Why is today in most churches just a memorial and not a feastday when St Clare is one of the most famous saints?

Well, my first thought is “define most famous.” And just for comparison, who are some other “famous” Saints that do rank as a feast? I believe the majority of them rank as Memorials or Optional Memorials.

+Today actually is the . . . Feast Day of St. Clare . . . for those religious and laypersons who embrace Franciscan spirituality . . . below is the link on Mother Angelica’s Franciscan EWTN website for the Holy Mass readings for this Holy Franciscan Feast Day . . . as with many saints . . . memorials are the norm for the Church at large . . . but for individual spiritualities like the Franciscans, Benedictines, Carmelites, Dominicans, etc. . . . religious orders are allowed to elevate certain special memorial days . . . ***pertaining to their particular order’s saints ***. . . to feast days . . .

From the August 10, 2011 EWTN E-mail Newsletter . . .

Santa Chiara, I could really use your prayers in a matter that you know about. Thanks!

I’m aware of that:) I realize my post may have come across as terse or snarky, and for that I apologize-that wasn’t my intention.:o I was trying to point out that “famous, important, etc.” can be relative. In addition, the above poster pointed out that Orders do celebrate their founders Feast Days as Feasts (as opposed to an Optional Memorial or a Memorial.) Another question I wonder is (I don’t have my Missal in front of me) what % of Saints who founded Orders have their feasts celebrated in the Church as Feasts versus Optional Memorial or Memorial.

God Bless,
Pakesh

I asked this question because St Lawrence gets a feastday while St Clare doesn’t.
So it seems that you are not a bigger and more important saint just because you get a feastday.

After flipping through my Missal, the majority of Saints get Memorials and not feasts. Typically it’s the Apostles and Evangelists that get ranked as Feasts. Perhaps this thread will generate answers in the Liturgy forum?

God Bless,
Pakesh
