Starbucks and Joni Mitchell's anti-Catholic song

She was “old” when I was in high school, and I’m 50.

She doesn’t have any idea what she’s talking about in her song “Shine” and I don’t think normal folk do, either.

Perhaps we could pave Paradise and put in a Starbuck’s- or pave Starbuck’s and put in a Paradise (old song, only people of a certain age will get it).

I think you’re mischaracterizing this: according to the article, Starbucks matches employee contributions to “charities such as Planned Parenthood” – which says, to me, that Starbucks matches employee contributions to charities without regard to what the charity is.

Still, I have to admit I’m troubled…

😛 I didn’t know there is a “no-no list.” Sounds like something for 4-year-olds. What are you talking about?
 
rlg…on a Starbucks thread…a while back…a poster said she had a list of businesses, products, services that Catholics should not support. And those who are unable to think for themselves were more than eager to get that list. I don’t recall that it was ever posted in a link…but I think some other businesses were listed…for everyones FYI.

Oh…okay. I hate those kind of lists. I will still continue to go to Starbucks (though I certainly won’t buy any Joni Mitchell CDs…never have…never will). I agree with you that the thread is silly. I like music. Am I supposed to avoid any music store or site that offers Joni Mitchell? That would severely hamper my ability to purchase music. 😛

I didn’t catch that wording…that wasn’t a nice thing to say. 😦 While I don’t necessarily heed those lists (I’m not a big boycotter), I do go through those lists. I am more of a “reverse boycotter.” If I know of a Catholic-owned business, or one whose owners/management are very pro-life, I will choose to buy from them.
 
I don’t get how this is worthy of news or offense. So an artist makes a statement from the heart. Its whats in her heart. Isn’t that what they do? I wonder why but at the same time am shocked that anyone would be suprised at a marketing ploy with-in a capitalist economy. We could help most by praying from the heart for her intention and conversion.

so Nordar…there you go. You can print them out for your reference. If you laminate the list it will last longer.😉
 
I’m not ever surprised to see what Starbucks promotes. At least not since I recently learned the logo they used back in the 70’s and again in 1987-1992 is a PG version of an X rated Nordic Siren.

Of course, it’s the same logo today, but it’s a close up of her face, instead of her legs spread wide open.

I guess the argument could be made that they just wanted a nautical theme…
 
Well reading this whole thread has been rather interesting. I used to pray a LOT for Joni Mitchell as I used to listen to her albums back in the 70’s and 80’s. It was then that I decided she was a fallen away Catholic. I don’t know if that is true, but it seemed like she knew a little more about the religion than if a person wasn’t ever Catholic. I think she lives in the L.A. area and they are having BIG ISSUES with $ and paying off all of these folks with priest-scandal-issues. It seems she is jumping on the wagon with everyone else who is bitter about something in the church. I don’t know.

But I stopped buying her music when she started doing everything herself on the recordings. I know that is cheaper to do, rather than paying musicians, but the drum machine doesn’t do it for me. I can’t stand the drum machine. I would much prefer hearing a real drummer. I guess it’s just too expensive.

No problem for me. I hate coffee and I gave up on Joni Mitchell long ago.

I don’t pay any attention to those lists either, but to denigrate people who do is childish. I don’t even like starbucks I never go their don’t like there coffee. I pretty much do the same as you, If I know it is Catholic owned I will go there. I just have a hard time with the sarcasm that is posted on this board sometimes it is uncalled for.🤷
 
Don’t know why, but this discussion brings to mind a recording many years ago that some people boycotted for being “too pro-life”. It was called, “Having My Baby”, and I don’t think it was used to sell coffee or anything else.
I wonder if Starbucks will match employee contributions to Catholic Charities, the Red Cross, the Boy Scouts, etc.
No matter, I still don’t like coffee from Starbucks.

Yep. It is the “anyone who disagrees with me is a mindless idiot” strategy - not a very charitable way to go. 😦

We all may be tempted to use such wording from time-to-time, but it is important to remember that we are all struggling here on earth. Just because someone comes to an erroneous conclusion (in our opinion or clearly from a Catholic standpoint), doesn’t mean they are not thinking.
