Sobering stats about Malawi:

Average life span for a male 41 years.
Rate of male literacy: 70%
Infant Mortality: 146 per 1000 births, 14%.

It’s definitely a dilemma. People are yaking about how the child will be raised. But I don’t think anyone wants to see him thrown into that kind of a life if he has a way out either. I can understand the reasons for thinking he should stay in his home country, but people should think twice, or at least once, before they spout off all reactionary. The boy has been given a chance at a life where every day will not be a fight for survival just getting to the market. Consider that.

I think what is frustrating about this situation is that here you have a dad who appears to want his son. He only took him to the orphanage because he was poor and didn’t feel he could properly care for him. I am sure that the dad is willingly giving up his son for adoption because he believes that it will result in a better life for the son. However, since the dad appears to care for his son and has expressed a desire to be reunited with him, wouldn’t it have been nice for Madonna to help the dad get on his feet so his family could be reunited? I think that would be the more noble thing to do.
But it wouldn’t have garnered her a lot of attention and raised her status in the eyes of a lot of people who should know better, especially after all the publicity stunts she’s committed oover the years. You can say all you want about how a little boy in a poor country was given a chance at a better life but I won’t believe it. Of course Madonna could have helped the father out - giving him enough money to get him back on his feet in that country would be a drop in the bucket to her, but that’s not what she was after. She is perhaps the most selfish and self-absorbed of the whole bunch of selfish and self-absorbed people in entertainment, and now she’s using a poor African child to make herself look good. How absolutely, utterly despicable.

So that makes it all okay, using a human being as a tool in a publicity stunt? It certainly does not. Nothing merits using a human being as an object for one’s own selfish purposes.

It seems like there might be the presumption here that this baby will be naturally better off being a pampered son of an self indulgent star than to stay in a poor country, where his humble Christian father hopes to raise in to love Jesus. I wonder if there’s maybe some underlying racism too?

There are plenty of true orphans in Africa. It’s odd that Madonna didn’t pick a child that had no mother OR father. Also, I think our Church teaches that the poor have as much dignity and worth as the rich. Somehow it seems like Madonna made these people feel insulted and offended. I think she was insensitive.
:amen:

Sorry to go on like this, but I just dislike Madonna so much… I’m done now!

I agree that since this boy had a father, giving the father the money needed to support his son would have been the better option, IMO. There are other children who truly have no one. This boy had a father, he was just too poor. BTW, since adoption is anomaly in Malawi, people are too poor to do so, there ARE no laws. They’re kind of making them up as they go along, I believe.

Perhaps Madge should have kept some of the reported 11 babies she aborted.
