St. Bede has something to say to modern Christians, Pope says.

I thought that the Pope said that Bede was the creator the AD and BC. People use this when they talk of dates…like 1953 AD and 586 BC.

I thought the Pope was wrong, but “NO.” I misunderstood the Pope.

Bede didn’t create this AD/BC of writing dates, but instead created something similar to this. The Pope rightly talked of this similar today in his message. Did anyone else pick up on the subtle point, especially in the wake of his meeting with Pelosi?

The AD/BC is called anno Domini. Dionysius Exiguus created this to number the years of both the Gregorian calendar and the Julian calendar. Dionysius was a humble monk from Romania and in 525 AD, he set forth this idea based on the birth of Jesus.

Bede, on the other hand, and that which the Pope spoke of today, used 'anno ab incarnatione Domini (or anno incarnationis dominicae) ’ meaning in the year from the incarnation of the Lord. Bede, a doctor of the church and canonized in 1899, (Bede is an old English word for prayer) used this phrase in his writings, and thus the Dionysius creation became popular.

What got blurred in history was that Bede was talking about March 25th, or the day that Jesus was conceived, not his actual pop-out-of-the-womb day of birth! What are the implications for today’s world!!!

And now, people are obscuring time even more by writing CE, and BCE meaning common era and before the common era.

How subtle! Kudos, Benedict!
