Do you stand or kneel once getting back to your seat after communion? I’m a member of the Cathedral here and we all kneel, but at another church, I go to often, everyone stands until the priest sits down. I’ve heard that the congregation stands at the end because we are supposed to be in union with one another. I prefer to kneel, I hope I’m not being selfish, I just prefer to be on my knees praying while I’m eating the last bits of the host.

I was reading some of the questions on EWTN a little bit ago and this is what prompted my question here:
Catholic Mass
Question from on 08-04-2005:
How come some local Bishopes Directed their own instruction to remain standing during the Holy Communion until the last person has received the Communion.

Fortunatly only some parishes have it and that is the most ridiculous practice. What is happening in our Catholic Churche. Do I have to go the Holy Father Benedivt XVI?

What you have is an over-zealous application of the norm.
In many places the priests are standing until the Eucharist is reposed after Communion. They then sit down. However, with respect to the laity, the Holy See has made clear that
they may kneel, sit or stand, after returning from Holy Communion. In other words, you need not imitate what the clergy are doing at that time.

** Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments**

Prot. n. 855/03/L

**Dubium**: In many places, the faithful are accustomed to kneeling or sitting in personal prayer upon returning to their places after individually received Holy Communion during Mass. Is it the intention of the Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia, to forbid this practice?

**Responsum**: Negative, et ad mentem. The mens is that that the prescription of the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani, no. 43, is intended, on one hand, to ensure within broad limits a certain uniformity of posture within the congregation for the various parts of the celebration of the Holy Mass, and on the other, to not regulate posture rigidly
in such a way that those who wish to kneel or sit would no longer be free.

I stand because the Bishop told our pastor we had to,though I’d rather kneel.I do it out of obedience.

I kneel until the blessed sacrament is no longer in view.

I kneel until the priest stands up and continues with the Mass.

I kneel until the Body of Christ is placed in the Tabernacle, and the Blood of Christ is consumed. Though our Bishop has ordered us to stand, I will continue to kneel before god.

It depends on what Liturgical Season we are in. From Easter Sunday until Pentecost I stand because we do not kneel from Easter until Pentecost.

At other times of the year, I kneel.

It also depends on where I am as I sometimes go to churches where there are no kneelers…

I kneel until the tabernacle is closed. I have heard until that it is proper to wait until the priest sits, but the two occur in close proximately, so I like to use the tabernacle so as to keep the focus on Jesus.

At one of our Catholic high school special-event masses in our Cathedral, I thought this was interesting to see:

The kids were all standing, like their religion class teacher told them to do (they were seated in a section by themselves).

Everyone else who went to communion was kneeling (the Catholic parents).

Everyone who stayed in the pews at communion was sitting (the Protestant parents).

I kneel and try to wrap my head around the fact that my God and Savior is really, truly and substantially present in me. Even if only for 10-15 minutes. Its a time for asking Jesus to transform us from our sinful selves, for asking for those petitions closest to our hearts. And just basically thank him for dying for us! 👍

And at His True Presence, protstration? That would be sooo cool… 👍

Well, since I’m in the choir I stand after I receive (if I’m singing).

If I’m playing guitar, I sit. 😃

I kneel and wait to sit until the officiant sits down, or until a deacon has finished the liturgy of the eucharist… and then its the doxology.

My family kneels even in a church where everyone else stands. We know we are in union with each other just by receiveing Holy Communion.

I kneel until the celebrant sits after the purification of the vessels. One exception is when I’m in the front row where I might be obstructing people trying to pass between me and the person with the Cup; I will usually then sit so I’m not in the way.

Everyone in my church kneels, but I sit, because I can’t kneel (medical problems 😦 ).

See, I can kneel, but I can’t stand in one spot for long periods of time without killing my back, so I would have to sit. Do you think a bishop or priest would permit me to pace? I’d at least be upright!
