That’s an admirable stance to take, I would think. I was reading Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Deus Caritas Est which does talk about the responsibility of the state to determine what makes a just society and to provide that to its citizens as well as the Church’s duty (more like joy) to influence the heart and the mind of the State towards a loving as well as a just response. Colbert seems to be following the Pope’s leadership in this regard (regardless of whether or not you agree with Colbert’s solutions ((whatever they may be))).
 
Stephen Colbert provided his own liturgical dance version of the hymn “King of Glory” on the show Strangers with Candy. I’ve heard different reactions to this clip, some find it offensive, some (especially a choir director I know) didn’t find it offensive and found Colbert’s dance pretty funny. I’m not sure what I think. I remember this was not one of my favorite songs as a kid.

Colbert’s a satirist who is very lighthearted in television, so he wouldn’t do a spirited defence of the Church on his show. But I’ve seen him defend the Church humoursly a few times. He also wouldn’t do evangelism on his show because that’s not how it is structured

He had some, um, interesting things to say abou gays and the priesthood here:

Pope Benedict decrees that men who have not had homosexual encounters for three years have only “transitory” homosexual tendencies and still qualify to be priests.

That being said, this made me laugh quite hard.

I never did like that song, Colbert hit the nail on the head as to why…😉
I thought he was funnier back then than I do now. Perhaps with the upcoming election he will be back to his usual self.

I thought he pranced around quite campily.
 
I think he is, like us all, a sojourner upon this earth, a sinner. But I feel like he is at least not afraid to share what he knows about the faith and bring it to the world. I don’t know how he feels about all the issues and maybe he is wrong on some non-negotiables like abortion and homosexuality, and might do damage to the Faith, but I can’t help but think that his ‘coolness’ factor and relevance to the current culture is helpful in bringing in some previously non-interested folks to at least consider Catholicism. It’s ultimately up to the individual to learn about the Church and the Teachings.

There are many Catholics that dissent from this and other Church teachings, on both sides of the aisle. I do not know why some people have to be so public in their dissent though.

I thought he retired.

One of my sons liked the show. I had no appreciation for some of his positions.

I know that Mr. Colbert is a practicing and devout Catholic, and he is very popular, but I have to wonder how he got away with two things:
  1. Why didn’t he get reprimanded for getting certification to be a minister to perform wedding ceremonies when he performed a wedding ceremony for a couple who got married during the government shutdown? I’m surprised that a devout and practicing Catholic like Stephen Colbert would do such a thing, and I’m even further surprised that none of the U.S. bishops have commented on it, at least to my knowledge.
  2. After the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in the U.S., Stephen Colbert went on the air and mocked every one of the Supreme Court Justices who voted against gay marriage. I DARE him to mock the Catholic bishops who feel pretty much the same way that the dissenting Supreme Court Justices feel about it.
I’m sorry for those Catholics who admire Stephen Colbert, but this comes off as highly hypocritical of him, if you ask me.

Any thoughts?
 
How would we know if he was reprimanded? How do you know he didn’t got to confession? Mr. Colbert has a pretty good rep in general. As Catholics if we don’t like what’s on tv we should watch EWTN. Leave the judgement to the Lord.
 
First off we must look at Colbert’s actions not so much as a reflection on him but on the “character” he portrayed on his show. It was all political media satire. Even his constant mentioning of his “devoutness” was satirical. He is a comedian.

I know he often says he is Catholic I am not too sure if he would consider himself “devout”.

I was a fan of his show but you have to remember he is an entertainer in secular television, not a Christian media.

We know because he hasn’t publically retracted any of his errorneous statements.
