St. Louis Archbishop Opposes Shery Crow’s Appearance at Children’s Charity Due to Abortion Stance
foxnews.com/story/0,2933,268581,00.html

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Archbishop [Raymond Burke](javascript:siteSearch(‘Raymond Burke’)😉 denounced a Catholic charity for scheduling singer [Sheryl Crow](javascript:siteSearch(‘Sheryl Crow’)😉 to perform at a benefit concert because of the singer’s support for abortion rights.

Burke submitted his resignation as chairman of the board for the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, saying the decision to let Crow sing on Saturday left him no other choice.

“It’s very painful for me,” Burke said during a news conference Wednesday. "But I have to answer to God for the responsibility I have as archbishop.

"A Catholic institution featuring a performer who promotes moral evil gives the impression that the church is somehow inconsistent in its teaching," Burke said.

Crow is set to appear at the 19th annual benefit for the Bob Costas Cancer Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Costas will host the event, which will also feature comedian Billy Crystal.

Event organizer Allen Allred said he was disappointed with Burke’s decision, but that Crow would appear as scheduled.
“This is not an event that’s about ideology,” Allred said. “This is about helping kids.”

Good for him to not only take a difficult stand, but to also explain his decision. It’s nice to hear a bishop talk so openly about the importance of one’s soul and judgement day. Here’s another article about it. comcast.net/music/index.jsp?cat=MUSIC&fn=/2007/04/25/646842.html&cvqh=itn_crow
From the link:
“I have never applied a litmus test, Catholic or otherwise, concerning the politics or religious beliefs of any of the generous performers who have come to St. Louis to help this worthy cause, nor do I intend to … ,” Costas wrote.
I find it difficult to believe that if someone who was an outspoken supporter of the KKK wanted to be a “generous performer” for this cause, they would be allowed to do so.

Kudos to Archbishop Burke. He’s awesome and we are blessed to have him as our leader. 😃

This is our Archbishop and he is not afraid to take a stand. He is an amazing man, a Godly man and could not be more humble. He has taken a lot of criticism even before becoming the Archbishop or St. Louis.

We are blessed to have him. He was very humble the one and only time that my family met him. He took the time to try and get to know us in the short time that we had with him.

Archbishop Burke’s statements were met with disrespect. I’m in shock to think that Allen Allred thinks that the direct killing of an unborn child is an ‘ideology’. What is wrong with him!

Try reading this book. I highly recommend it! 👍

Some of the good Catholics in his diocese need to help defend him.

The posters on the St Louis Dispatch
are shredding him…and they say they are good Catholics.

I just sent a letter to the editior in the St. Louis paper, giving my support to Archbishop Burke. I am not from the area, but I think if we can bombard their local papers with support from allover the country, I think maybe we can let the Archbishop know that we are all praying for him and showing his support.

Do you have the address handy? I’ll send one as well.

I also tried to find an email address for the St. Louise Diocese on their site to send a note of support to Archbishop Burke, but couldn’t find anything…any suggestions? Otherwise I’ll do snail mail!

You can use their email form here.…scroll down to the bottom for the form.

How about helping kids get out of the womb without killing them?

Cardinal Glennon Hospital (the good Cardinal must be spinning in his grave) is part of the St. Louis University complex. Recently an appeals court in Missouri declared that St. Louis U. is NOT a “religious institution”. I think the court buttoned that one.

Good for Abp. Burke. One of the few “stand up” bishops around.

I think that the Archbishop is 100% correct and he should be strongly supported. Event organiser Mr Allred is short sighted and fails to see that it is an event about ideology.
Chery Crow openly supports abortion. Abortion means killing in utero infants. She is called to support those who were allowed to be born. What about those she deems should be aborted and thinks its good too.?
Sorry I believe you have to support your Archbishop. He is totally right.
Grace Angel.

OK! Here is how to contact the AB.
There is an organization of 400+ people in St. Louis that formed last year to defend our holy archbishop in an earlier controversy (no this is not the first time he has confronted the powers of darkness).
As you might imagine we have been very active the last few days. Someone on this forum asked how to thank Archbishop Burke. Our organization forwards positive messages to His Eminence. If you would like yours to be included you may send it to defendabpburke@sbcglobal.net. Or, if you would like to send him a personally written letter, which I am sure he would appreciate even more, you may send it to:
The Most Reverend Raymond Leo Burke
Archbishop of St. Louis
4445 Lindell Boulevard
St. Louis MO 63108
We in St. Louis have been pinching ourselves for the last several years, unable to believe that such a holy and courageous man is our spiritual leader. He is truly a man with the stature of the early Christians. He has been likened to St. John Fisher and St. Athanasius. He teaches Christ and only Christ. He is a witness to the truth such as we have not seen before. How fortunate we are to live in these perilous times with such a lion, yet such a humble man.
Bill McKenzie, coordinator
Defenders of Archbishop Burke

What kind of support does the Archbishop have from local Catholics. Sadly it sounds like it is not too great. Is it just a remanat applauding him?

BTW, for a contrast in bishops read my post on Bishop Niederauer of San Francisco.

Archbishop Burke dealt with a major controversy not long ago when he wanted to close an old ethnic Polish parish, St. Stanislaus. The fight over this parish was rather ugly and was carried out in public.

Not being from St. Louis, I don’t know how other Catholics in the Archdiocese judged Archbishop Burke.

The St. Louis Channel 4 website carried several caustic and nasty comments about Archbishop Burke. It was sad to read them.

From what I have read and heard about Archbishop Burke, he is a good and holy man and a fine shepherd for St. Louis. The people of St. Louis are fortunate to have him.

His title on this thread has been both 'Grace" and “Eminence”.
I thought “Eminence” was reserved for Cardinals?
I want to be sure I have his letter written correctly…right now I have ‘Your Grace’ in my opening…anyone know for sure?

JW,

Being from St. Louis I can tell you that we are truly blessed to have Archbishop Burke as our shepard! He is a very kind and compassionate man and does not deserve the verbal abuse that he is getting. BTW, where were all the cruel words to Sheryl Crow when she said to reduce global warming only use one sheet of toilet paper?

I digress. Archbishop Burke has come under attack more than once and has continued to stand strong and to not back down. Under the imense pressure, I am not sure how he does it.

Unfortunately, when Pope Benedict XVI was elected his memo stating “The Cafeteria is Closed” did not reach all parts of St. Louis. St. Louis has a large Catholic population, but unfortunately, not all stand for Holy Mother Church. Maybe they like the cafeteria that much?

Anyhow, there are many that support him and his leadership, I know that the letters sent to him mean a lot, having been a member of the “Defenders of Archbishop Burke” I recall emails stating his appreciation, so keep them coming.

God’s grace be with those that just don’t “get it.”
