Saint Joan of Arc is my patron saint. I chose her, at age 16, because I was afraid of something/s, and I admired her for being so close to me in age and so strong. I wanted to be able to persevere faithfully in the face of fear and I liked the idea of warrior saint watching over me always.

In my adult life, I find that my admiration only deepens, but recently I have been contemplating the mystery that is God’s ways/ God’s plan. Essentially, I keep asking myself… why France? Why send Joan with the aid of Saint Michael to crown Charles VI? Why intervene in such a mortal conflict?

Which has lead me to contemplate, how much of the story is fantasy and how much is true? Was there truly a prophecy that a woman would ruin France and a maid restore it? If so… why?

I have been reading different books about Joan, but most are historical and not written from a Catholic perspective.

Some personal conclusions I have reached:

Maybe God wanted France to be kept safe for Catholics during the coming years of conflict in the reformation?

Maybe God was only trying to end the 100 years war and acted in France because he saw something in the future we will never know about, should the Burgundians and England have conquered Charles.

Thoughts? I find this topic fascinating. 🙂

This topic actually gets discussed a lot online.

One view is that England was the invader who ruled from afar and did not treat the French well. Therefore, God was on the side of France against the foreign invader.

Another view is that France produced many great saints and religious orders during the counter-reformation. England at the time strongly opposed the Catholic faith. So if England had continued to control France, then France would have also been Protestant and we wouldn’t have had all the saints and religious orders.

I thought historically it was because of the poor treatment from England and that France didn’t really have a King like they deserved to have.
