How are they? You will have to be strong for all of you regardless how you feel. Find the strength in the Word of God. In times like these, I would read the bible and find a passage that can console me and offer peace and calm. Also, talk to your children and be honest, remember to offer a smile even though you don’t feel it. They need to see that through this there is hope because we belong to God.

God Bless.
They seem ok. We still do stuff together. My daughter still has soccer games. The two oldest still have band on Mondays. This Saturday my oldest has to retake his driving test so I’m going to spend most of the day with him practicing. I have a meeting the day after labor day to get my lawyer started on my case. 1650 dollars is going to be painful until I can secure a loan. I think I can swing it before the money will be needed for bills. I’m sure God will take care if me regardless of I can afford this.

This is my favourite bible quote, from Ephesians. I thought you could draw strength from it:

The Armor of God
*Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.*

I guess mediation was not an option or do you always need a lawyer for these things. I am assuming your are not signing the divorce papers but safeguarding your belongings so to speak? Keep busy and take care of yourself, be good to yourself. God will take care of you. I like to listen to faith filled music to keep the bad thoughts away and inspire hope in me. God bless.

Sorry to drop that little line in their without explaining. A mediator is not off the table. I have found a brother in Christ and ally to my marriage. The goal is still to save the marriage.

Mavdragon, we seem to fall in the same bracket; we will not give up. I fight battles everyday whether it is external or internal. Sometimes the waters are smooth and other times it is rough that I fear drowning in my pain and afflictions. Just trust Jesus, do what the Holy Spirit guides you to do and enjoy your life with your children. Show them that happiness is being one with God and doing His will.

Your problem lies with your wife and mine with my eldest child. It hurts but persevere in prayer and trust Jesus. 👍:gopray2:

Sorry I lost internet last night or would have weighed in.

Separation agreements normally are the first step in the divorce process where minor children and property is an issue. Do not respond to anything without letting a lawyer review it.

Remember, you must separate the Divorce from saving your marriage. Divorce is all business. I have seen too many good men “do the right thing” and end up funding the exwife and her shack up honey… I want you save your marriage. Pray that will happen. BUT you need to accept your wife’s words about no chance when it comes to dividing up stuff.

IF the separation agreement is just the first step in the process you will get a court date where the judge approves it… if that is planned then forget it being a Separation. All it takes is for HER to keep the process going. YOU can do nothing to stop her. It takes one to divorce… just her. You have no rights and no grounds to make her stay in a government marriage. Anything you agree to in the separation agreement will be what the judge thinks is fair for the final settlement. You give her the house? she gets the house… wouldn’t want the kids upset… visitation every other weekend??? Judge will make you prove why it needs to be increased… it has been fine for the separation… you agreed to it…

THIS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT IS CRITICAL… NO MATTER WHAT YOUR HEART SAYS… DO NOT agree to pay for anything …college, insurance etc after the kids turn 18. State only cares about support until 18. ANY AGREEMENT YOU MAKE OUTSIDE OF THE STATE REQUIREMENTS CAN’T BE CHANGED OR IN MY STATE, EVEN IMPACTED BY A BANKRUPTCY. IF SAY, YOU LOSE YOUR JOB AND CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY FOR COLLEGE… TOUGH LUCK… YOU SAID YOU WOULD YOU HAVE TO PAY. This is why a lawyer is critical … nothing good can happen by you trying to do this on your own… anything you give her is a legal document… you can’t change it later. I paid/am paying for all my kids college… I explained to them why it was not in the agreement. Your kids do not want you bankrupt and on the street (if not in jail for contempt) so they get college paid for… Your exwife? she may enjoy it. the agreement is with her… once signed it can only be changed if she approves changing it voluntarily.

Tell you wife that you are letting the lawyer handle the divorce so everything comes through him. Her lawyer is telling her the same… but also telling her to get what she can from you before you get a lawyer… any mistake you make in paper work in their favor will not be changed… You gave it to them. Sucks but make the divorce a separate business deal. Best way to do things like the house are to set a price that is fair and say whoever gets the house pays the other person $$$$ by this date. You have lived in the house so should be no issue staying there… may have to give the wife the master… i was in the house with wife almost all of the time. If you say you will leave then count on staying out. Stay out while your wife “tries to sell it…” Did she really clean it up? did she leave? She has absolutely no incentive to sell the house… you normally do not get your part until the house sale goes through. I have seen that go 2 1/2 years… mortgage you pay part of and you pay for where you stay. If you have a room in the basement or guest room stay there. If she doesn’t want to move she can delay the sale for years. Hard to catch someone turning down appointments or leaving it messy.

