Still no Pope

We’ll get there, just need to keep praying that they elect the right man for these times.

…if nothing else, this is more interesting and meaningful than presidential elections! (and a whole lot shorter, too)

And what we can take heart in, there is probably not just one right man. There are probably several who could be Pope.
 
This was purely an informational thread. I didn’t expect a Pope this morning.

Me neither, but I did get up early and turn on the live feed - just in case 🙂

I’m confident it will be decided at the right time - whenever that may be.
 
If we don’t see white smoke today, I think we can start to doubt the chances for the frontrunners (mainly Scola or any curial-backed candidates). Anyone else agree?

I think so, though to be honest I don’t really expect a protracted vote anyway (then again, maybe they just say the heck with it and get the voting done today no matter what).

I could be way wrong and he most definitely could be elected, but I never thought a guy like Scola was really a frontrunner. I think it’s always somebody like an O’Malley or perhaps a Sandri as a fall back/compromise guy. I just don’t see them electing a native born Italian, even a reform minded one. From an optics standpoint it would look like they are going backward.

I agree with you. I’ve been a little surprised about the recent talk about Scola…almost as if they just have to fill their Italian Quota for the frontrunners. I also think Turkson has been seriously overrated in the media.

Turkson’s been falling back for a while, ever since he looked like he was campaigning.

Ouellette seems TOO much the other way, like he’d be a Saint Celestine or the previous Holy Father. He so doesn’t want the job that I think he’d scare the cardinals off from voting for him fearing that he would either end up quitting early or not even accepting.

I think you’re right about Ouelette…and I think that actually boosts the prospects for an American. The man seems terrified by the prospect, more so than just standard humility would expect.

I agree… it’s a gut feel more than anything else that O’Malley will get picked. He’s popular there, and has the street cred of cleaning up filth.

The Italians, perhaps more than anybody, love the Franciscans, and I have heard what you have, that Cardinal O’Malley is extremely popular there.

His name, along with Cardinal Dolans, is being bandied about quite a lot in the press, which I know might not mean much, but to even have an American, and two at that, being mentioned seriously for the Papacy is indeed big news…🙂

Me too! I would love for him to be picked.

I read a Jimmy Akin where he expected the new pope to be elected somewhere between 5-8 ballots. So it will be either this afternoon (last ballot of the day) or early tomorrow morning or around noonish.

Maybe today!
 
I’d much rather see Burke than O’Malley. Any of the Americans could probably be a strong force, but of the three contenders, O’Malley seems like he might have the hardest time of it.
 
Any Pope from the United States would be bad for the Church in the U.S. Non-Catholics find the pressuring of office holders by bishops who withhold Sacraments very disgusting. The cartoons which appeared during the candidacies of Al Smith and John Kennedy showing a wicked looking Pope holding the strings of a marionnette in the image of the Catholic politician will return. Young people hold a dim view of the Church’s involvement in issues such as birth control and same gender marriage.

Sadly, the Catholic Church, and many Protestant denominations, spend too much effort pushing their beliefs on others rather than simply leading an exemplary life.

Which is exactly why we need someone willing to name and shame them into seeing the error of their ways.
