I don’t think it would be, partly because our eschatology has shifted and with it the missionary urgency. Whereas it was understood for most of salvation history that only a few are saved, we now see it the other way around: only a few are damned.
Here’s a puzzler that occurred to me recently on this topic. If the successors of Peter truly hold the keys, and whatsoever they loose on Earth is loosed in Heaven, do the Popes have the authority to broaden (or constrict, even) the “eye of the needle” so that more may pass through it?
