Is the Catholic Church, at least in the United States, becoming like the Congregationalists?
From what I can find out, the only churches in my Archdiocese that can have the Tridentine Mass are the parishes that the Archbishop has designated as “Tridentine” parishes. There are now Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean Catholic Churches in my diocese where none existed a few years ago. I read on these bulletin boards that if you don’t like the liturgy in your home parish, go shopping! since every church has it’s own litugy now. And today I read that a group of laity in Boston has brought a lawsuit against the diocese saying the parishes own the land and the church building, not the diocese. I have heard a rumor that some of the largest parishes in my Archdiocese now get to approve a new pastor before the Archbishop appoints him.
What has happened to us? Why do parishes need a full-time, paid Director of Liturgy? Time was the Bishop told the parishes what the liturgy was for the diocese and it was the same in every church.
In keeping with what I suppose is the “Spirit of Vatican II”, I have left my geographical parish for a Tridentine parish. It shouldn’t have to be that way, but it is for many of us.