You are not the first to go through this. read what others have had happen at men’s divorce. check out lawyer websites… get a lawyer. This divorce is going to cost you serious money… $20,000 is not a crazy figure. every document you send her lawyer reads and gives advice on. court is by hour… You can’t save anything by doing it yourself… The other lawyer works only for her. Mediators goal is to get agreement but by 5pm so they can go home… I was told lies by ours then at 5:15 she tells me my exwife didn’t say the negative stuff and even defended me to her lawyers after they said it… she was the best in the city… she knew this but held it back hoping I would crack. I ended up with a house I didn’t want that allowed me to get120,000 equity vs her offer of 40,000 (she took the 40,000 out of my retirement… 15 years away… But it was her offer… I just said I would take it for that agreement… and she couldn’t change her mind and want more… Business deal… She will not control the process… her lawyers will. It is their reputation they care about… not your relationship with your exwife… cold but true. No lawyer wants the rep of settling for a deal that hurt their client…

see next post for more too long…

Separate issue… prayer is key. St Joseph is an excellent choice… imagine how he felt when Mary told him she was with child… before the dream…? dang… remember he had hours to think about it before the truth was revealed. His friends and parents… No dream for them (or Mary’s parents for that matter). He knew what it was like to be facing divorce. His head was in that place before the dream. God will not impose His will on your wife due to free will. The Holy Spirit on the other hand can and does impact pressure points to try and change her free will. Sometimes it is a little voice others it is a two by four to the head. Ask Him to do whatever it takes to save your marriage. If that means changing you change. No excuses…NONE. This is not a normal situation. If you are not committed (the egg is committed not the chicken) then why should they act on your behalf. Mary can also impact her with her prayers. Pray often. Trust in God. If this is not to be a marriage that is restored there is a reason. As others have said about suffering it is for a reason. I also add to their comments - sometimes it is not about you… it is about people watching you… do you run from God or to him in times of trouble? I also pray that we do get credit for some of this suffering off time in purgatory. This process is going to take a year or so. Use it to demonstrate to your wife you have changed. Forget what she needs to do… she does not need to do anything for you… it also does not matter what you think she needs to change… until you are perfect and changed… Did you read this: alturtle.com/archives/1326 what to do when they leave… starts with this…

GIVE UP ALL SIGNS OF PUSHING.

This is very important. Your partner is already moving away. Anything you do to push them will tend to make them move away faster and further. Stop anything that might be construed as pursuing or pressing them. If your instinct is to call them twice a day, start calling them once a week. If your instinct is to send them a gift, do it once a month. If you are trying to find out what they are doing by asking other people, don’t. Leave them alone – a lot, but not completely. (I do not recommend “no contact.” (See my article When to Fold 'Em.) Let your partner contact you when they are ready. (See Reliable Membership Article.)

read it now… then read the comments on the pdf’s from others who were where you are… valuable info. Take advantage of it… no need to learn everything by experience.

Get to Mass as often as possible… confession as needed… talk to God… let him see the tears, the frustration (always remember He is God so be respectful) - God , I don’t understand… what am I suppose to do… Stuff like that.

He has seen you work… He has put a person locally in your life at just the right time. Thank him. Keep him in discussion.with you. Worst thing that can happen by doing this is he grants you peace (all we are promised here… not happiness) here and then rewards in Heaven. God is always good… we just don’t see the entire picture. Trust… but verify (divorce is business… be fair but not unfair to yourself. What you do not have will not be able to be shared with them…get your fair share, for them) Pray, reach out to others. Listen… listen more… Get a lawyer… let them handle the divorce… you focus on the reconciliation. Know you have many praying for you and your kids. May the Peace of Christ be with you my friend… it is OK to let Him carry you, just know it may feel like you are being dragged sometimes… that is OK… He has not left you. Do not leave him.

As another post already said, you have no choice now but to hire a lawyer. A suit for divorce has been filed against you in court, and if you fail to respond (or do so in a way that’s not legally adequate), you may well have forfeited your right to have any say in the matter. The lawyer will know how to respond – it’s “boilerplate” to him, but it will stop the legal proceedings for now, buying you time if nothing else. But the clock is ticking . . . turn the papers over to him or her immediately!

