSSP, and I am not affiliated with the SSPX in any way, nor do I consider them entirely justified in their actions.
Well said.

Thank you for the reminder. This is the only post here ( and the next like it) that I really agree is appropriate at this time. Patience people. We will hear soon enough. :crossrc:May God be with them all at this time.

To be honest with you, I’ve been predicting for about two years now that Bishop Williamson and others will leave if and when the SSPX reconciles with Rome. They could quite possibly join the SSPV or something like it, and become even more radical- possibly sedevacantist.

Amen, and thank you as well for wishing the best for those who will meet

Is the SFO a third order ?
The SFO is the Secular Franciscan Order. It is a little different from a third order. It is often called the Franciscan third order (notice lower case), because it was the third order that Francis founded.

The SFO is a real canonical order of Pontifical Right founded in 1221 with its own rule, constitution, superior general, properties, mission, formation program, etc, just like our own order of friars.

The TOSF is an association of the faithful founded by some members of the SSPX who want to follow the spirit of St. Francis, but do not want to join the SFO.

The SFO has already said that unless the TOSF agrees to enter the order and go through six months of aspirancy, one year of postulancy, 18 months of novitiate and three years of temporary profession before making final profession, they cannot be received into the order and cannot use the name Franciscan. That’s why they call themselves Third Order of St. Francis and not Secular Franciscans. They cannot use that name without ther permissio nof the Minister General of the Secular Franciscans.

Franciscans have decided that any group that separated from the Franciscan family to align themselves with the SSPX must recant their affiliation with the SSPX even if there is a reconciliation, because there is an article in the rule in which Francis prohibits obedience and fidelity to any other spiritual father or leader other than himself and his canonically elected successors. The bishops of the SSPX are not successors of St. Francis any more than the General Master of the Dominicans. A Secular Franciscan vows ot obey the Secular Franciscan rule, constitution and superiors over all other authorities. Just as we friars vow to obey our rule, constitutions and our superior over all other authorities in the world.

The only authority over St. Francis and his successors are the popes. But the rule is very clear that the current Pontiff is always the highest authority, not deceased pontiffs. The current pontiff alone can interpret Catholic tradition, according to Franciscan rules and theology. We always adjust to the current pontiff and as they change we change. It’s complicated.

There is no reason why there cannot be a confraternity that is independent of the order. They can’t be an order, that’s all. They can certainly have a devotion to Francis and try to live according to his inspiratioin. No Franciscan is going to be offended by that.

Depends how good the offer is to some, but I think should an offer that is acceptable would be made, a split is inevitable. Every group that broke away and reunited with the Church never came back whole. It never happened with the Eastern Catholics (there are still more Orthodox today), it didn’t happen with the Traditional Anglicans, I don’t think it will happen with the SSPX. Unless the Vatican of course agrees to revert to pre-Vatican II. We know that will not happen.

I guess we’ll have to see what The Holy Father says on this won’t we? šŸ˜‰

Perhaps they could be affilated to a religious congregation or something?

COMMUNIQUE CONCERNING THE SOCIETY OF ST. PIUS X

VATICAN CITY, 14 SEP 2011 (VIS) - At midday today the Holy See Press Office released the following communique concerning the postion of the Society of St. Pius X:

"On 14 September at the offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Joseph Levada, prefect of the congregation and president of the Pontifical Commission ā€˜Ecclesia Dei’; Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer S.J., secretary of the congregation, and Msgr. Guido Pozzo, secretary of the pontifical commission, met with Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the Society of St. Pius X, who was accompanied by Fr. Niklaus Pfluger and Fr. Alain-Marc Nely, respectively first and second assistant general to the society.

"Following the appeal of 15 December 2008, addressed by the superior general of the Society of St. Pius X to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, the Holy Father decided to remove the excommunication against the four bishops consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre. At the same time, he approved the opening of discussions with the society in order to clarify doctrinal problems and to heal the existing rift.

"In order to put the Holy Father’s instructions into effect, a joint study commission was set up, composed of experts from the Society of St. Pius X and from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith who met in Rome on eight occasions between October 2009 and April 2011. Their discussions, which aimed to identify and study the essential doctrinal difficulties in the controversial issues, had the result of clarifying the positions of the two sides and their respective motivations.

"While bearing in mind the concerns and demands presented by the Society of St. Pius X about protecting the integrity of the Catholic faith against Vatican Council II’s ā€˜hermeneutic of rupture’ with Tradition (a theme addressed by Pope Benedict XVI in his address to the Roman Curia on 22 December 2005), the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith maintains that the fundamental basis for achieving full reconciliation with the Apostolic See is the acceptance of the text of the Doctrinal Preamble, which was handed over during a meeting on 14 September 2011. The Preamble defines certain doctrinal principles and criteria for the interpretation Catholic doctrine, which are necessary to ensure faithfulness to the Church Magisterium and ā€˜sentire cum Ecclesia’. At the same time, it leaves open to legitimate discussion the examination and theological explanation of individual expressions and formulations contained in the documents of Vatican Council II and later Magisterium.

ā€œAt the same meeting, certain suggestions were made for a canonical solution to the position of the Society of St. Pius X, with a view to achieving the desired reconciliationā€.
