I checked the marriage FAQ and it looks like if my wife and I are both non-Catholics, we have a valid natural marriage that will become a sacramental marriage when I complete RCIA (which won’t begin until the fall). That’s what I seemed to find out.

However, I spoke with a local priest (who says he has a PhD in Theology) and he told me that even if I complete RCIA, my marriage to a non-Catholic would not be recognized by the Catholic Church, which doesn’t sound good. Is this priest wrong (hopefully)?

Dear friend,

IF you are BOTH going to be baptized when you finish RCIA, then the marriage will become sacramental. It’s Baptism that makes the difference. If only you will be baptized, then it will not be sacramental. But as far as the Catholic Church is concerned, all things being equal, as non-Catholics, you are validly married now and will continue to be validly married even if you are the only one that will be baptized.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
