“City on the Edge of Forever.” Yes that is surely one of the finest episodes of the series.
Also my favorite, and I think critically acclaimed as the best episode of the series. Have to think of my least favorite, though…

It is true that in the real universe if life evolved on numerous worlds the odds are against every world following earth’s blueprint. Why have just two arms and legs for example? Why not have aliens that are round and have eight legs (i.e. like arachnids)?
When one considers that it was only by accident (an asteroid?) that mammals, and, therefore, humans, became the primary beings on planet earth, wouldn’t aliens look more like dinosaurs, assuming similar evolutionary patterns? The odds of life on other planets looking exactly like us is, well…astronomical. 🙂

There was one episode of ST:TNG that I really loved: *The Inner Light *. Picard lives another life on a planet whose sun is going to nova. Excellent story, and very sad.

Thinking of Spock quotes, my fav is: “If you eliminate the impossilbe, whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth.” It’s the first law of investigative detection. He gave credit to his “ancestor” for it, but of course, it was written by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle as Sherlock Holmes’ first principle. Both the Spock of the original series and of the reboot quoted it.

A couple other enjoyable episodes come to mind, both which borrow on the idea of parallel Earths (in different ways): “Bread and Circuses”, where they visit a planet where the Roman Empire never fell, and the “sun worshippers” turn out to be “Son worshippers”, i.e. Christians. Then in the more comedic vein was “A Piece of the Action”, where they visit a planet that has modeled itself on prohibition-era Chicago gangsters, based on a book left behind by a previous starship. It features Kirk driving a motor car, and making up a wacky card game, and Scotty trying his hand at mobster slang, among other things.

Do you have a favorite episode of Star Trek? A least favorite? Which ones and why?
Favorite would be really hard to say. “The Trouble with Tribbles” and “A Piece of the Action” are a lot of fun, as far as comedy goes. “City on the Edge of Forever” is hard to beat on the more dramatic end. Honestly, there are too many good ones to list.

Least favorite is either “The Paradise Syndrome” or “Turnabout Intruder”. The former is impossible to enjoy even in a “so bad it’s good” way, what with Kirk thinking he’s some kind of space Native American. But the worst part is that he’s down there for months. He gets married, his wife gets pregnant, but both wife and child end up dead, and this doesn’t affect him at all. I mean, I know he’s had a lot of love interests, but you’d think watching your wife die would merit some kind of reaction. Nope. He remembers that he’s actually not a Native America from space, and that’s pretty much it. 🤷

“Turnabout Intruder” doesn’t make any sense, and the moral appears to be “women can’t be captains because they’re too emotional”. :ehh:

On top of all that you said, Kirk believes he’s a weather god who can control the weather. Cliche much?

I think “The Paradise Syndrome” should be the new “Spock’s Brain”!

My favorite episode is the one in which Capt. Kirk, Spock et al go back in time and Kirk falls in love with a woman who he finds out must be allowed to die because the world will suffer later on if she continues to live. IOW her death in a school fire must not be altered by Kirk. I don’t recall the name of the episode but I remember Joan Collins plays Kirk’s love interest. This one is my favorite since the plot reminds me of a good Twilight Zone episode.
This was my favorite, too! I loved the part where Kirk explained Spock’s ears were pointed because he got them caught in a Chinese mechanical rice picker. That appealed to my 14 year old sense of humor. And still makes me laugh at 60!

I agree, it does remind me a bit of Twilight Zone!

My favorite is The Trouble with Tribbles, and even to this day I still remember how many tribbles Spock estimated were in the storage compartment: 1,771,561.

I remember, too, the very first time I saw Star Trek, although I don’t remember what episode it was. I was intrigued by the transporter and remember asking my Mom what in the world that was. Later I learned that Roddenberry came up with the idea in order to save the expense of showing a ship landing on a planet. But then he realized he had a problem: all Kirk had to do when he got into a dangerous situation was whip out his communicator and say “Beam me up, Scotty!” (Yes, I know he never actually said that.) So week after week the writers had to come up with a reason why Kirk couldn’t do that, like gettting beaned on the head and having his communicator taken away.

Ok here is a test.

What was the episode, I don’t recall if it was The Next Generation of original series, in which the Enterprise encounters a superior intelligence that looks like the face of a cat on an intersteller cloud?

It doesn’t sound familiar - so I don’t think it’s in the original series.

There was a NG episode in which a super intelligent being who looks something like your description ran experiments on the crew, killing a couple of them. I didn’t think the face looked like a cat, more demonic tha cat-like, but that may be the episode you mean. The episode was called: “Where Silence Has Lease” Stardate: 42193.6. “The crew is held hostage in a mysterious void by a being who wishes to observe the many ways in which humans die.”

That is it. And you are right about it looking more like a demon than a cat.