Mavdragon, I am praying for you and am sorry for you.
I pray that your marriage can be saved but:

Yes Pornography is bad, a form of adultery but from your posts it seems you are genuinely repentant and trying to change.
SHE had an affair with another man and openly flaunted it and refused to end it.
No matter what you did that is no justification for her affair. she should have at least waited until she was moved out or the divorce was final.
SHE should be the one leaving and finding her own place if she wants the divorce.
As a matter of fact, I personally say: Let 'er Go! If you let her kick you out you will wind up paying the mortgage for her and her new honey, as another poster alluded to.
I’m sorry this has happened to you and I know you have kids so you should stay on good terms with her for the sake of the kids and maybe you can work out joint custody.
But as others have posted, if she wants to go she’s going to go-let her go.
But you need to stay in the house. Don’t let her boot you out.
Unless it was already her house before you met/married.
As others have said stay close to Christ and the Church and pray.

I am so sorry, Mavdragon.

Now, I know you want to save the marriage. But you must remember you are also a parent and that a legal divorce might be your only option if you want to protect your ability to effectively parent and financially support your children. If your wife someday comes back to you there is always the option of remarrying civilly.

I just helped a friend divorce. Long story, but she isn’t catholic and civilly"married" as a teenager last year to a boy she only knew online and saw in real life for two whole weeks…

Anyways, since there was no property or children, I got her the required paperwork online, filled them out for her, helped her through the multi-step filing process, and went to court with her.

Court was supposed to begin at 9 am. The judge showed up 20 minutes late. By 10:15 am, we were across the street from the courthouse and starting my car with final divorce papers in hand. Counting time to gather the papers from the clerk, leave the building, get to the parking garage and get into the car, we were in the courtroom for 40 minutes.

In that 40 minutes, we watched the judge handle
  • 4 divorces (my friends included)
  • 1 “this child is not issue of this marriage” case (the spouses had been separated 11 years and the wife was pregnant with another mans child. She needed the paperwork to be able to open a paternity case since, by state law, when a married woman gives birth her legal husband is automatically placed on record as father)
  • 1 custody case
  • 2 name changes.
Forty minutes. I was stunned. And here is the interesting part. State law requires 3 counseling sessions if there are minor children involved. State law also requires a minimum 6 month separation before a divorce can be granted. But judges have the option of waiving those requirements. They frequently do.

I divorced with minor children. When the judge asked me about counseling, I told him there was no chance the marriage could be saved. He waived the counseling requirement.

I watched my friends judge waive the counseling and 6 month separation requirement for each of the 4 divorced he finalized.

I personally know 4 people in addition to myself who had divorces granted within 4 months of filing.

The moral of the story is that divorces are a big yawn to the legal system, can be dragged on for years at great expense or could be final within weeks, and staying legally married to someone who is unfaithful and/or makes other poor choices a bad idea.

What if your STBX loses her mind, goes on a bender, gets into an accident, gets sued, and marital assets are gone in a flash? Married or separated (depending on state law), YOU can lose big time if SHE does something stupid.

What if you do this separation agreement and in a few months or a year she turns up pregnant? Depending on state law, you might be automatically listed as father and financially responsible.

Try your best to save the spiritual marriage. But don’t neglect the business side of dissolving the civil marriage. It will happen with or without you. Better to be in control of making decisions that can have decades long consequences for you personally and financially.

I quite agree with what MJJean just wrote, especially about you needing to “take care of business” and how divorce can happen with or without you. I would add that waiting, hoping, praying, etc., are not substitutes for protecting your rights – you can find yourself seriously “raked over the coals” in divorce court unless you take specific steps to protect your rights - starting with getting good legal representation ASAP if you’ve not already done so.

Further, although you are free to try & save your marriage, it appears that the marriage is crumbling (no fault divorce has done that) regardless of efforts to save it, and you should not be in the circumstances where, six months from now, your ex is just that – your EX-wife – and is also armed with a court order to kick you out of the house, because you didn’t contest her seeking that relief from the courts (because you were still trying to save the marriage). Point is: Keep some clear eyed sobriety about the need to protect your rights, and do so.

