I’ve seen Masses at the beach, in prisons, in parks–what’s so evil about having Mass at a rented building? I really hope this was a misquote.

I’ve been following this story with some interest as I have a personal quasi-connection to this as good friends of my fiancee’s family attended this parish.

After the Bishop announced the closure of the parish they took it upon themselves to re-incorporate themselves under their old parish name and set up shop in an old storefront. Ostensibly this was done so they could continue to operate things like their soup kitchen, St. Vincent de Paul Society and other charitable things their parish did. The Bishop said this was fine since the Church is never opposed to good works, but he drew the line at conducting masses not in conjunction with the parish they were merged with.

The Bishop sent the letter as a warning that they shouldn’t conduct masses in direct contravention of the Bishop’s orders. So it wasn’t that masses would be conducted at an old building or outside of a church but that it would be done so against the Bishop’s orders.

Exactly. If the bishop chooses to merge parishes and shut a few down, that is his prerogative under Canon Law (Canon 515.2). As lay Catholic, their diocesan bishop is their superior in all matters of public liturgical matters, and what he says goes. They don’t have to like it, but they do have to accept it.

Do these people not understand the idea of the Catholic Church? The other parish is just as good as the old one; same Eucharist, same readings, same prayers. Placing “the community” at the top above all else is a very Protestant idea.

I was thinking about posting something about the Methodist preacher and what he said. It seems he doesn’t understand Catholic theology on this sort of thing, or if he does understand it he’s choosing to misrepresent it to stir up trouble.

Perhaps he also doesn’t realize that in the United Methodist Church their Conference can order churches closed and congregations merged. It doesn’t happen to the extent that it has with the Catholic Church since the UMC isn’t as large, plus the congregations can typically do more in the way of negotiations before a merger. Also, I think a UMC church has to be financially struggling and really in dire straits before a merger is suggested.

and just why is protestant involved in Catholic Church decisions?
what do they know about our Fatih? what they believe is not what we believe. they should not be involved in our afairs. good for bishop Lennon. it seems to me he wants the CC to become Catholic again. good for him.

and i am not surprised that protestant get involved on this issue. these people are acting in disobedience.
