Anyway, it is good that the Pauls publicly have a sense of humor about this because it makes them winners in this situation since the statue was returned. Getting upset and angry would make those who vandalized the statue victors. However, it is still sad that their property of nearly 40 years has been defaced. I think that they should move the statue to a less conspicuous place in their yard and have it repainted as it was before and the vandals will hopefully be none the wiser.

The fact that Mr. and Mrs Paul can laugh at his new appearance is offesive to Franciscans. How would you feel if defaced your father?

It’s funny, because I recall walking in NYC and seeing a person the corner selling a statue of the Sacred Heart. I didn’t give it much thought at the time. Now that you ask, I wonder if they just sell them.

I don’t find it funny either. It should not have happened. This was private property, owned for many years and it was stolen and defaced. But, all things considered, I guess the Pauls didn’t really have much of a choice in reaction. If they’d gotten angry and showed the vandal(s) that they’d gotten to them, then the vandal(s) win. Since the Pauls chose to make light of the situation and find humor in it, it is my guess that that took some wind out of the sails of the vandal(s). I hope so, anyway. After all, where’s the fun in that if the Pauls laugh right along with the vandals instead of getting upset?

Making peace may have been the thought process and is possible, I suppose. That would be nice for the Pauls. Unfortunately, the vandals will likely just move on to other targets that may garner the reaction they seek rather than stop vandalizing others’ property.

Let’s hope so. The statue of St. Francis should be returned to its former state, or at least as close to that state as it is possible to attain.
