Hi…

Since this is a thread about the things that Jesus said that you don’t understand, please enlighten me whoever understands what Jesus meant when He said sort of ( I cannot quote the exact verse, I have to go find it, takes time…;)) that some of His disciple wouldn’t die until they see He returns as the King. I sometimes tempted to believe that bible somehow indicates a certain implication of “re-incarnation”. This verse I think indicates that as well as the verse that said John the Baptist was Elijah who came back.

Anyone can help…?
Thanks.
i tend to think what he was talking about was his kingdom on Earth, which is the Church…

the Church was established when Jesus ascended & then sent the Holy Spirit on the Apostles…

One does not go to Purgatory for failing to adhere to the optional evangelical counsels, one goes to Purgatory because of sin which has not been paid for temporally. My understanding is that failing to adhere to the evangelical counsels is not a sin, either mortal or venial.
i am not familiar with evangelical counsels??? Are you talking about the Councils of the Church thorughout history??

In any case, people go to Purgatory (and most go there before Heaven) because of sin, both confessed mortal & venial sins that have not been atoned for…

it is a sin to NOT do things as well as to DO them… It is a sin to neglect charitable works… to hoarde $, for example, when people in the world are dying of hunger…

so in that sense, pepole end up in Purgatory for not “giving up their possessions”… possessions ($) that they don’t themselves need…

(I’m not always so good at this myself… 😦 :banghead: so I’m not trying to sound self-righteous…)…

.

*** If one is not able to put the spiritual bond Christ has formed with us over earthly formed bonds then Jesus teaches we are not worthy of Him.***

not easy but not impossible…
An odd saying, although I know it’s meaning is this, and I paraphrase;

of all men born of women there is no greater than John the Baptist.

Another misquote.

Here’s what was said:

Acts 7:56.

“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
and we Catholics get to “see” Him… in the Blessed Sacrament… and take Him into our very bodies…

and be in His awesome Presence while here on Earth… 🙂

:heaven:

Mat 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent take it by force.

d:
i believe this means that we have to do “violent” things (to our baser nature, etc) in order to … .as it were force our way into Heaven…

Jesus said it was NOT easy getting to Heaven, finding tht narrow road that leads to Heaven…

and so, it seems that since it is hard to get into Heaven, we must do things that are “forceful”… to get There…

1 John 5 (RSV-CE)
16 If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin,
he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal.
There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that.
17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
18 We know that any one born of God does not sin, but He who was
born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power
of the evil one.

but we are all sinners…:confused:

Well Jesus was greater than John the Baptist, but he was / is God… (also)…

does this answer your questions??
Jesus was greater. John taught that himself. But Jesus say’s that John is the greatest of all men born of woman. So, of all men born of woman. How does that exclude Jeusus?

Here is a Catholic Encyclopedia on the Evangelical Counsels (not to be confused with the various Ecumenical Councils, notice the difference in spelling).

Also, here is a Catholic Encyclopedia article on the use of wealth, which addresses the issue of responsibility with money.

Please do comment, especially on the second article, because I am actually a little confused about what the requirements are in terms of use of wealth.

I think so too. John the Baptist must have been the greatest ascetic before Jesus.

Jesus taught that the “Kingdom” was at hand - which means present to His hearers. We tend to think of the kingdom as something in the future. The Jews were living for the future, as their present was enslavement and subjection to the Romans. Thus, our Lord had to open their eyes that salvation was there, right before them.

As to John the baptist, he was not only referred to as “Elijah” by Christ (Mark 9:13). The Angel Gabriel in speaking with Zechariah, told him that his son (John) would have the “spirit and power of Elijah” (Luke 1:17). Thus, there are two heavenly sources telling us that John would indeed represent the return of Elijah - Gabriel telling of the future, and Christ of the present.

i don’t thikn more than about 30% are real Catholic Christians…
At the Crucifixion, one of the disciples had committed suicide, one had denied the Lord, and all the others–with one exception–fled.

One out of 12 is not even 30%.

Did the others cease to be “real Catholic Christians” by their defections?

If so, what hope is there for the rest of us poor sinners?

BTW–your notion of “real Catholic Christians” is nothing more than the Protestant heresy of the “invisible church” with different words.

Cluny:
To be reincarnated, as I understand it, you have to die first.

Elijah never died, but was translated into heaven in a fiery chariot while still living.

It was in his physical body he appeared at the Transfiguration of Jesus.

One fault with the doctrine of reincarnation is that it denies that our physical bodies are essential parts of our human nature.

Sorry. It’s only one body per person. Period.
But I remember Paul said that most sins are done due to the weakness of flesh. Seems he didn’t really appreciate flesh or body either:confused:

thanks… have skimmed through the material… but no time right now to go into details about them… I haven’t eaten much in the last 8 hours or so …

but i can say what i personally think & that is that people should live simple lives… not go chasign after this material luxury or that… It is not easy. I live a simple life … yet sometimes feel i need actually MORE ambiition… because… well, i keep thinking what if this happens and that happens and i don’t have enough $ to deal with it… Trusting God is not one of my strong points… and God wants me to change… and i am trying… but anyway… i guess the Holy spirit speaks to peple, tells them that such and such thing is not a need, etc… I just get the feeling a lot of people are NOT listening… myself included…

but i’m trying to listen and i do better than i used to… so hopefully i will do even better tomorrow…

i just think it is very wrong to have 3 cars (for example), 2 houses, etc… when there are people in the world who are dying for lack of food… Mothers working full time while their young children are left with babysitters… just so they can this or that material thing… that is veyr wrong to me…

for one thing all those defections happened BEFORE Pentecost… before the Spirit strenthened them… and evne though they fled, they did NOT totally forsake Christ as Judas did.

for another thing: What the heck are you talking about that my notion… etc… etc…

have no idea what you are talking about…