Friends,

I would like to post an update to my situation. God paid for my lawyer though a friend who would like to remain anonymous. Praise be to God, I trusted he would take care of me and he did way more than I expected. My son passed his drivers test, I spent the day with him like I had planned and prayed for him thru the entire test. He aced the parking part and passed the driving part his first time by 23/25 points. The next day we were invited to our friends house for dinner and a pool party and My oldest son who normally is not interested in coming with us said he would like to go with us. I think I bonded a little with my Oldest Son by being there for him for the drivers test.

I hired a lawyer and we submitted a response to the initial divorce papers. My wife had not recieved the response yet but she wanted to talk about splitting up our resources so she hand wrote some things she wanted on a sheet of paper and gave it to me. I then took what she handed me and composed a much more detailed and thought out version and returned it to her. The ball is currently in her court. I’m just waiting for the next thing.

Thank you all for your prayers and for posting here, and for those of you who have been supportive and understanding. The body of Christ is alive here on this forum.

I continue to give out hugs nightly to my kids and tell them I love them almost every day. My goal is to tell them every day. I pray with my youngest son often while i’m tucking him in for bed. I plan to try to get my two kids who are more open to praying with me to set a time and pray together from time to time. I ask God for the words and the plan to do this.

I have said a few rosaries for my wife and offer up my daily mass for her and for our family. I saw the movie “war room” recently and was inspired to write my prayers for my family down and tape them up on the wall in my bedroom. Great family movie if you are looking for something good to watch.

Please keep us in your prayers, and please let me know if there is anything I can pray for you.

May the peace of Jesus Christ be with you all as you read this today.

Thank you for sharing. We’re all very interested in your progress. Congratulations on your loving efforts to bond with the kids. That’s commendable.
Don’t lose your courage, your hope, your faith!

I had been checking back and was wondering what was up.

Nice job with your son. Did you let him know after he chose to join you how it made you feel? Dig deep not just thanks… but deeper… guys are not good at it but can be… thanks for coming with me on Sunday. I really enjoyed our time and Saturday and I was hoping you would come. It made me feel loved when you came. I just wanted you to know that son, and hug him…

About the communication to your wife… if you want any chance of reconciling you must, must, must, “divorce yourself from the divorce…” you are paying your lawyer to do the divorce. You feel like you were helping by giving her the list. How did she feel getting the response? Yours was much more detailed… her’s lacking, hmmm… You have the perfect excuse to not interact… your lawyer. If he hasn’t said it yet call him and ask him to say… I am your lawyer, everything comes through me… " No good can come of trying to negotiate with your wife on finances… let her blame your lawyer not you… She didn’t get your revisions and say what a sweet husband… She would have maybe said that if you had accepted what she has worked on, what she thought was complete and what she thought was fair… and since it is your work all the blame she finds is heaped on you.

Ask yourself how negotiations have gone about the marriage with her? successful? Sorry to be harsh but every time she sees that offer she blames you … not good. If the lawyers do it (no cost savings since they are going to have to formalize your offer anyway and review it… ) you can simply reply… hey, I am no expert in divorce, what is your lawyer telling you? (If he/she is any good it may be the lawyers idea to get her to give you the offer hoping that you, wanting to save the marriage, don’t consult an expert and the offer is too generous. Now if it is you have to walk it back and really mess up your relationship with your wife. Finances are forever… I repeat this from earier… do not agree in writing to anything not required by your state… if the age that the settlement applies is 18 do not agree to anything in the settlement past 18. Also know that the alimony you agree to can change in amount but not duration in most states… do not settle for a 20 year pay out of a low figure… 6 months from now you could be in court and the amount goes up… for 20 years. I you agree to 5 years the amount per month can go up but it can’t be changed to 20 years…

Keep praying. Know that if you choose to deal directly with your wife it will be less successful than the negotiation for reconciling has gone… check al turtle stuff on what she feels… your opinion doesn’t matter… it makes sense to her… Keep your eye on the goal… it is reconciliation, not her being pleased with you now. The harder the settlement process the more she thinks about how tough it will be on her own. Do you have a separation agreement? If not let the lawyer handle it…all of it. Pray… good news is the Pope just cut the cost of a decree of nullity and seems to signal they should be easier to get (not happy about that but since the Church does nothing to save marriages may be for the best - plenty of divorced catholic groups and classes… how many you should not divorce classes or statements??? truth sorry… even the Pope ignored that in his statements… no call to stay married while outlining the requirements for a separation with bond remaining… Canon Law should mean something.)

