SH was a big hero of the atheists; i can’t pray for everybody

no hard feelings; SH (atheist) won’t be one of the ones i pray for…
I pray for everybody, and I am agnostic. Something I remember from being Catholic is that you, too, can pray for everybody. FYI.

You know, Our Lord told Saint Faustina to please pray especially for hardened sinners. He explained to her that the loss of each soul hurts Him deeply for all eternity. Our Lord died for this man, if anything just in an attempt to help prevent Our Lord’s precious blood from being shed in vain, we aught to pray especially for those who , like Hawking, May be in danger of losing their soul forever. These are the people who need our prayers the most. We need eachbother’s prayers the most! The Lord wished for this man to be a great Saint, just like everyone else, let’s console His heart by praying for him so that, if he didn’t recognize Our Lord in earth, he will glorify His mercy for all eternity. Please pray for me too!
Really nice post @April29, it is my favorite on this thread.

“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”
I cannot understand why some of my friends think this is the greatest quote in the world. First of all, we maybe “understand” a tiny fraction of “the Universe” at best, and second, if “understanding” stuff was all there was to life, I would probably have killed myself years ago. Logical understanding gets real old real fast.

Well, we do have a connection to the animal world, that is true enough. Hawking and Einstein knew a lot of stuff. And they had intimations and hunches of big things, the things we call the transcendentals.

God has given us dumb Catholics a pearl of great price that the greatest of scientific minds did not always discern.

I agree with what you said, Bear, I was just thinking.

May he rest in peace. He was a truly great scientist to my mind, not that I can claim to understand him. I think he said somewhere that linear time is an illusion - I agree with that part. I believe there is very likely a lot more to the universe(s) than we suspect. He did suffer greatly and was very courageous in the face of his illness and debilitation - many would have just given up the fight. I am sorry he never figured out God.

I realize some people get a lot out of logical understanding.
For me, it’s like a game that one plays. You can level up in the game and score lots of points. But unless you realize there is also a spiritual component and spiritual levels, it just seems incomplete and pointless to me.

Logic, for example, does not really explain lasting love, or all the types of connections between people.

The caveat is that I have always been attracted towards spiritual stuff. If I had fallen away from the Church, this might have found an outlet in something less desirable like Wicca. I can understand that some people do not have that bent and are more strongly logically oriented.

I have read a couple of his books on science and to be honest I wasn’t really impressed.

Of course he was lauded publicly and I think such a thing is important from the perspective of the symbolic showing of respect to the unquestioned talents of disabled people which appear absent from much of the media.

Like all of us when it is time, may God have mercy on his soul.

Whatever Stephen Hawking did, he still deserves our prayers as a member of the human race.

Requiescat in Pace.

I truly hope you remember these exact words when you see God…

SH was undeniably brilliant, although it does not seem that it translated into being a very good man from the accounts of his family and people around him. Still, it must have been physically and psychologically torturous to be stuck in a failing body for so many years. May God have mercy on him.

He hung out in Vatican City with the Pope. Though I’m not generally an optimist by nature, I think that’s a good sign.

“Time didn’t exist before the big bang, so there is no time for god to make the universe in.”
For an intelligent man, this is purely stupid. God created time and is outside of it.
I pray that in his last moments he realized his mistake and repented,

Indeed. Scientific understanding of the universe is a tiny fraction of all there is. I hope that Stephen Hawking will someday be able look upon the universe and say “Now I understand. Give thanks and praise to God!”

He passed on Pi day…also Albert Einstein’s Birthday…interesting.

Right, he could have studied Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity some more…the speed of light is a constant, that is time dependent and is not affected by the Mass of an object. Bless his soul and all those he attempted to dissuade from their faith in God. God guide us rightly in Jesus name.

I understand the feeling, Brian. But remember, Jesus said to pray for everyone. I’m not a fan of SH either but am trying to pray for him because of my love for Jesus.

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Not that Stephen Hawking was this bad (by a long shot) but if we are supposed to do this for the really bad folks we can at least do this for Stephen Hawking.

Lord have mercy on his soul. He added amazing things to the world of science. Too bad he didn’t use his mind to add things to the world of faith as well.
