We have Lucille Ball to thank. She OK’d TOS to go ahead at Desilu Studios with sort of an “Ah what the heck, give it a try” sort of thing.

There was one other show she OK’d that went on to be successful as well, but I don’t remember what it was.
 
Worst villian: The Ferengi. In the TNG premier “Encounter at Farpoint Station”, they were presented as the most mysterious, feared race barely know to the Federation. Then when they finally showed up… it was like Mr. Haney from Green Acres. Huh?

It’s a fan effort, producing new shows covering the last 2 years of the Enterprise’s original 5-year mission with Kirk, Spock, & McCoy.

Their first episode, “In Harm’s Way” (see the right column of the home page) is a sequel to “Doomsday Machine” featuring a cameo by William Windom himself as Comm. Decker, and a return to the Guardian of Forever (from “City at the Edge of Forever”).

Yeah, the Ferengi were very inept as villains, although I do like the way they were later handled in Deep Space Nine, more as comic relief, extremist capitalist aliens. I think the producers wanted to initially get away from the old villains: the Klingons and the Romulans. The Ferengi flopped as a threat, but then the Borg came into the picture. :cool:

Of course, Deep Space Nine introduced an even more menacing threat: the Dominion.

Picard painted, studied archaeology, played music, rode horses, acted in plays…surprised he didn’t have a ponytail and wear patchouli. He was too much of an anti-Kirk for my taste. I saw him as more of a Captain Stubing on a heavily-armed Love Boat than a kick-butt Starfleet captain.

Riker kind of bugged me because he reminded me of a lot of officers I used to know. Overall, his character was judgemental, nasty to subordinates he didn’t approve of and a bit of a suck-up to the Captain.

Deanna: "I sense no deception in these Ferengi, who I can’t read anyway, but I forgot that. Now look at my cleavage."
Wesley was a whiney pain. I have never liked the juvenile add-ons to various TV series. He was the Trek equivalent of Scrappy-Doo.

On Voyager, I liked the Doctor because he was entertainingly annoying, like Q or Harry Mudd.

I liked Seven because I am a straight male.

She had more problems than any of the current generation Captains had to face. With 70 000 light years from the Federation, she was on her own.

Consider the Borg, the fact is, the Voyager crew, faced off with them, 9 times and never got FULL asimilated. Can any other captain say that?

She exuded maternal warmth to her crew when appropriate, plus strong fortitude in dealing with problems and her enemies.

I just wished they didn’t make her an Admiral (loses her ship as a result) and lose command of Voyager, should there be a Star Trek movie in the future with the Voyager crew.

Sisko was by far the worst. Yes, racism is a terrible thing, but it’s been 300 years for pete’s sake.

Naw, I liked Sisko. Especially when he went back to his “Hawk” look.

I found Janeway’s voice mildly annoying.

I’d put the captains in descending order:

Kirk (natch)
Archer
Sisko
Janeway/Picard (tie)

Given the number of times Kirk got his shirt ripped, Garak couldf have had a very lucrative business on the Enterprise.

Absolutely cannot stand the Ferengi. Gross Gross Gross. A toothbrush and a little dental floss would help, but their personalities are equally repugnant.

On Q: One of my favorite lines is when he appears on the bridge and says, "I’m looking for a Mr. Jeen Luck Pickerd ??

I loved Sisko!! He seemed very human and I, too, loved his “Hawk” look andthe fact he loved baseball:thumbsup:

Janeway reminded me many ways (including her voice) of one of my favorite actresses, Kathryn Hepburn, and I guess she was a fan, too

I also am a Picard fan (maybe it’s just his voice :love: ) especially his intellectualism, and, I’ll admit, I can really relate to his discomfort with children:o !**
 
I’m surprised that no one’s mentioned, IMO, the raison d’etre of Trek: The Mirror Universe. 😃

Q is one of my all-time favorite recurring characters. He features in several books as well as a production that DeLancey did with Leonard Nimoy called Spock vs. Q. Spock, of course, won.

I never watched that much of this show it seems that the ones I did see. Some aliens were always taking over bridge.

I thought Kirk wouldn’t put up with that he’d would blow up ship.

Of course the problem with the TNG and subsequent series was the dependence on technobabble.

And the fact that almost every problem would be solved by emitting the Particle of the Week through the main deflector array.

Of course, sometimes the physics would go completely off the rails. There was an episode where the *Enterprise *collided with the USS *Bozeman *(and blew up) near a temporal anomaly, where it got sent back in time a day or two to repeat those events over and over (fly in, collide, blow up, go back to start, do not collect $200).

The headaches and (un-)reality of time-travel aside…the episode led us to believe that a Galaxy-class starship’s tractor beam is not enough to deflect another starship (plausible, I guess); but popping open the shuttle bay doors would provide enough thrust through “decompression” to move an umpteen-ton starship out of the way? :eek: :rolleyes:

It was the 23rd century version of Superman. You know what I mean: bullets bounced off his chest and he didn’t blink; throw the empty gun at him and he’d duck. (Ha! Two for flinching! Thump thump!)