Want only the best for you. You have said you want to reconcile. ask yourself, will dealing with you wife make that more or less likely? If you let the lawyer handle it you can be sweet, make stuff for her, clean, and be a changed man. Negotiate with her and when she does not get exactly what she wants she blames you and sees the you she despises… You get to pick which one she sees. Chose wisely.

My lawyer called me in for a meeting to show me the latest submittal by my wife’s lawyer. It was a planning sheet for the judge which indicated what items were still unknown and which were already settled. On that document my wife also waived alimony forever. My lawyer is going to take care of the response.

My wife left the house early in the morning on a Saturday. I woke up and noticed she was not sleeping on the couch and her van was gone. I called her on the phone and asked where she was. She told me she was getting groceries. I took this opportunity to use a I statement. I told here I get anxious and suspicious when she disappears from the house like this, and would she please wake me next time and tell me where she is going. To this she later replied something like this…what will it matter, in six months we won’t be living in the same house any more. At this point I got a little angry and I’m not sure what I said, but it didn’t help things.

Another time, my wife asked me for half of 68 dollars for our daughters indoor soccer. I told her I would have to think about it and that I was having to pay 360 dollars to get my car repaired. She then reminded me that she had to pay for our son’s car repair which amounted to 380 dollars and that she had ask me for half the money and I had refused to help her with that. I reminded her that I was going to take care of my son’s car repair myself when she took it upon herself to take the car to her mechanic. Therefore she was responsible for the money she spent. I did however tell her that I had been considering giving her the 190 dollars she asked for. Then she told me that the money for the soccer was due the very next day. I told her I didn’t have the cash on me but I would have to goto the atm. I went to the atm and withdrew the 68 dollars and gave it directly to my daughter without saying anything more to my wife. I know alot of drama, and I’m probably not describing it exactly as it happened. But it does kind of show how things have been going.

My Wife’s father has come down with a severe headache. He had to go to the hospital last night. My wife went over to her mother’s house to comfort her. Please pray for God’s will to be done in this situation. My wife actually choose to communicate with me during this crisis which was a refreshing change. She informed me before she went to her mother’s and called me on the phone later to tell me she didn’t know when she would return to our house, maybe even stay the night at her mothers. She told me a co-worker at school was going to make our youngest boy a lunch. We also talked about my getting our youngest boy to bed.

I went to a local into the wild men’s retreat oct 8-oct12. The brotherhood and community there was very helpful. Very Eucharistic and experiential retreat. I made a few new friends, and strengthened existing relationships.

I’m just taking this one day at a time, and doing my best to trust God and love unconditionally. As you can see from the rest of this post, I’m doing this very imperfectly. Frequent confession and sacraments. Please pray for God’s will in our family.

great that you checked in. Been wondering how things were going. Hardest part about the soon to be ex living in the house is you get no room for error… remember alturtle.com what to do when she leaves" She has left but you can still see her. I was in the same house for almost 2 years… It means two things. she gets to witness your changes more than if she were out of the house… and 2 every screw up is proof you have not and can not change… every time she sees a flash of why she is leaving it confirms her choice. Remember the goal… it is not to win today… long term.

Going to be firm and quick… sorry crushed for time. more later. DO NOT EVER involve you kids in any transaction between you and your soon to be ex… Nothing good can come of it. Your daughter took the money to Mom… imagine what Mom said? Not positive to absolutely horrible. Kids don’t need that. I struggle with that even now but their marriage didn’t fail… ours did. Blame who we want but it is not their business… They will assume blame and it will hurt them, read the studies… unless it is crystal clear they were not a part of it. She is their Mom… they love her… you love her, she doesn’t love you… Kids see that… they see you they know what is up… They know it isn’t right for mom to be doing what she is doing… no reason to give them reasons to see you through her eyes… and getting them involved will give her the chance… I feel for you… my ex just set up Christmas with my kids (older, college plus… unmarried, 2 out of town for jobs) and the week they are home… put her event in the middle of the week so I can’t take them to see my mom or their aunts and uncles… the event planned is to see her side of the family. Passive aggressive… yep… we were both pros… but here is the thing… If I make a stink instead of the kids seeing mom as unfair and messing up my Christmas plans, they see dad messing up their Christmas plans… with their mom and their cousins - since they knew of those plans first. maybe later they will think back on it but if I pitched a fit and moved their event or cancelled it (she would cancel, passive aggressive) then the entire time they were with me they would be thinking of how I messed things up. Unfair? yes, but true… or they would have told Mom they wanted to check with me when she mentioned it. No telling what she told them… We have not spoken since June. So I get it. I live this stuff too… just a few years further down the road.

