St. Michael’s Catholic Hospital in Toronto Flying Gay Pride Flag in Lobby

December 9, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, a Catholic hospital, is flying the gay pride flag in its lobby, LifeSiteNews.com has discovered.
The Toronto Catholic hospital has a history of supporting the gay pride agenda. In 1999 it was revealed that the hospital was listed as a “bronze” level sponsor of Gay Pride Week in Toronto, having donated a significant sum of money to the event. The week’s activities included a homosexual men’s picnic at Toronto Island’s nude beach, and a “dyke striptease unlike any you’ve seen before,” amongst other similar events,

I read a similar story this year about a Catholic college here in America. Since this hospital is not in agreement with the Church, shouldn’t it follow that it can no longer call itself a Catholic hospital? Also, shouldn’t it change its name to something that is not associated with a Catholic saint? I believe that is what was proposed for the college…(unfortunately, I’m not certain of the name of the college or what ended up happening in that situation.)

I would hate to see one less Catholic hospital in the world, but that would be better than leading others into scandal.

Well - what you are suggesting would require a bishop with the backbone to force their hand on the issue, and I don’t honestly know if the bishop in Toronto does or not.

And honestly - if they get to the point where they are no longer really a Catholic hospital, they are so far gone that removing the name doesn’t really matter anyways.

Disgusting! Can’t the bishop do something about this?
Certainly he can. But remembering that Toronto, Canada, is a hotbed of liberal dissidents - the question isn’t whether he CAN do something, but whether he WILL do something. Sadly - I think the answer is pretty obvious - don’t hold your breath.

“q @SMC is a group formed for and by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer and questioning people and our heterosexual allies at St. Michael’s College.”

emphasis added. I wonder about all these “Awareness” campaigns".
Could they be possible recruitment tools?

Is Toronto the new San Francisco?

You folks are discovering this NOW???

It’s a well known fact that the queer community in Toronto, known as the Village, is the second largest in North America. San Fran. is the only one that trumps it.

As someone who’s lived in TO seeing the pride flag doesn’t surprise me, but seeing St Mike’s fly it does.

Archbishop Collins will more than likely take action against the hospital, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t.

Not to sound cynical, but I’m pretty sure all that Archbishop Collins can do is write them a strongly worded letter, to which they will more than likely just ignore.

 Frankly I dont understand,I hope the bishop reads this( If you are not against them then you must be for them? God said be ye not converted to this world nor the things of this world, who will stand up for me in the latter days? Are those who profess to of God afraid unto death? will we be able to stand? so stand, and stand for what is right! believe or leave.Thank you for your time in love of Christ not man Nancy.P.S. what happened to propersition *8?

The true church of Christ is not in a building it’s in your heart for God is a seeker of the heart. He’s coming back for all those who love his words and his son and your neighbor as your self. But correction comes to the pulpet first for he knows they have the athority and don’t use it correctly,so they will be judged more harshly for where more is given more is expected. Love Nancy:thumbsup:

In speaking with a Pro-life activist, he advised me that the Bishop can do more than just that. He could remove the Catholic designation from the hospital and limit the amount of funding it receives from Catholic sources.

There is a similar thread about another “Catholic” hospital in London, Ontario

Yeah and that is very sad. You would think that Pope Benedict would depose the liberal bishops and replace them with orthodox bishops who would do the right thing!

Actually - he does have the authority to strip them of their Catholic title. Also - if the hospital is run by a religious order - he can send that religious order packing from his diocese. I forget the specific documents that give him that authority, but I know he does have it. The only question is whether he is willing to go that far, if need be.

Well - as a buddy of mine who lives in Los Angeles has noted on more than one occasion - 75 can’t come soon enough!!! The last I knew - he was actually counting down the day’s till the good Cardinal’s 75th birthday.

Pope Benedict seems to be generally letting these guys quietly retire, but the men that are replacing them seem to be of a much more conservative trend.

Our bishop here retired a couple of years ago. He was pretty liberal - but not to the point of allowing the abuses that go on in a lot of places. The guy that replaced him has proven much more conservative. From everything I have seen - this is happening more and more across the board.

We’ve had our fun with our new bishop, too. He was a priest in the Washington, DC area, so he came to us from a part of the country that has more Catholics per square mile than we have in 5 counties. When he was in Washington, DC - he could easily drive from the chancery to anywhere in the archdiocese, have a meeting and be back at the chancery by close of business that day. In our diocese - he can’t make it from the chancery to the far end of the diocese and back in 8 hours - much less hold the meeting. It took him a while to realize he had a fully functional co-cathedral, second residence and the whole lot for a reason…😃

Well, let’s hope that Archbishop Collins does take action against the hospital. 👍

I agree with you Nancy but this flag should not be flying in a Catholic hospital.

Good! If they refuse to remove the flag then they should have their Catholic title removed.

Not always. If the hospital belongs to a religious congregation, the bishop probably has no jurisdiction. Most religious congregations are either male, in which case the Ordinary is their Major Superior or if they are female they are usually of Pontifical Right and their Ordinary is the Pope.

If the hospital is the property of the diocese, then the bishop has jurisdiction over the hospital, regardless of who runs it.

Also, many hospitals and universities are owned by non-profit corporations and run by religioius or Catholic lay people. Bishops have no legal authority over a non-profit corporation.

Take for example CAF. It is not a part of the Catholic Church. It is Catholic, but it is a non-profit corporation independent of the Church’'s legal authority. So is EWTN.

JR 🙂

I too hope our Archbishop takes whatever action he can about this. I lived in Edmonton while he was Archbishop there and moved to Toronto a couple of years before he did. I’ve never found him to liberal, in fact my experiences of him have been quite the opposite. I know he’s spoken out about other issues (like the Morgentaller Order of Canada). I love his homilies and when he visits a parish he always gives out his phone number at the end for any young men considering the priesthood. Oh, and he had (possibly still has) a cat named Frodo.
