St. Peter's struck by lightning after Pope Benedict's announcement!

Most importantly, official weather observations from CIAMPINO Ciampino, Rome, do indicate that there was a thunderstorm for approximately 3 hours in Rome yesterday…

What are the chances lightening will strike the top of St Peter’s during a 3 hour thunderstorm? Hmmm? :rolleyes:

All the superstitious speculation over signs and portents, by some people on the internet, just because of a lightening strike.
 
Just because we can explain the science of something does not mean it cannot have supernatural portent.

It is like when New York flooded and everything but a statue of Mary was destroyed. The people who say that that’s because it is not flammable it obviously would not burn are missing the message. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is a safe refuge in these dark times.

Are saying this is a sign from God?

God doesn’t play enigmatic games. If it is indeed of a message from God, as some people seem to be speculating, then God will make sure it is understood. This has been the case at Lourdes, Fatima, and with Our lady of Guadalupe (source: A Still Small Voice: A practical Guide to private revelations by Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR).

Assuming this is a sign… What is the message? (If you know what it is, then keep in mind it is a private revelation.)

In this case of the lightening bolt, most people are speculating about a message. Are they receiving a private revelation or are they just guessing? What if all of their interpretations are different? What if their initial interpretation changes after discussing it with others who seem to see a message? Are they all right, or are they all wrong?

And assuming this phenomena is preternatural, the event is supernatural in origin (meaning from God), and there is some sort of message… then…

Because of the possibility of deception or even of diabolical influence in paranormal phenomena, the Church has never used them in deciding the authenticity of a private revelation. This reluctance will seem incredible especially to those who have observed some of these phenomena (and I know many well balanced people who have). Just about every place I have visited or viewed on the internet this year (after coming extremely close in my relationship to Jesus, God, The Holy Spirit and in particular Our Lady Mother Mary, have seen fires and Lightning strikes at all places; including farmland recently purchased by my Son (a direct lightning hit on top of his hill causing a fire - the only one in the whole district) in addition to a Lightning strike within 100 yards of my vehicle in a paddock last week.

Yet, this is THE second Year I have been praying and communicating closely with Jesus and Our Lady Mary Mother of Jesus and given away all of my earthly goods and monies, donating heavily to Our Lady Mother Mary’s causes therefore it is not that God or Jesus are angry or upset with the people nearly struck (I was also nearly struck at Christmas time on a property with a Lightning hit near a tree feeding a horse). It is Jesus guiding people along to their next place of His Calling and showing His presence in relation to certain events surrounding the place and people where His Lightning strikes.

For the record, I did the OP because I thought it was an amusing coincidence, not because I think it’s some kind of omen. I don’t believe in signs and omens.

I don’t know what the message is, but I am pretty sure even a small child could tell that there is a message. Wouldn’t he, considering the pope’s announcement before this? Perhaps it is the start of a chastisement. Look at the times we are living in.

I heard that God punishes with war. Even though these can be explained naturally, they are portents. God can use natural signs to portray supernatural reality.

I think you are reading way too much into a natural occurrence. Why the delay of several hours? Why during a major lightning storm? etc., etc.,…

I am looking into it because I believe in sacraments–natural signs conveying supernatural reality. Look at the way the world is now, concerning the legitimization of homosexuality, abortion and euthanasia. People no longer believe in the precepts of religion which they claim to follow. They follow religion but deny it at the same time–if religion is inconvenient discard it. The purpose of life is no longer to live with God but to make a utopia on earth–and religion is the obstacle that must be discarded.

I would be quite surprised if chastisement is not on the way.

God does not punish us with war, war is a result of sin. I have a friend who studied at the Pontifical north american college, the NAC, st. peters and the nac are hit with lightening all the time!! The two tallest buildings in Rome.

Anything that flows naturally from something else requires God as a necessary component (upholder of the natural law). Hence, if sin naturally leads to death, then God in a way can properly be said to punish sin with death (or war) even if he is not a sufficient cause. By analogy, a judge (God) sentences a criminal (sinner). The punishment is brought about both by the judge’s actions (in upholding the law) as the criminal’s (in violating it).

As to the post, its just lightning striking one of the tallest buildings around. No big deal. It happens all the time.
 
I admit it. This coincidence struck me (heh).

However, I just don’t know what the message would be. That God didn’t want the Pope to resign? A warning to the Church about the future? Also, wasn’t there an apparatition that talked of a sign in the sky?
 
I think that a simpler and more childlike people would see it as a sign. It is a pretty significant coincidence, considering that it is the headquarters of God’s Church and God is not the deist God.

Adam probably desired greatly to live with God and did not see the world as pleasurable but a trial, a form of penance. As we have become more industrious and scientific we no longer have time for God. We keep ourselves busy by the clock, having no time for prayer, and working so that we might be famous or have success, keeping ourselves busy with pleasure; forgetting the truth that our final destiny is with God and not the world. In contrast to Adam modern man wants God to stay out, so he can have his utopia.

This is also natural, but I take it as a sign; is it a mere coincidence too?

St. Mark at the end of his Gospel quotes Jesus as saying that signs would follow believers, not that believers should chase after signs.
 
In itself its significant, I see no reason to speculate either way. It happened and was caught on film, within hours of the Popes resignation. What else needs to be said?

Psalm 29 “The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.”