Your exwife wants to leave… if you cling she benefits by having you and him. If you fight over split stuff _ remember, that is what you pay lawyers for… keeps you out of it and from making mistakes…she isn’t closer to coming back… you prove her right for leaving. Divorce is the business side. If you pay someone to paint your house you do not even think about painting some of it when they are not around. Legal needs to be the same way. You pay a pro so use him/her. Lets you be light friendly dad and the lawyer becomes the heavy. Any other way and you can only lose… unless you give her everything she wants… in which case she won’t respect you and won’t want to be around you… remember this line… My lawyer asked that I run everything by him concerning the divorce…they are the pros… I will call them and get back to you when I hear from them… ALWAYS.

Good you went on the retreat. focus on getting closer to Jesus and talking with him about frustrations and dreams… remember it is His will you want done… not yours… even though you and I pray He agrees with us.

What is your goal? anything else is meaningless… no pride, ego, sharing with kids… gets you toward your goal. God can help but you have to do… She is watching. No more checking up… she can go and come as she pleases… If she stays at his place you should expect it. She is not going to tell you where she went if it is somewhere you do not want her to go anyway. You know what she is up to… divorcing you. The harder you make it the easier it is for her to go… Hard fact for both of us… It was easier for them to leave and split up the family than they thought it was (your opinion doesn’t matter., to her) to stay married to us… it is a truth… hard to hear… but true. We are working to change that… takes time… that stinks too.

I have turned over the fight to Jesus, he is now fighting for my marriage and I am allowing him to get closer to me while telling Satan to get out. I have accepted what is happening and I turn to the only one who can do something about it. I am changing the only one I can change…myself.

I have been spending a lot more time in adoration lately, sitting listening, praying. No Epiphanies during adoration, but definitely peace. I feel his presence during adoration, and I let his peace wash over me. Tears flow, frustration, sadness, he takes it all and gives me peace. Daily mass has been so helpful also. I confessed to a new confessor recently and got some great council. The Sacraments are so amazing. Praise be to God thru his son and our lord Jesus Christ in the unity of the holy spirit forever and ever, Amen.

Thanks for the update. Adoration is an amazing place. We have 24/7 adoration. I need to go more. I also “lost it” in our Adoration chapel, of course mine was after Mass on Holy Thursday, and the place was jammed. It was cleansing. Good Friday when venerating the Cross, (a huge 12ftx5ft cross - we do everything big!) I hugged it and turned the pain over to Jesus… left it at the foot of the cross. For one year if I ever started to feel down or sorry for myself, God had someone show up, or call within 30 minutes and that person or the discussion was a reminder of how lucky I was. Over two years later and it was down the first weekend all my kids were out of town at college and I was alone in the pew before Mass. Started to get down. a college aged friend of my son, who had past me countless times that summer, saying “Hi” instead asked “anyone sitting here?” and sat down. No idea why he was there. I am sure God gave him the urge to sit with me instead of his other friends. I had taught him a few years earlier and he was friends with my son so we knew each other pretty well. God will provide… fight the temptation to TAKE IT BACK… He will let you - free will.

Live the life you believe you are suppose to. Keep in mind church teaching about marriage. Stay true to that in all ways until you get an annulment, if that is in the future (don’t spend anytime thinking on it now). Never forget Divorce is a business for lawyers. Nothing good can come of you dealing directly with your wife. If you don’t give her exactly what she wants you are “mean”. If you do give her exactly what she wants she will think of you as weak… not loving. You can’t win. Be strong, fair and loving in all negotiations (what you and your lawyer send to her lawyer) so you can always hold your head up for your kids. Check your state laws concerning alimony. In my state these two things were true and can be costly if neglected… duration of alimony can’t be revised after divorce is final. Amount paid can be changed the day after the final hearing if facts support it (up or down)… beware of a low monthly for a long duration (alimony, not child support - that is normally a formula anyway). ex. wife says she needs $500 for 15 years and you figure she cold get 1,000 or more a month. lawyer says she should get 8 years at some higher rate like 1,000. You feel you are getting a good deal at 500 so you jump on it. 6 months later she goes to court with proof that it should be 1,000. Judge gives her $1,000 but it is for the agreed upon 15 years. You can’t get them to change the 15 years in my state. Other gottcha in my state is any agreement to pay anything on the kids after they turn 18. I figured I would agree to pay part of college. Lawyer said if I agree to anything after 18 it can’t be changed or relief given. It is a contract that survives even bankruptcy. If dead broke you still owe the full amount and can be held in contempt if it is not paid. Not sure where you are and the laws there - just check.

