Just found out that my daughter’s first movie is going to be Star Trek Beyond. Local theater has a day and evening “baby’s day out” and “baby’s night out” movie where parents are invited to bring their infants and toddlers out to the movie. Crying, diaper changing, etc… are all allowed. And next week’s movie is Star Trek!

Went to her first mass last week, now she gets to go to her first movie next week. I have to say as a parent I’m loving the long list of firsts she gets to work through both with us and on her own over the coming years.

I would not take your daughter to see Star Trek Beyond as her first movie. There are some scary scenes for a young child.

My daughter was scared to death when my FIL and SIL took here to see the cartoon movie Zootopia and had to leave the theater, and she was 5. My FIL was upset because he spent over $60 for tickets, popcorn, drinks, etc for just the trailers and 10 minutes of the Cartoon movie

Good luck and God Bless

My daughter is too young to have any clue what is actually happening on screen, or even to watch the movie. She wouldn’t understand Mr. Rodgers at this point so it’s kind of a moot point 😉

I’ve been liking the reboot movies so far but I wish they hadn’t done this.
It’s a sad commentary of our times. most TV shows these days have a gay character.
It’s wouldn’t be a Hollywood movie now days if they didn’t have a gay or transgender person somewhere. To be honest taking aside the moral issue it’s just old. Way over done.

It’s propaganda, relying on the idea that our instinctive selves can’t distinguish between fiction and reality, to make everyone who watches TV or goes to the movies feel like they “know” someone who is homosexual, even though in real life the chances of such an encounter are quite small.

Well in this case it wasn’t really a calculated propaganda move. Their stated reasoning was to honor George Takei, who has been Mr. Sulu for 50 years, and who happens to be gay. Even though George actually didn’t want them to honor him in that manner. And it ended up being a split second gesture that hardly seems worth getting worked up over anyway.

Pushing the gay agenda is exactly what their at!!
Well, it does seem (from a completely unscientific point of view) that the acting profession has a much greater percentage of Gay men in it than is in the general population. Nor is this a recent development. That said, it does make sense that once it is no longer taboo to be homosexual, that those sorts of characters show up in greater numbers in TV shows, plays, and movies.

Hmmm, as I was writing this, I had a thought – perhaps they gravitate to the acting profession because (historically) they’ve had to act in their public life. Now that it is no longer considered something to hide, will they no longer have that second acting career to help them into a professional acting job?

They didn’t really push anything. The partner is seen for a grand total of like 5 seconds. It’s never discussed on screen nor do we even hear the partner’s name or hear him speak. In fact if they hadn’t mentioned Sulu being gay prior to the movie’s release it wouldn’t have even been clear they were partners for what it’s worth. 🤷

Frankly if they were going to show Sulu as gay they really couldn’t have been any less obvious about it.

Seasons 1 and 2 for Enterprise are ok. They’re about on par with most of Voyager and TNG. They’re each “alien of the week” episodes and there’s not a lot of continuity you need to keep track of. However, Star Trek: Enterprise is a lot better. The entirety of season 3 is a single story that I think is really good. Season 4 is also really good in that it’s a collection of smaller stories. There are a lot of 2 and 3 episode story arcs that do a lot to develop the Star Trek universe. DS9 is my favorite Trek series, but seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise is my second favorite.
Probably DS9 is my favorite but ST: Enterprise is the real inheritor of TOS. It does bug me that Earth is the founder of the Federation. Given the number of civilized races and the dangers of travel there should already be something like the Federation with Earth being considered for membership.
I don’t think it’s clear at all that Earth in DS9 doesn’t have religion.
As far as I can recall none of the characters in any of the Star Treks is portrayed as believing in any Earth religion. Maybe nobody religious was admitted to Starfleet Academy?

Isn’t Chakotay portrayed as having Native Central American spiritual beliefs? He graduated from Starfleet Academy, although I don’t know if he had these beliefs when he was admitted. Interestingly, his entry into the academy was sponsored by Captain Sulu.

Forgot about that, but still, he isn’t from Earth. He learned from his grandfather on a planet given to Native Americans (a great big reservation?)

True he was from a Federation Colony established by people from Earth, but his tribe still had ties to Earth. I believe there was an episode where he and his father went on a quest to meet fellow descendants of the Rubber Tree People who worshiped the “Sky Spirits”. So their religion did have a component that was shown to still exist on Earth in universe in 2344 as I recall.

Speaking of religion in Trek, I just remembered that there were at least two other instances of religion playing into Voyager. Neelix’s beliefs were explored quite vividly in the episode where he was actually dead for 17 hours before being brought back by Borg ingenuity. And Janeway’s beliefs were somewhat touched on in the episode Coda. Though her belief was more that she didn’t have any belief but science in life but didn’t discount the idea of an afterlife.

There was also Earth religions in TOS quite a few times. The most obvious being in my favorite episode “Balance of Terror”, where there’s a wedding at the beginning in the ship’s chapel. The chapel contained religious symbols from many religions including a cross. And indeed the newly married widow at the end prays in the chapel at the end of the episode. Other instances included a clearly Hindi crewmember with a Bindi in “That Which Survives.” And I believe Psalm 95 is referenced in “The Empath”. And the episode “Bread and Circuses” actually mentions the Son of God while the crew are on a parallel developed Earth where Rome still existed at a 20th century level of development.

TNG had a few references to human Religion… Data references Hinduism in at least one episode indicated it survives in universe to the 24th century. And one episode “Sub Rosa” showed a church with cemetery on a Federation Colony. During the funeral in that episode you can even hear the funeral attendees say “Amen” at one point.

DS9, in addition to the Bajoran religion which was central to the show, Capt Sisko’s dad actually quotes from the Bible in “Far Beyond the Stars”. And his fiance Cassidy actually says she’s like a priest to perform their wedding (and she’s not referencing Bajoran priests in this instance).

Enterprise probably had the most obvious references to human religion however. Dr. Phlox mentions he had studied at a Tibetan monastery and that he’d attended mass in St. Peter’s Square. Which means that the Vatican survives in universe until at least the 2150’s.

So it seems that into the Star Trek era that Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Native American Religions all survive in some form.

Minister, actually, not priest. There’s a deleted scene in the following episode that makes it clear that Kasidy has her own beliefs–and while it’s not explicitly stated, I’d say they could be inferred to be Christian.

True … but notice how few of your examples come from TNG, especially early TNG. Gene Roddenberry wanted a post-religious humanity, but it’s hard to prove a negative, and when he’s more constrained (TOS) or no longer present (all other series), it starts slipping back in.

True, and while I give all credit to Gene for creating Star Trek, by the time of TNG’s early years he’d kinda become a bad producer. Which is why he was stripped of the role after how poor the first couple seasons of TNG were. And given how bad they were they’re easily ignored other than the one or two highlight episodes like Q-Who?

Sadly no. Slash has been around for years and isn’t going anywhere. Nor is it limited to Star Trek. You can find fan fiction slash for just about any character pairing from almost every pop culture property out there. I have an acquaintance who loves writing that garbage. Irony being she’s also an amateur Christian apologist and evangelical pastor’s daughter 🤷.
Well, some people are of the opinion that it ain’t porn if it doesn’t involve pictures.

Oh, goody! CBS is launching a new Trek, ST: Discovery. Since the Discovery’s number is NCC-1031 it’s obviously after ST: Enterprise but before TOS.

I usually watch shows online but I think CBS has a paywall so I’ll have to watch a show when it’s on at the scheduled time for once.

I think I would rather see the new series be set in the late 2300s or later.
