“Crisis” magazine has an interesting article this monthy on the state of the church diocese by diocese. It is quite interesting. It was based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, increase in active priests; most ordinations; most adult receptions. The top rated diocese was the Diocese of Knoxville, TN. The article is by Rev. Rodger Hunter-Hall, former assistant editor of the magazine, and Steven Wagner, President of QEV Analytics, an opinion research firm.

Thanks for posting this, it is very interesting. However, I do notice one mistake in the article. It says that there were no ordinations in the Galveston-Houston diocese in 2005, but that is incorrect. I only know this because I was there. My friend was ordained; he was the only one though.

Thank you very much for the link! I hope this gets more discussion.

Sadly my Diocese (Rockville Centre, NY) is at the bottom. Hopefully the changes the Bishop has implemented will have a positive effect.

One statistics that I think they should have taken in to consideration is the rate of Mass attendance in each dioceses. I think this is a critical statistic even though it is only assessed once a year.

Are the links actually working for some of you? I get a blank Crisis Magazine page with the date of June 19, 2006. I went to the home page and clicked on the article, but it links to the same bogus page. Too bad, because I would really like to know what it says…

I think it opens in a pdf file. Do you have Adobe Acrobat installed?

Yep. The full version of Acrobat and the latest version of Windows XP.

I just tried it on my Apple, as well - same screen, so it isn’t a Windows-only problem.

Are you saying the link works for you?

I tried opening it the first time, but it didn’t work. Then it worked when I tried a second time.

My diocese, Albany, NY ranks near the bottom.
Then I noticed the article say size has a negative impact. According to the author, “as size increases, vitality deteriorates”. Albany has a Catholic population of 400K. Hmmm . . .

Which probably explains the number of archdiocese in the lower half…

Kalamazoo, MI is a fairly small diocese on Lake Michigan, and they are near the top.

My diocese (Metuchen) ranks near the bottom (#173)… 😦

Perhaps it is time to divide the Northeast dioceses up into much smaller ones so that the bishops can have an easier time ministering to their flocks.

And maybe a little more orthodoxy wouldn’t hurt either.😉

Yes, mine (Burlington, VT) looks pretty low now, but the stats were 2005. I can tell you that there have been some pretty major changes in the last 2 years, changes for the better, wonderful changes from our Bishop Matano (God bless him!). Burlington is small enough to change as much for the positive as it had for the negative.

WOW! It’s shocking that my diocese, the Diocese of San Bernardino, Ca. has almost 13,500 faithful adherents per priest.

Let us pray…

0 Jesus, Good and Gentle Shepherd, grant that the men and women from our community may have the grace and the courage to hear and answer Your call to priesthood and religious life. Give them the wisdom to realize that life is a gift. Let them realize their life is part of YOUR plan. Call forth those You have chosen to spread the gospel message, and help them to freely respond to a life of service in the Church. May the parents and families of our parish, and all parishes, support and encourage our young men and women to search for, follow, and answer the call of God in their lives. AMEN