Love on your older son. Share some of your feelings, not details, just feeling a little down, or not the same as it was huh? at times. Let him see you feel… Never talk badly about their Mom. No matter how true what you say is they will not want to hear it (and shouldn’t siince they didn’t cause the divorce… both of you did (affairs don’t happen to perfect marriages… something was lacking… not your fault that she chose that but something helped make the risk OK. My men’s group is quick to remind those who blame that… “it was easier for her to leave you and break the family than to stay. Hard truth… but to her (the only person who matters - her decision) it was true or she would stay. Stinks but helps stop blaming… which does no one any good. Keep praying… even for your wife. that she find peace and that God’'s will be done, not your (tough too, I always add… but God I hope we agree on this one…”) Tell God exactly what you want to happen. then defer to His will.

Nothing is happening to reconcile my marriage after years of prayer. I have come to realize that if a divorce was the 2x4 I needed to get closer to God and nearer to a chance at Heaven, then it is the gift of a loving God. Not fun and I also pray that we get credit for time suffering here on earth for time needed in purgatory. Life is short. Eternity… not so much. I also believe somethings happen not because of things you did but because God wants others, who you may never know are watching, to see how you handle the situation faith wise. When faced with tough life situations people either run toward God or away from him. You are choosing to run toward Him… people notice that Faith… your kids, co-workers, friends… God may want them to see so they change. Your situation may save 5 other marriages and families from this pain. You will never know.

Peace of Christ be with you. The Grace of the Sacrament now dwells in you in a special way. Temptations will be reduced (never figured on that…) and if you allow it you will feel those graces. God is always good, even when we don’t understand. Trust Him. Love your kids… tell them… be specific why you love them, what you love about them specifically… not just I love you. Pick some trait you wish you had or had more of that they have, call it out and let them know how you feel when they love you or do something special for you. example, you asked if I needed anything, that made me feel loved. You stopped and thought about me before you left. I felt special. Thanks for doing that. Go deeper… always look them in the eyes no matter the discussion if they are in a position where you can. Same with your Wife. look in her eyes… gives feeling of connection and honesty too. You are in my prayers. No idea how this story continues but I know it will end as it should according to God’s plan.

This is wonderful, and a testament of your own faith! Even in other circumstances, this can be applied. 👍

Thank you Hydin, your posts are always so well thought out and from the heart. I just wanted to mention that a male friend that I play Volleyball with once a week was once a protestant Christian, but fell away from practicing his faith. I have been sharing with him the things that are going on with my faith and with my marriage. He is now feeling a pull from God to come home to God’s church and is willing and open to discussing faith matters with me. He tells me I’m one of two people that he is comfortable talking about such matters. He trusts me and said that he can see Christ in me. Watching me go thru what I have been going thru has had a profound impact on his life and how he thinks about his wife and his family and his relationship to God. I am so humbled by this and so grateful to God for using my suffering to help someone. Also along the same topic, my cousin who also Is having trouble with his marriage and is not a believer is now much more open to hearing about God.

I signed my wife’s divorce settlement about three weeks ago and haven’t heard of when the divorce will be final yet. I wrote on the bottom of the divorce agreement “I DO NOT WANT THIS DIVORCE!”. I did get a call from my lawyer telling me that the mediation meeting and the court date have been taken down by the other side. My Lawyer believes the other side has settled.

I should have until July 21st to move out of my home. We agreed to equal custody. So I will soon probably be looking for a place to rent that will house me and my 3 kids. I have to pay 350 a month child support to her, but she took on our second mortgage which I was paying 321 a month on. She gets the house and all the equity, I get to keep my 401k and there will be no alimony ever. We didn’t get friend of the court involved so we can pretty much split up the time any way we want. There is a fall back of 1 week at my house and 1 week at her house if we can’t agreed on how there time is to be divided.

I’m doing much better at handling triggers and staying in a state of grace. People I talk to say they can see a significant change in me. I hope anyone reading this can draw some strength from my story and come closer to Jesus. God bless you all. Please pray for my family and other struggling families… there are so many.
